ARGH!  I just discovered something.l  When I picked which kit to do for the F/A-18, I looked on the RAAF website to find out which ones they operated.  I assumed it was the F which is basically just a slightly upgraded E, so I picked up an E kit.  They also fly the A/B versions.  But I thought it was the E(F) that the decals I got were for.  My Decals showed up in the mail today and as it turns out, they are for the A/B version, so after a week and a half work, I am going to have to start from scratch...  This is not turning out to be one of my better days.  Now I have to find another kit and start over.

Hi guys.  It's been a busy week so far.  I have the assembly stage on the F/A-18 almost completed.  I'm starting the pre-finish gap filling later on today.  It went together amazingly well.  Some small issues but nothing major.  I have been taking pics during the process, I just decided to send them all up at once when I am done.  That way I don't jinx myself.  I'm still waiting for the decals for her.  I'm also trying to research what a typical load of stores would be, or if I should put on anything underwing, since this is a specially marked anniversary bird.  I'll let you folks know how it works out.  Have a good one...

Thanks for that Jack, I didn't even think bright red roundels existed in the desert existed although it makes complete sense given they were RAF aircraft. It looks like I may have a choice between which ones I want to use now.

I remember reading, over at Britmodeller forum, where possibly a bright red was used for roundels and such, converting over to a dull red sometime in 1942.  If interested in some reading, here is that thread.

I have some roundel decals with orange centers that are for South Africa squadrons, but not certain if this was official during wartime.

Wow, those are some bright roundels. It looks closer to orange than red. Glad you have spares closer the real colour.

I've done the camo on my armoured car so I had a look at the kit I will be building here. I've decided to buy a resin cockpit as the one in the kit really is too shallow so one Aires cockpit coming up. This will be my first resin cockpit so I'm looking forward to having a go at it.

I was also considering some resin exhausts as the kit ones come in halves which made me a bit worried about trying to clean up the seams on those small stacks. However pictures of Allison engines seem to show seams present so I'm going to try them out first.

If there is another thing that needs to be replaced it definitely has to be the decals. The red on the kit decals is way too bright but I have some spares from the old Revell Monogram Tomahawk so it's a pretty straight forward swap. Although the underwing roundels on the R-M sheet are larger than on the Trumpeter one. I wont tell if you don't. 

Yeh.  in the U.S. it seems like writing "Fragile!" "Do Not Bend!" or anything of that nature on a package is taken as a challenge by the mail handlers..  My Dad used to be one.  He told us some horror stories about packages and how they get treated sometimes.  That's probably why he would always ship any packages UPS. lol

Sparrow: Yeah what is it with postal companies and their heavy pointy objects? A few years back I bought a hardcover book on e-bay and it was sent in pretty good packaging. However Australia Post still managed to spear something through the package and damaged part of the spine. I was not impressed.

Also note the heavy chipping around the wing roots.

Pretty much yeah. Same basic stencils and everything. Only things that changed are whats included in the decals. Name on the side, roundels, serial number. Everything else is the same, so kit decals can be used. Thats what i did for all the little things like the walkways on the wings.

Don't worry about it.  It looked like something heavy and pointy got set on it.  They should scan well.   I already threw out the bubble mailer. lol   I'll send up an image of the scan.  Since a bunch of these birds were former USN and USMC, I will assume they are the same basic colors, but faded a bit.

Are you able to post a photo? I posted it in a bubble wrap envelope that should have protected them.

ScorpioMikey, The decals showed up.  They got pretty beat up in transit, but I think I can scan and fix the damage, then print out a new set on decal paper.  This is going to be a sweet corsair....    Still waiting for the F/A-18 decals.  I did find out that the main color for the F-18 is actually Blue Angel Blue according to the FS color listed on the decals sheet.

Yeh.  It was missing all the underwing stores, the port landing gear bay doors and half of the landing gear wheel for that side as well.  And one of the landing gear doors for the other side was badly mangled...  Fortunately I used eBay to get it so getting my money back won't be a big issue.  In the meantime, I need to find a replacement.  I could get a Revell F/A-18E, or that ESCI/ERTL A model.  there's also a Scalecraft A model which is probably the same thing.  I have to keep it under $20 so my selection is somewhat limited.  I was originally going to get a Hasegawa kit, but I wasn't able to sell my 1/72 canberra to finance it.. lol  I wat to try and pick one tonight so it could still get in the mail tomorrow.  I have no idea when those decals will get here from Canada though.  And I need to find out what the exact FS numbers the callouts on the decal sheet are for.  I have the Dark Sea Blue, but I need Intermediate Blue, Oxford Blue and Bright Blue.  Oh yeh, and some kind of light gray.  The problem is the only Oxford Blue I can find is from TopFlite for RC planes.  and none of the color names are useful since theres like 6 different colors from various companies called Intermediate Blue, and they are all different.  Their equivalents listed for the Oxford Blue, but they are all different too.  So I need to get ahold of the decals so I can actually read the FS numbers for the callouts.  The only images of the color sheet is too small to read.  That's that graphic I put up earlier in the thread.  It's just too small for me to reed, and zooming in makes it unreadable when it pixelates.
