Doogs, I can surely get a Thunderbolt built in 2012.  I did a couple razorbacks this year.  I'd like to do something with a bubble top for this GB.  I'll let you know soon.    Rick.

Electric Blues - I don't have the Academy D, but I have the Academy N, and between it and the big Hasegawa, I'd vote Hasegawa hands down. To me, the Academy is a solid enough kit, but if I'm building a -D in 48th, I'd rather stick with either the simple fun of the old Revellogram (IMO their best 1:48 fighter of that era) or just go all in with the masterful Tamiya kit. That and Jugs in 1/32 are just awesome to behold, even in the box.

Thanks Doogs!

Count me in! I'll be building the big Hasegawa 1/32 OOB. Maybe I'll add a PE harness if I can get one and possibly a set of AM decals. Have no idea as to what scheme to make though. There are so many and this is my favorite plane of all time!

Start is on Dec. 21st correct? End? OK to start research now before the 21st?

One thing you may want to consider with the Hasegawa is their brass blast tubes. Master (whose tubes I use for 1/48 kits) makes a set as well, but they're designed as direct replacements for the Trumpeter kits. The Hasegawa ones fit the Hasegawa kits.

Correct, start is on the 21st. It'll run until December 31, 2012, and yeah, it's totally cool to start research, asking questions, posting cool finds, etc. I'm considering using the second "For Future Use" post for cool research finds.

I'd like to buy an exterior and interior P.E. set for my Hasegawa 1/32 P-47D. At least the P.E. harness. Any pointers where I might find those on line so I can have them shipped out internationally?

Pretty sure Great Models, Sprue Brothers, etc will be able to ship out to Mexico. Haven't tried, though, so not 100%.

As for harnesses...yeah I guess you could go with Eduard PE...but I'm absolutely dying to try these new ones from RB Productions:

Well I got a WIP that's almost ready for paint, so I guess I'll have to use the Tamiya 1/48 kit in my stash. Not sure the exact version of the Jug, but will check when I get home.

I've had packages shipped to me (in Canada) from Sprue Brothers with no problems. We're all NAFTA cousins, shouldn't be any problem to ship south.

What was that that HisNHerTanks (was that it...haven't seen her since the weekend O&E got killed) kept going on about with Canada shipping and customs holding stuff? Sounded vaguely conspiracy-ish to me at the time...

hmm - don't remember hearing anything about that. I've had zero problems with shipping from Sprue Brothers, 6(?) packages later. Now I've only had "dry product" like kits, resin, PE or decals. Maybe he's tried shipping paints/glues that would require a hazardous tag, that would probably get more attention from Customs. My declaration tags are usually generic "plastic model kit, value X$", never had any problems with Customs. And to be honest, "problems with customs" would be duty or taxes - well, if it comes to that, that's part of what the kit or supplies cost isn't it!?!

That harness Doog posted looks terrific!

I usually order from Mega Hobby and have no problems with their shipping to Mexico or their service, which is always top notch.

I checked there first but all I found were interior and exterior kits for the 1/32 Trumpeter Jug. Since I only need the harness, I guess the interior kit would work on my Hasegawa but it's kind of expensive to just get a harness from it. I'd guess the exterior kit wouldn't work at all.

Have gotten really good service from Great Models shipping to Mexico and Lucky Models as well. Have never tried Sprue Bros.

...

cml - Love the -M...any idea what scheme you're thinking yet? Not that there are many to choose from! I actually learned the other day that Lifelike decals makes markings for Dave Schilling's (56th's CO after Zemke) last P-47, which was apparently the first M the squadron received:

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g291/Lampiesflightcase/lm-s2.jpg

I've got something of a man-crush on Schilling (along with the 52nd's CO John Meyer), so of course those markings were an immediate order for me!

Hey Doogs - great pic!

I'm an OOB kind of builder, so i plan on building the two tone blue camo which Tamiya identifies as being that of Maj George Bostwick.

Also, i really love camo schemes and especially schemes that use 'unusual' colours - eg blues, grays, aggressor schemes etc.

Can't wait to get started!

Ok I'm a total rookie to the GB thang. How does it work? I've got the Academy Gabreski 1:48 special edition que'ed up right now. I think this Group build thing might be cool! Just need some details!

Sure thing, Geof!

It may help to think of group builds like a book club - except instead of everyone reading the same book and then talking about it, everyone builds something around the group build's theme or subject. If you check out some of the others, there's a Panzer III and its variants group, a Natural Metal Finish Group, one dedicated to the Eastern Front in WWII, etc.

They usually tend to be focused around 1) a certain time/geography/campaign, 2) a certain vehicle or 3) a technique.

This one is for the greatest aircraft of all, the P-47!

Basically, just build the Jug, post pics, ask questions, get feedback, learn off what others do, share tips...it's a great way to take what's essentially a solo activity and make it somewhat communal!

I believe it's MDC that makes a full resin pit for the Hasegawa Jug, if you're so inclined.

Otherwise, Eduard makes generic harnesses in 1/32 that look pretty great. Since they were pretty standard across type you could use the USAAF ones across P-47s, P-51s, P-38s, etc...

Ok. So we don't start until the start date correct? The only minor prob with that is the gabby 47 is up! I'll have to find another project to tide me over... Maybe I'll build a car...

Doogs,

Sorry for the delay.  The RoG kit is a bubble top.  Now as for the markings, I'm thinking either Soviet or Central/South American, maybe British if I can find some appropriate decals.

Alright, alright Doogs, you just had to go and start a P-47 GB. I've been sitting here lately salivating over starting either one of my 1/48 Tamiya F4U Corsairs or the 1/48 Monogram PBY Catalina for the winter and then ya go and do this. Sigh, alas I am unable to resist. So sign me up. This last year I picked up both the Tamiya 1/48 P-47D bubbletop and the P-47M along with a few sets of AM decals and accessories. So, now I'm trying to decide what to build. Currently I'm leaning towards the P-47D flown by Capt. Kenneth Dahlberg, 353rd FS/354th FG 9AF. Always liked that yellow cowling with the black skull and crossbones paint scheme. Not to mention an interesting history of the 353rd FS and their brief 4 month stint with the Jug, Nov. '44 - Feb. '45.

This will also be my first NMF build so I'm pretty excited about getting past my reservations there.

So. I'm past cursing you Doogs and amped about getting started.

Got y'all down!

Geof - I'll probably be pretty lenient about starting a bit early. 21st is the official go-time, but if you wanted to kick off a week or so beforehand, no worries.

Joe - Glad to oblige! As much as I love the Corsair and the PBY (they probably both make my top 5 - definitely top 10), I have to agree with the P-47! Have you ever built a Tamiya Jug before? Absolute honey of a kit. If you're picking up aftermarket, put a set of Master Models brass blast tubes way up at the top of the list - IMO they're one of the single best additions that can be made to the kit.

I'm in!

I have 3 Tamiya Jug kits in my stash. I've also been eyeing the 1/32 Hasegawa kit. I'm amazed at the amount of aftermarket available for jugs, particularly decals.

wouldn't mind jumping in this one myself if you still have room for one more Doogs!  just couldn't pass on the name of the group build.  I've got the P-47D Gabreski kit as well, still unsure on the markings though.  would have to work on it once i'm done with the Stug for the PZ III GB.

Peace through superior firepower.

Doogs:

I'm in on this if you'll have me. Two mostly OOB Tamiyas in 1/48  razor back P-47D 'Miss Dallas', 336th FS, Debden, October 1942 and a Bubble top D. Haven't figured out which one yet but it will be in NMF with invasion stripes.

Thanks for joining up, gents! Y'all are up on the roster now.

panzerpilot - just let me know when you decide between Tamiya and Hasegawa...and yeah the amount of AM out there is all kinds of ridiculous isn't it? Course, with so many unique and crazy schemes to pick from, it seems like the P-47 is a natural choice for decals. What I really don't understand is how there are so many Spitfire decals that are just sheet after sheet of identical markings save for a few letters and numbers...

John - Which Tamiya? Razor, Bubble, M?

Brian - Looking forward to the Acadejug!

jbrady - Welcome aboard! Looking very forward to your Jug!

Way ahead of ya Doogs. Having seen the blast tubes on your builds I ordered up a couple of sets for each of my kits, along with gun barrels for the P-38. This will indeed be mv first Tamiya P-47. Having seen this kit built up, read the reviews and then opening the box and going "Oh Momma!" made joining this GB easy. You especially have to love the P-47M kit that includes all the vertical fin inserts, engine and cockpit parts to build everything from the P-47D-25 to the P-47M. Simply Awesome.

Doogs. I've decided on the 1/32 Hasegawa P47D. It's going to be " 'Jabo', Capt Milt Thompson, 509th Fighter Squadron, 405th Fighter Group", superscale decal set. I plan on getting the barrel set you mentioned, Eduard masks/zoom, and various other aftermarket. Alclad NM. I thought it befitting to model it "Jabo", because of the versitile nature of the P-47. I'll model the same. Bombs and rocket tubes (if available in the kit). Later, perhaps another P-47? Tamiya kit #90 "Bubbletop", with the checkerboard nose?

Incidentally, how do you post pics here? I've just finished my 1/32 FW-190D9 "yellow 10". I suppose I'll have to ask the moderator?

This is gonna be fun!!
