Jack: I don't know what the chipping medium does exactly. I knoe the guy on the website I found this technique was using a vallejo product, so I thought it was the chipping medium... I'll just ask the guys at my LHS when I get me the paints I need for the Tiger...

Eric, thank you very much for your kind words. But if you happen to be going to Nationals and see the caliber of the GB work that our Chapter is sending there, I had a very high bar to aspire to reach. No to mention, mine (I feel) is middle of the road for that group entry. I had to push beyond my comfort zone here and I think that helped.

I have some kind of a problem:
I just placed an order at Hannants including a set of PE fenders (Eduard) for my King Tiger. I wanted to build it OOB, but I just can't get along with the supplied fenders. I want to build my kitten with damaged/missing fenders, so I basically have to use PE parts. I just hope they arrive in time (only 3 weeks left...). I can build and apply them after the model is finished, but I won't call it finished untill they are in place.
SP: Fantastic work!!! I love the Tiger, the figures, the base, the prickly pears- I love the whole thing!!!

Clemons: I've used some of the AK Interactive Chipping Fluid and had good luck with it, I've also had good luck with regular old hair spray. I can't really tell the difference and one of the big guys with the technique has said the special chipping fluid is just really expensive hair spray in a bottle and to save your money.

After finishing with AK 022 - Africa Dust Effects - an enamel color - went back over to feather it some with white spirits. Move on to MIG - ModelMakerz - AK pigments. Started first AK Pigment Dark Steel (AK-086) and went over areas to show some wear on common tracked areas, the track, road wheels etc. Then using a mix of Desert Sand and Gulf War Sand and water applied around track and road wheels. Once dried used a brush and removed until I liked the effect. Photos included. Armor86

I just came back from a 4-day trip to the tank museum in Munster! I have loads of pics of many WW2 Vehicles if anyone is interested! I'll post some of them (and a link to dropbox for the complete folder) in the next 2 weeks!
I can tell you one thing: Those tanks are very impressive when you actually stand next to them! I thought of them being a lot smaller than they actually were. Especially the Panther, Tiger and King Tiger are very intimidating...

I actually climbed on top of the tanks to get some good pics of the upper surfaces. I did'nt manage to climb the Tiger 2, Panther and Jagdpanther though, because they are so huge and have almost nothing to get a grip on, so there was no way of getting up there without the guys working at the museum (tour guides,...) noticing it...
If you want any pics right now, just let me know and I'll try to get them named and uploaded ASAP!
Now it's time to work on my kitten!

As a student of armor I often have questions.
May I ask what the purpose of the netting on the barrel is for? I'm assuming camo? What did you make it out of?

IBuildOne48 - King Tiger and base look great - on the question regarding the placement of netting over the main gun barrel - It would have provided concealment of the gun, (Allied Air Power) and made it hard to ID the vehicle as a Tiger tank - likely the main netting would have been placed over the top of the vehicle tie on large trees (stored on left hull side) and would have placed netting over the main gun. There are several b/w photos of vehicle no. 132 with the netting rolled up and fasten along the left side as well as placed over the vehicle while parked under trees. Photos show the netting was left on the gun barrel. Used an aftermarket Verlinden Productions Camouflage Netting and it matched the size seen in the b/w photos. Looking at the model with the netting placed - the gun barrel doesn't stand out and in brush would have concealed it from approaching targets! Armor86

Holy cow Dan! The Tiger looks gorgeous! All those layers really make it look realistic.
Stik - Wonderful job on the Tiger and dio. The figures are superb and really add to the overall effect. A great job on your 1st dio effort. I hope mine goes as well when I get around to one.
Ibuild148 - Great base. Looks like you and me will be sprinting to the finish line. Less than 2 weeks away... OMG.

Ernest - Welcome back!
Slow progress for me... feeling the pressure now. I think I have the tracks to where I want them. Next is to get them on the beast. These are the Bronco indies. My only gripe is that they are relatively fragile after assembled. The detail is great though. Every bit as nice as the 2x$ Friuls. The Friuls make up for it in ruggedness. This is a base layer of Tamiya Hull Red (EDIT - it was Tamiya Flat Brown), then mixed up (pigments) Mig Dark Mud with some mineral spirits and dabbled it on the primer coat. After that dried I did the same with Mig Dry Mud. Then I mixed up some Abteilung 502 Buff with mineral spirits and added in some AK Light Dust and hit mostly the edges. I followed that up by making a paste from AK Dark Steel and mineral spirits and dry brushed it on the tread. After it was dried I buffed it some to make parts of it shiny. It was hard to show that effect in the pics, but you get the idea.
More to come as I DO plan on finishing this thing before 9/1!

Hi all -- it's been a long time but I do intend to try to finish my KT by the deadline. I've just cleared from my bench a project that's been too long in the doing, and the KT is next up. I went back and reread my early posts to get reoriented to the project, and it seems I haven't touched it in ten months -- I had the paintjob done on p69!
Well, touch-ups needed, so that's my next job. I changed the gas bottle for my AB this morning, so I'm all set to rip into it... Touch up the camo, then shade and fade coats, and on with the finishing round.
