Hi Griffin,

I am building that one too, mine is the "starter kit" that was sold with paints and cement, it will fun to compare kits, cab you find the model code on the instructions? and how many pieces in your kit?

Griffin

Ooh, Ooh - can I join?

I'm a total newb but maybe this will get me going. I bought my model last weekend in the hopes of building a relatively easy one to get some confidence as I'm trying to get back into the hobby after +/- 30 years.

Even though it's a simple model, it may take me the whole year to build it as the last model I tried building has taken 4+ years. Embarrassed

Scale 1:72 - Supermarine Spitfire Mkla. I'm 99% sure it's going to be 100% OOB.

Hey, welcome aboard Griffin! I hadn't noticed the location before - the City of Champions & home to my favourite hockey team. (Its a sickness I just can't shake!! Wink)

Thanks for the welcome guys! I'll get the model number and piece count for my kit tonight.

Yeah - that "sickness" is only getting worse. I'd consider euthanasia. Dead

Griffin,

Based on your photos, that Mk1a is the newly tooled release.  If you work straight out of the box, you can build like most of us did in our youth -- a weekend build.  And it'll look real nice if you brush paint because that'll help fill in some of the oversized panel lines.

Good luck welcome.

Tim

Hi guys.

Just as a matter of interest, I have just started to complete 2 of my New tool Airfix kits (BAE Hawk 120 1/72 and Spit Mk9).

The pannellines on the Spit is stacks better and that includes the fit on the Spit than on the Hawk. The pnly major problem with the spit is that the decals seem to be very thick and no matter how much "Markfit" I put under it (over a glossed plane) it still silvers like crazy! It also doesn't want to go into the pannellines or around cornerd. A few of them also started cracking with all the work to get them to lay flat.

Eventually I was forced to carefully brush closs under the decals to sort them out.

On the few decalsI put on the Hawk the problem was not so serious and they lay a bit better with very little silvering. It would be interesting to see if anyone else had/has the same problem or if it maybe was just a "dudd" sheet I got.

I will post a pic just to show them.

Theuns,

I used a combination of the kit decals (markings & stencils) with aftermarket (squadron codes and serial) for my Mk IX.  I had no problems, but used Microset and Microsol to get them to lay flat.  Plain water first, get them positioned, use a cotton swab to squeeze the water out.  Blue label brushed on to settle them down a bit followed by red label to finish.  30 minutes between each step to let the liquid fully dry.  24 hours later I put a clear coat on to seal them.  I also propped the model so the decals were parallel to the table, letting gravity give me some help in them settling down.

Hey Tim.

It is difficult to get Set and Sol here in SA, so I use Tamiya Markfit on my decals. It works very well on all but this last bach on Arifix stuff. Maybe I was just unlucky with that particular sheet, who knows. But atleast they are on now with minimal silvering.

I will have a look at another irfix kit for the GB and hopefully theu will be better this time.

Now, what to build next, a 1/72 Me 110 perhaps hmm.............................

Yeah, the FRS.1 is not much better priced at A$170 here. I got the Flightpath upgrade set from Hannants in the UK for A$97 including delivery. This will be a pricey bird!

Can I play too?  I've got the classic 1/72 Spit Mk.I in the bullpen for the Spitfire GB so put me down for that  and something else as well.  Maybe the Space Shuttle, yea that's it.

The Space Shuttle is pure Airfix goodness.  Now I just gotta remember where I put all my aftermarket stuff for it.  If I know me I put in the box with the kit, just don't remember it.  Now I got an excuse to order the pe set from New Ware.

Hi Scorpiomikey!

I would like to join with 1/72 A4D-1 Skyhawk (1409). As far I know my kit is early 60:s issue. Bagged, but instructions missing. I just gave "sun bath" to the decals.

I put picture of the parts here as soon as I can get my pc fixed Bang Head
