Kbuzz and Deattilio, I am glad you guys like the stowage so far. I was working on painting up the last few detail stowage items today. Last night I scratchbuilt a couple TA-1 phone cases from sprue and strip styrene, and sanded an ammo can to be a TA-312 phone in its carry bag. I then added some thread to a empty wire spool and super glued that in place. Then it was a case of painting up a M-16A1 for the turret, some cots, and a set of binos. I also did detail painting on the fire control equipment in the turret and painted the Vulcan barrels Humbrol Gun Metal.
final bitsof stowage to be added

Deattilio, I never had the MOLLE pack. I did try the CFP-90 pack, but after a very hairy jump with one I went back to the large ruck. I still own one. Your Amtrack is looking great and I look forward to the next set of pics.
F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!
U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!
N is for NO SURVIVORS...

stikpusher, the good ole ALICE packs look spot on and preferred the days of hiking those over the much larger MOLLE. The cammie net’s all folded up look good too, and clearly remember not looking forward to unrolling, much less rerolling those things!
I got the first coat onto the AAV and even managed to nearly finish the starboard track shroud. I reverted to the plastic shrouds vice the PE because I was not sure how successful I would have been at filling in the foot step on the PE part. The green came out a bit too dark and the brown not yellow enough for my liking but, it will do and weathering should tone it down a bit. I used Archer transfers for “LOWRIDER” and worked without any fuss. I did not bother painting the hog’s slab sides because they will be getting covered with EAAK.
WIP:Trying to get my hobby stuff sorted - just moved and still unpacking.
"Gator, Green Catskill....Charlie On Time"
Wow!! Looking good, Stik. Lotsa great detail there and realistic stores.
Ken
Today was a busy day for my duck hunter. I applied a pin wash of Burnt Umber to the track, and also to most of the stowage items. Then once the wash had been cleaned up and dried it was time to start attaching stowage.
Camo net, vehicle tarp, one ruck and a couple cases of MREs on the right side
Camo net pole bag and another ruck on the front
Oil cans with lead foil tie down straps to the back of the hull
and a couple rucks in the turret stowage bin
I still need to paint the gun and vision blocks, add the antennas, and do a bit more weathering.
Cool Dupes! Looking forward to your RATT Rig
Today was mainly some sanding and painting little things for better fit and look on the stowage. And I made some shoulder straps out of lead foil for a couple rucks I am gonna put in the turret stowage bin.
before paint
and after
the rucks with the sleeping mats will be stowed elsewhere, the smaller ones are going on the turret.
Alllllllrighty, the spring shows are done...can finally get back on my WIPs, including the M1037. Everything is built and primed, just need to get some time in the spray booth.
Pics to come when I've got some!

That turret is looking beautiful! Some serious attention to detail there.
I have been working on stowage for my duck hunter but nothing worth taking any new pics yet. Possibly tomorrow.
Okay Vets, we have just under two months left until the end date here....
That Tuna Boat is looking GREAT!!! As far as the vision blocks go, both AFV Club and Eduard make reflective Mylar foil stickers that look amazing in-scale. Not sure if they are accurate for a 'Track (from what I've seen, I think the AAV's vision blocks are more blue/green, the Mylar appliques have a pinkish/blue hue depending on the light). At any rate, YOU're the expert, not me!
Keep the pics coming!
Semper,
Ski
I have nearly finished the UGWS on my AAV. The exhaust staining was a signature on pre-RAM/RS variants; we would keep the turret turned outboard which put the port-aft section of the turret directly in the path of the exhaust. It was more pronounced because although tractors would go through the IROAN process at regular intervals, the UGWS turrets did not. We would pull the turret and place a sheet of would over the position for transportation to rebuild, the turret would then be placed on the freshly painted AAV joining the unit. We also had to remove all the EAAK and either place it in its transport boxes in the rear of the vehicle where it would be sandblasted and repainted during IROAN or it was mounted on another AAV.
I have not figured or decided on how I will paint the vision blocks as yet, that’s the current little brain teaser.
Close, but no cigar! That would have been TOO much of a coincidence, but the two aircraft are at least close cousins. Thanks for posting the detail photo, looking forward to seeing more of your work.
usmcski, The same helicopter would have been one heck of a coincidence! Being a modeler I click pictures that most would not bother with and made sure to grab a shot of the tail number. She is close but is/was -209.
stikpusher, The dry transfers look good, I will be using the same thing on my 1/72 LVTs. That is a weird looking camouflage pattern, nice work.
kbuzz01, The cockpit may not be accurate but it surely looks the part.
I've finally got started on the TF-102. Almost finished with the cockpit tub. Although it's not quite accurate for the TF, I took 2 Eduard PE sets for the F-102, modified them to fit the TF instrument panel. Think it looks a lot better than what came with the conversion kit.
Now, onward to the hard jobs.
Looking good, Rob, nice work! Those tires look pretty rugged - just don't drive her too fast!
I would not worry too much about the Academy tires. I built mine over 10 years ago and they are still fine... unlike my Dragon BTRs and BRDMs... I'm glad you got back to work on this kit. I was starting to wonder about some of the other builds here. What color are you using for the Sand? It looks very light in these photos.
More WIP on the Academy M998 HMMWV kit. I'm trying to attain the look my truck had as one that was originally NATO 3-color but had endured countless repaints of desert sand after field exercises, NTC deployments, a trip to Desert Storm and a return trip to Kuwait in 1992. Even after all those repaints, the sand always came off after trips to the wash rack and there were always missed paint spots where the paint booth crew never bothered to reach.
I've been rather lazy working on this truck and lost interest when I joined a couple of other GBs and started building my more usual 1/72 scale armor. I still haven't decided on whether or not to use the resin wheels. The vinyl tires look to have a seam where the injected vinyl meets opposite of the sprue attachment point. I have a feeling the tires will split at this spot in the future.
Thanks Ken. The simple paint jobs are not much fun though... LOL! And this one is easier than the MERDC stuff that was so prevalent in the early days of my career. That TF-102 looks like it is gonna be an interesting conversion... And it would be a year or two away from completion at my build rate.
Really pretty, Stik! That paint job is too complicated for me - I'll stick to simple aircraft. Speaking of which, I'm just getting started on the TF-102 (did I say something about simple - scratch all that) and have posted on the Berny GB page 9, so won't repeat it all here. Anyway, it's underway and I should have it finished in a year or two. What? Ohmygosh - Memorial Day 2012!!??
More progress today. I airbrushed on a coat of Raw Umber, followed by a coat of Raw Sienna onto the tracks, running gear and abit on to the areas of the lower hull.
and the bumper codes now that they are"dusted" a bit...
deattilio, I will pass that on to the guys in charge there... I just show up for the meetings At best, I can only show up to six a year due to my work schedule.
And now back to our regularly scheduled build. Oh what a PITA to use dry transfers for bumper numbers... alignment is a real beast to achieve. But under a layer of weathering I dont think it will be too noticiable...
5th Infantry Division (Mech) 1st Battalion 55th Air Defense Artillery Regiment
Bravo Battery, 2nd Platoon, 3rd Track
I also did some detail painting on the lights and tow cable. I am gonna add smoke and clear red over the appropriate tail light lenses and clear over the headlights.
Great pics, thanks for sharing!! I can't tell, but that BuNo is either 159206, or 159202. If it's '202, that's the plane I modeled! Must have been a fun approach to the compound, never done THAT one!
usmcski, I loaded a couple pictures from the Family Day of the Huey on the AAV Ramp. Let me know if you decide to make it down to 21 Area and you’ll be able to take pretty much any pictures you need. Must warn though, I only have couple more months at AAS before I retire to the 1st CivDiv. I’ll be attending Spartan to attain my A&P to begin my next career.
stikpusher, The group is more than welcome to stop by the museum. If you let me know ahead of time I can schedule to make sure there isn’t a PME or something for the time the group will be on deck.
Ken, your P-51 is added to the front page. My apologies for slowing on my duties here.
Deattilo, the LVT is coming along great. I am looking forward to the final results. I know the guys in the AMPS chapter here in Orange County are talking about taking a visit to the Amtrack museum there at Pendleton.
Ski, I don't know what last detail(s) you plan on putting on that Huey, but I am sure it will be great. Keep up the great work.
OK, this weekend, I really will get some progress done on my Vulcan track. The Verlinden dry transfers that I ordered to do the bumper codes with arrived so I will be having a crack at those and then getting to work on the weathering.
Tuna boat is looking GREAT! Can't wait to see it complete, nice work.
I missed the Huey fly-in, I was with IMEF at the time and was probably finishing up my year in OEF. By the time I got back to the flightline, all the Novembers were gone (we're straight up Yankee only now).
One of these days I have to build a current AAV, so far my armor builds have been WWII only. If/when I do, I'll be sure to stop by the ramp and get some reference material!
usmcski, We haven’t been putting much work into the museum since building the Japanese machine gun pit. Hopefully these little LVTs I am working on will make their way into the museum as well. Doubt they would fair well in a move across the country, especially if I was to trust TMO to pack and ship or even subject it to potential of the girlfriend’s or cat’s well intending paws. Don’t know if you were around tad over a year ago when we got a Huey to land on the ramp at the battalion for a family day. Interesting sight.
I got my UGWS painted and sanded couple spots down to show some wear. Weathering should flatten and slightly darken it.
I knew it! I had the privilege of seeing your four LVT-4s firsthand in the XO's office. When I was stationed at Del Mar, I used to volunteer at the AMTRAC Museum. During several conversations with the school XO, I noticed the 'Tracs and was immediately impressed, great job!
Looking forward to seeing how your tuna boat turns out, keep up the good work!
usmcski, I did have several LVTs in the museum, an LVTA-1, an LVT-3 and a set of four LVT-4s marked to represent the four Amphibian Tractor Battalions that landed on Iwo Jima. They were taken out when we were doing some work in the museum and currently reside in the XO’s office but will eventually make their way back to the museum.I made some progress on my AAV, the UGWS in particular. I got the tan base coat applied along with some pre-shading to replicate the exhaust stains that were typical on the pre-RAM/RS tractors. This weekend I plan on applying the green top coat. In the background are my 1/72 LVTs, most of which received an initial coat of primer along with the in-progress 1/100 C-47 and Mi-24.
stikpusher Ken and Ski, those are some beautiful builds! Are you both calling them done? If so, I will add them to the front page here.
Ken and Ski, those are some beautiful builds! Are you both calling them done? If so, I will add them to the front page here.
Yup. It's not my best, but it's done.
You don't happen to have a few 1/72 LVTs on display at the AMTRAC School, do ya?
usmcski, that is a beautiful job on the Huey. There is a derelict hulk sitting in the supply lot on Camp Del Mar that I keep forgetting to tote my camera along to capture.
