Well, all the big decals are done and done. Only thing is the aftermarket decal sheet didn't come with much in the way of stenciling and the original kit sheet was mysteriously vanished  So I'm waiting hoping it will show up.......

Think I'm just going to skip most of the stenciling, since I'm going to paint the NM areas more or less semi-gloss I guess I could add them later if I decide to.

Gamera - Looking very very nice there. Sure hope your other decal sheet appears.

  I am making very slow progress on the cowling on my Jug. But, I finally have it painted, decaled and gloss overcoated. Just need to apply a wash, some additional weathering, light sheen overcoat and then glue it all together and then I'll share some pics.

Vance: I'm using Alclad with Doogs technique of black undercoat, airframe aluminum over that and then painting the centers of the panels with plain aluminum, and finally a light dusting to bring everything together. The plain aluminum is a little lighter and the airframe aluminum shows partially though with the black undercoat giving a pre-shaded look.

Agreed. Cliff, that shading on the Alclad looks flippin' insane! I'd thought about doing a post-shade for that effect with Tamiya smoke, but am now doubting it would turn out anywhere near as nice as the job you did.

Cliff - glad to see the Alclad shading worked out so well for ya! I was VERY hesitant using it the first time, but the results just speak for themselves. 

For anybody who's on the fence, it's really not that bad at all. Honest.

I'm a big fan of Alclad now, I've had all kinds of problems with the undercoat but the Alclad seems to pretty much fool-proof.

One of the absolute best kits in the scale, IMO! I've got three in the stash as is...and two already built.

Lo and Behold I finally have some progress & pics to share. Cowling and props pretty much done aside from some light weathering I'll still do, especially on the prop.This has taken a number of short snippets at the bench to knock this part out. I just need to get past the step daughters this weekend and then get back to a more regular bench schedule and get to finishing up the rest. Indeed, working with Alclad has been interesting, a good bit of trial and error but I'm certainly pleased with the results.

Figure I should expand on my process. The NMF is Aclad Aircraft Aluminum. MM french blue for the blue and MM olive drab and faded olive drab for the anti-glare panel. The anti-glare panel was masked off and then the cowling  was coated with Alclad gloss coat. Here is where I discovered something interesting. The Gloss coat dulled the NMF immensely, more than I prefered. I then remasked and shot a coat of aircraft aluminum on top of the gloss coat and out came a smooth shiney finish. Cool. The decals were applied and an oil wash of black and umber mix. Then I applied a coat of Alclad light sheen producing a rather nice appearance.

Hey There Gents, Alright, the oldest step daughter has just had our first grandchild and the youngest step daughter got married of this last weekend. Now that these two life consuming, yet wonderful, events have passed I can now make some more serious progress. I've got the anti glare panel and blue id stripe painted on and am now masking them off as to shot another coat of aircraft aluminum in order to obtain a more uniform finish. I will apply that this weekend and thus moving on to the decals. Here is where she sits as of now.
