Greg here's where it sits now . I have no positive ideas on what the final finish will look like . I go with the flow . If something looks good then i tend to go with that idea and hopefully not over do it . Sometimes i do over do an idea and then i have to back up and redo it . This look so far is new for me . I used my recently aquried mig pigments , some chalks and colored pencils to get to this look .

Hey guys... need to get caught up here while some weathering is drying on the Panther... wish I could be on more to stay up on the comments. Would be easier than doing massive updates once a week or two. Tongue Tied

Ben - Nice tracks. I've though about burnishing beforehand, but was afraid if I had to drill out holes again the shiny stuff might show through again. Or that the pins would be seen in the same shiny way after assembly. How's it working out? Maybe the weathering just clears all that up...

Bish - Superb job on the build. It looks like my worst PE nightmare! But you manage to get through it seeming without a hitch. I will require much more practice to get there. It's gonna be fun to see that machine with some color on it.

bobbaily - Get crackin' man! Big Smile Want some more Panther company... I love seeing how others tackle the same or similar models. You can learn so much.

Eric - I know I'm late to the party here, but I offer my condolences for the loss of your cat regardless. Maybe you could make the Jagdpanther or Tiger a dedication build?

malone duke - Man, I thought that was 1:35 from the first picture. You've done an amazing job here. You, Marc and taxtp (and anyone else brave enough to venture smaller than 1:35) have my deepest respect with the quality in which you build those smaller scales. I'd have to buy an Optivisor for sure.

Carl - I love watching your progress and getting to follow along with the tutorials you provide. They are very educational. You're paint job and decals came out great! I'm sorta new to the whole Future coats concept. You'll see that (lack of) on my build... but it something I will definitely try on my next build. It looks like it provides a better surface for weathering as well as protecting what you have already completed, and want to stay that way. I've made note that you deleted/resprayed a color of camo that didn't turn out quite right. Good deal.

Marc - Can't wait to see how the paint by numbers comes out! Cool

Which brings me to SMJ - Well, everyone else has said it... truly awesome and awe inspiring work. I absolutely love the way you've finished this Tiger off. Not only does it look amazing, but you've managed to capture that dreary/oppressive feel from the photos. I'd be very interested to know how you created the  chunky mud effect. Both materials and application, if you're willing and have the time to share... For the record, I think both of the photos with the figure on the turret should be posted. You really have to see the front AND rear of that Tiger. You can't miss out on either. YesYesYes and whatever you're drinking, sir.

Ben, Thanks so much.  I am real happy with the way it turned out.  And I kind of like that scale.  Big enough to do some detail work yes save a little shelf space at the same time.  Hate the metal tub though.

Carl... dude... that turret is beyond cool looking. It's O=G. It was getting to hard to make letters so since the g was mostly round seemed to make sense.  OMG.. I'm making sense nowConfused

Thanks Dave.

Turret almost done.  Some touching up to do.  This is going to be a long tedious process.  But I think once its all faded and washed and grudged up it will look OK.

Hasen , good to hear your going to try out the Future in the future .......Hmm.....huh.? Just remember to thin it before trying airbrush it . I use a liquid glass cleaner , like Windex , and thin it at about a 50 % ratio .

Marc , hey man thanks . Thast a great beggining . Looking forward to seeing more !

Excellent dark washes on ur KT!  You used color pencil?  Jeez, how did you use it?  No wonder your KT looks real good.

No update on my Tiger.  With my wife being gone I thought I'd have more bench time but being Mr Mom sure takes a lot of energy out of you at end of day. LOL  Mothers really rules you know...

Carl, that looks awesome. Really looks the part.

Marc, that is pretty creative with the templates.

Dave, thanks for the condolances. I'm making progress.

Wish I could make some progress on the jagdpanther, but work has burned me out. Sad Not sure when I'll get back to it. The Tiger is on indefinite hold. I need to get back on my regular schedule.

Marc-great idea on the drawing the template on-question-what brand/type of paints are you using?

Carl-outstanding weathering on the KT....very impressive.

Dave-thanks for the motivation-I hope to get a little work done today & tomorrow.  Heading out of town on Tuesday for the Thanksgiving Holiday with the in-laws (good folks....always a good time) so most of my time will be spend looking for on-line sales.

Bish-looks good-can't wait to see more works in progress....and btw-Happy Birthday!  Cake

Marc - Nice work on the camo. As I recall you brush painted that? If that is indeed true then you are pretty dang handy with the bristle stick.

Bish - Excellent work!!! I hear ya concerning the PE. I' m just kind of wrestling around with mine but, I have to say I am getting a might more comfortable with it.

I'm overdo as far as giving an update on my Tiger. I'm currenrly waiting on a brass mg34 to arrive so I can get the hull all completed. Also, Iwas not pleased with the Eduard exhaust shrouds as the upper and lower ridges you are supposed to create by running a ball poin pen along the inside just didn't come out satifactorily. I then found a Voyager brass PE set with shrouds that are much better. Also came with some nice clamps that I will probably mix in with the Eduard stuff. The focus on my current endeavors has been on the turret. Got it glued together with the hatches glued closed. For expedience sake I did not paint the interior as it will be all closed up. Today I am gluing on the PE zimm and hope to get a bit more odds and ends done.

Thanks guys.  The paint is Vallejo.  Without a doubt the best paint for brushing I have ever used.  The idea of drawing out the pattern was picked up over at MSC.  Even with that it is difficult.  can;t imagine trying to figures out the pattern as you go.

Andy , first thanks ! I used a red pencil to add some small red marks and a black pencil to draw in some of the marks on the sides .

Eric , thanks .

Bish , looks good . I like the stand for the turret !

Bob , much appreciated !

Marv , Valejo must be good paint , The camo looks real good .Better and less messy than the tooth paste experiment . Is the Valjo better at being airbrushed that Tamiya or Model Master acrylic ?

Hi guys - great work going on everywhere (not that I'm surprised),

I've been really busy at work and have been working most weekends recently so I'm getting an hour here and an hour there BUT I have a proper little photo update to give now re my Friuls - plus I'm on holiday on Wednesday so I'm hoping to get this tank well prepped for final weathering next weekend going into December. I'd LIKE to have this complete by 25th December so it counts as a proper 2012 build.

Like I said this update all relates to my Friul work. I had experienced problems with AK's solution not taking to certain areas - especially where CA has had to be used to secure the track pins SO I decided to blacken the Friuls first then hit with the pin-vise and assemble. I wasn't sure how this would work and Hasenpfeffer summed up a lot of the issues that I'd come across perfectly in a recent post of his! See below by the bullet point!

  • Ben - Nice tracks. I've though about burnishing beforehand, but was afraid if I had to drill out holes again the shiny stuff might show through again. Or that the pins would be seen in the same shiny way after assembly. How's it working out? Maybe the weathering just clears all that up.

Righto. I had to work from home yesterday and made a bunch of 15 link lengths of Friuls that could be assembled in one go when I'd made up 95 links which is about the correct amount for a Tiger I. I find if you make a length and keep adding to it the run takes on a bit of a bent look when complete and the run isn't perfectly straight. making these little short runs and adding them together stopped that happening this time.

I assembed and installed the right hand run this afternoon with the left hand run to go on later. They'll be coming off again as it was just a dry fit and like Hasenpfeffer raised in his point above - the drilling out of each hole made the track pin entry holes show bare metal where the drill bit had been so when both runs are complete I'll be flooding the two runs with Mig Russian Earth Pigment and thinner to show a nice dry mud finish. If this still leaves the bare metal around the holes I'll be dry-brushing black oil paint over the mouth of the holes to sort that problem out. These are BY FAR my best Friuls yet and I do honestly think that treating them with the Blackening Solution first is the way to go. There are no missed spots at-all.

When the two runs are off I'll re-treat them with the solution that I used before as it always has a bit of reaction power left in it. It will help me fill in a few of the odd spots that I couldn't do with the toothbrush as obviously they weren't assembled when I originally - it helps to treat them fully assembled as the toothbrushing thing is a lot easier when all the links are all assembled!

I used 97 links on this side. As always one link extra was too loose and one link less looked over-taught! I may fine tune later but it's okay at the minute.

When that is done as one last effect I'll take the mini flat-file to the raised areas to show some wear to the track faces and guide horns - the base is going to made up to look like a rocky/rubble type track.

Finally I also fitteded treated Friul links onto the spare link mountings onto the turret wall.

Due to my lack of display space I'm going to use the base shown below with the tank mountd on it in the position shown. I'm thinking Northern Italy above Cassino Ridge and I'm seeing mountains i.e. some rubble/rock detail and some grass tufts. I'll also add some spent shell casings to the rear engine deck and base - there's the reason for leaving the rear turret hatch open - I still need to paint that to provide interior detail in the correct colour.

One question - re painting the inside of the round turret hatch on the side? Should I paint the inside all 'off white' except the hatch release bar and handles? Also, should the off white go right around the outside of the door and stop where the outside basecoat is? What about the 'frame' thhat closes around the round hatch - I'm assuming that should be off white, too?

Cheers guys,

Ben - have a good week! Toast

Hey Ben she looks great ! About the inside of the hatch ......i'm no expert but as far as i know those areas would be the off white color  .............Model master makes that color , i believe its called "interior white " or something similar . HTH ..........maybe wait and see what someone else says .

Cheers Shell!

I've got some Gunze Off White which will be just fine I hope.

She's coming on real good. I'm really taking my time with this one and I can tell the difference when I compare it with some of my older builds that I'd rushed.

Ben :-)

Bob, thank you on both counts. Me to, just glad i am getting somwhere.

Joe, glad to here it. It can be a struggle, but the results can make it worth while.

carl, the stand is from the Tamiya paint stand, as is the other piece. I believe its meant for car bodies, but seem to be ideal for tank turrets as well.

Carl, Ben, the inside of hatches was usually the same as the exterior colour, due to them often being left open in combat. I know this applies to the commanders hatch, not 100% sure about the escape hatch. But there are a few photos that show them painted in the interior colour.

Dunno if exterior instead of the the elfenbein... that creamy off white... necessarily applies here since the commanders hatch lifts and rotates out instead of flopping open  A drivers hatch etc that flopped open I would think you what the exterior color. A guy in a Tempest doensn't needs a big white thing to shoot at.

Vallejo make a pre thinned AB paint... ModelAir... that's very nice.   I did my Enigma with a seven shade set of those. I have extremely limited experience with thinning and spraying their regular color, but I have and is was fine.  Never been a big fan of MM acrylics but Tamiya is one of the best spraying paints...IMHO.

My hands down favorite paint to put through an AB is MM enamels.   But i like  the way oils and white spirits method of weathering works and looks.. so, (in my best Jeff Goldblum/Malcolm Jurassic park voice) there you have it.

Ditto!!! Yes

Carlo- Thanks for the color pencil answer! Beer

Ben- I really dig the color of spare tracks!  Your Tiger is looking real GOOD!!!

Bish- Can't get over the look of huge hull with tiny Pz turret! LOL  Looking great so far!

Guys- Finally I found *** last night and worked til VERY LATE... Stick out tongue

Kit parts for barrel cleaners looked OK so I went for Voyager option of course! LOL

Improved look... Voyager instruction wanted me to insert .05mm plastic rod into the hole.  Impossible!  I used .05mm dress pin instead which made the job a lot easier.  Then I cut it off..

Clasps for the steel cables...

Using masking tape to keep rod from falling inside the loop...

Result...

Most tools have been glued to the hull too..

My wife is back home from NOLA... her TWIN sister and her family is staying here for the Thanksgiving.  Hoping I get to sneak into basement this week... here's my nephew wearing Vietnam Era US helmet I brought at an antique store last Friday.

Thanks for looking!

Marc-thanks for the info on the Vallejo.  You mentioned that it was pre thinned for AB, but do you thin for brush painting?  And have you tried Vallejo for airbrushing and if so, what did you think?

Andy-the PE looks great-you are in route to a fantastic looking build.  Are you using a PE bending tool and if so, which one?

Hey guys, man a lot of great updates from everyone. Yes

Just a small update on the front end.  After studying several pics of  Tigers in Tunisia, a specific detail on Tamiya's front hull visor seemed out of place.  The two holes that are apertures for the driver's periscope looked to be sitting a bit high.  After comparing to the AFV Club (Skybow) kit, I decided I wanted to fix it.

Luckily, the Tamiya kit had a spare bow plate without the two holes.  Using that, I measured things up before comitting an exacto blade to bore the holes, and finished with an appropriate sized drill bit.  Of course, this marred the upper edge of the visor block, so I cut a strip of thin plastic sheet and glued it to the top, filling in with putty and covered with some surfacer.

++++++++++++++++++++++   I do have question about the periscopes for the forward hull hatches.  The kit provides nothing to fit inside the covers, so can they be left hollow or does something representing the blocks need to be placed in there?

regards,

Jack

Hey Bob - Vallejo Model Air is pre-thinned. Their Panzer Aces and Model Color series are not as far as I know. (At least I still thin those...)

Hi guys,

Thanks for the words about my Tiger. I cannot wait to start getting some muck and grime on this thing!

Andy - how you do that PE is amazing (and insane) - I take my hat off to you as I would be reduced to tears and I've tried an Optivisor too. I hase Astigmatism in both eyes so my vision is awful without my contacts or glasses. When the Optivisor was on I got terrible triple vision and mega headaches! I'd buy one otherwise as it would help me a lot!

Looking great buddy!

Ben, sorry man, did not mean to slight you. The Tiger is looking fierce.

Jack, yours is coming along nicley too.

Andy that is some really incrdeible PE work my firend.

Bob I masked and sprayed all the turret marking on my Char with the regular Vallejo colors thinned with distilled water.  I can't remember if I put a drop or 2 of retarder in the mix or not.  NEVER use alcohol with this stuff.  The paint turns to goo and it's a major AB cleaning.
