Whatever scheme you decide for the dora just stay away from Tamiya's decals!

So glad you are doing a Dora. I think youll like it. What scale is it? You probably already have some good ideas as to what to build, But if not,(just a hint) look to Jg26. They were the Luftwaffe's "Top Guns" and have many great looking Doras to choose from.

Jester: Eric I saw your ink based wash for the panel lines and that looks great. Those panel lines came out superb!

lawdog: Another vote for the Tamiya D-9 from your post a page back! I  have to say again that I completely agree. Will comment more on this in a sec.

Everybody: Well folks just trying to catch up with all the activity on here. Getting back into the swing of things with stuff around the house, work and of course---modelling. I finished up with my mottle on the A8 two days ago, painted the 76 on the lower sides and bottom yesterday and masked and painted the black exhaust panel on the port side today. The latest most breaking news however came in the form of a box that arrived for me in the mail yesterday. I received my Tamiya D-9!  I only hope I can squeeze this into the GB. Its a great looking kit so far as I can tell in the box. Folks like Eric, Doug and Matt got really looking at building one of these things. Still waiting on the Airies engine/cockpit update set from luckymodel. I've got time on that due to the fact that I still have my hands full with this Eduard build.

Aside from that there are some good things happening in here. Absolutely love this group build thanks to you all who ultimitely make it happen with all of your input,participation and just making this an overall fun experience, Joe

Eric - Now I like that. It would seem that you have an excellent idea there that I just may have to try out. The effect is outstanding.

Rigid - Nicely done engine. Looks excellent.

Got started the other night, I really do like the Hasagawa kits, So far no issues and nicely detailed. As always, if availadle I like to start with the engine. Hope the BMW Radial comes out well. I've not done one in awhile, They wrote in one book I'm reading that a pilot with Jg51 one time brought his 190 home after combat and landed safely with 2 cylinders shot completly away.

Thanks Nathan for the info and the kind words!! That panel line should be easy enough to add and wash even at this point in the build. Funny thing is, I had scribed it once already but after glancing at teh Eduard drawings and seeing it was missing I filled and sanded it back smooth.

Thanks Need!! Yeah, this wash is the most simple thing to make and apply and get good results. I always use Testors Lacquer gloss before decals and to seal the decals and this stuff wont begin to phase it when you go to remove the excess! Can't wait to see what you do with those 190's!

Jester - thanks for the wash tip, great result on your build! Very timely from my point of view, just had a bad experience on a recent build where  i managed to wash off some of my enamel paintwork  after applying Alclad Gloss and laquer wash mix. Forgot the basics - I like this ink and soap idea!

Here is my contribution to this GB, two 1/48's , boxes open, one Hasa A-4 from Russian front in white scheme, the Arii is an A-8.will get the ball rolling today!

Hey, sweet wash mix Eric. Nice looking build. Real great job with the camo and decals. I Love doing washes, especially on these Eduard kits there's sooo much detail there to pop out. And yes, the cowling halves latch together in the middle, just like the Ta 152. Hope the pic helps:

OK boys and girls, absolute last photo update before I call this one done. This has to be one of my favorite parts of the build.....The Wash!!! Just seems like it comes alive at this point. I use a homebrew mix of Non-waterproof India ink, water, and a drop of dish soap. This costs about 2 bucks and will literally last a lifetime!!! So easy to apply and even easier to remove!

Here is the ink I use, picked up at the local Hobby Lobby

and the bottle I use to mix it in. If I had to guess this was mixed at 1/3 ink and 2/3 water with a drop of Dawn dish soap added to break the surface tension and allow it to flow.

Then just slather it on. No need to be particulary OCD about it

And removal after about 5-10 minutes of drying. It consists of mostly a folded paper towel and q-tips. Slightly dampened with most of the water squeezed out and just start lightly rubbing. I usually try to move perpendicular to the panel lines and not parallel.  And voila!!

One quick question though as my refs are limited and what I have contradicts the Eduard drawings. On the lower cowling where its painted yellow, was there a panel line that ran from front to back down the middle? Did this split open there like Matts 152 and swing upwards??

I have this HobbyBoss kit in my stash, it is a decent kit.  looks to be straight forward construction, the control surfaces are molded seperately,the panel lines are sublte and recessed (close to eudard's level) and has one painting/marking option  but other than that there are vey few options.  It does come with a one page color 4 view drawing of the only scheme for painting and decal reference and some very basic PE.  about the only thing that I didnt care for right out of the box was the torpedo and the rack for the torpedo, just looks too thick and not to scale to my eyes.

EagleCals does have AM decals that would work for this kit if you were looking for other options (and the decals include wooden flap decals [for the H as well as the C wings I think, since there are two sets and sizes])

Yeah, I've been looking for an H version too as seeing Matts really opened my eyes to them. Found one of the Dragon Expo H's on eBay but not sure I am going to spring for it.

Jester, Funny, as I was just looking at those very kits in the LHS last Monday. Heavily considered getting one when I realized that they are the short wing version. If I was to do a Ta 152 it would be a long wing as they are just cooler.

OK my friends... Butcher Bird Part II,  This will be a 1/32 Hasagawa Fw190A6, The kit comes with parts to do one of about 4 different variations. Other then a (Tru-Detail) resin pit, and decals from Strike Eagle it will be an OOB build. I will try to do honor to Obfw. Josef "Pepi" Jennewein. He flew 271 missions almost all with II/gp Jg51 on the Eastern Front. In his 271 missions he claimed 86 kills many of which were multiple victories on a single mission sometimes as many as 5 at one engagement. On July 27 after aerial combat Oberfeldwebel Jennewein force landed his Fw190 A 6 "Black 7" wnr 550181, behind Russian lines and neither he nor his plane were ever seen again.

Nice kit Joe Rix- I built that boxing and it was a dream. Almost did Schroeder's plane on the box art but went with some aftermarket instead.

Needbeer- Are you doing the Russian captured A-4? If so, check out the video on youtube of the russian evaluation of that plane. Its a great reference vid.

Hey guys, I thought I would pop in.  Nathan those are absolutely beautiful.  The striped cowl turned out fantastic. I think I have the same A-4 in the stash and its on my short "to do" list.   Jester, looking great.  You nailed that spiral from what I can see in the pic...no worries.  Looks like your in the home stretch there.  Joe #1 (figured you could be #1 since it is your group build...lol), your mottling skills are most impressive.  I can't wait to see it finished.  The Fritos look good too.  After I finish my P-38 for the twin boom GB, I may have to toss my hat in this ring again as I do love the 190.   I have to agree with what Joe #1 implied...and I would much rather build the Tamiya D-9, inaccuracies and all, than suffer another moment with the Eduard version.  I meant it when I said I would rather have a root canal.  Beautiful kit but geez.  I have an Eduard A-5 and A-6 in the stash and that radial looks like a nightmare, especially if you factor in the reported fit issues.  They might be there for a long time.

Matt- I keep hearing the HB 152 is cherry, haven't seen one myself so I don't know. The yellow tails/nose do have a way of pulling me in. This Eduard D-9, although finally seems to be coming together and definitely makes a good looking Dora, requires lots of attention and work. Closing up everything that is engineered to be open is a task, not so much on the cowl but for sure on the wings. If I'm not mistaken, the whole line of Eduard 190's is designed this way aren't they?

I have been waiting for my 1/32 Hasa A-5 to arrive, The Hasa A-4 arrived from same orderarrived  so it looks like A-5 has gone astray in the mail, hopefully only temporarily?

I've made a decision and will make a start this weekend now that I am finshing off some other builds

Hasa and Tamiya seem to be the favoured kits in this GB so who am I to challenge this?

I decided i will build two simultaneously , the Hasa A-4 and the Arii A-8. Please put me down for these

Was tempted to do the torpedo A-5 but thought the White Russian scheme for the A-4 appealed to me

The Arii is an old kit, very simple with less than 30 parts, but has a good feel, the detail and quality is more than acceptable. The decals look dodgey, and I am expecting a challenge with this one but theres not a lot to lose here, it cost me less than $10

Nathan, and everyone else, Here is the kit I picked up out of the clearance pile yesterday. Giving it a quick glance it does indeed appear to be a very nice kit.

Matt......I have a mix of feelings on this one. The Eduard is accurate and mine is turning out good for me but pay attention to the detail of putting it together. It's not a very forgiving kit for the unwary builder. I'll be going with a Tamiya D-9, even though it suffers from inaccuracies. This A-8R2 I'm building has definetely been a friggin workout!

Thanks for the heads up!  Another option that I am considering is the Hobby Boss Ta-152C1 (although I have looked at the torpedo that came with it and I will not be using that)  with EagleCals decals, perhaps in fictional markings fo JG 301 or some other JG.  Or another Eduard Fw-190 (not big tail), because the yellow tails and panels are really growing on me.
