My First Time Group Build

JOE, no problem, thanks for letting us know. I know life has a way of doing that now and again. Will hope for the best, still got 3 months to run, if not, hopefully we can see it another time.

Like I mentioned, hadn't made on in years so really wouldn't know the quality of Revell although I do recal any I'd made having more detail than it's comparative Airfix version. The chap who gave it to me also purchased an Airfix 1/48 Hurricane. Very disappointed that it didn't even have an engine...!

That surprises me that the engine can be displayed on a Revell kit. I guess they have changed with the times!

Folks I'll be continuing the Dauntless build with my son when I wrap things up on my Fw190 A8 over on the Butcher Bird build. Seeing some good work in here and thanks to Bish this GB has been ongoing. Will be peeping in from time to time to check on progress, Joe

Hi mustang....

Yeah it allows the engine to be displayed. A feature I really like. Same also with the open canopy (static, not hinged) which allows the cockpit details be seen also.

As for the paint... I didn't intend this to be in any way a serious build, moreso just dipping my toe back in the water....  so the paints are mostly paints I had from years ago. Wasn't too sure how they were looking whilst applying it as it seemed a bit tacky... gloopy almost, but with some thinning out it looked 'ok'. With the decals etc applied it looked a little better.  :)

I'm doing a 1/72 Revell Supermarine Stranraer at the minute and the EZ line is a godsend for the rigging....!!!!

Im liking the paint! Thats a good build for being out of the pattern for that long. Did that kit come with the parts to display the engine? I cant remember the Revellograms having that option. Oh and YES-- EZ line is the bomb! I use it on every bird I build that has an aerial. Again, nice build macman.

Not exactly my first build, but certainly my first in around 34 years....! A Christmas gift from a chap I work with, who shares my passion for all things airborne....!

Unfortunately Bish I have stalled out. Life has handed me other unforseen time committments that has limited my meager bench time to focusing on my Fw 190 for the Butcher Bird GB. My ability to complete my Draken remains, regrettably, uncertain at this time.

Right guys, time to give this a kick in the butt. As i seem to be on a quest to encourage GB membership, i can't let this one drop to far back. I know Mustang will be getting back to his build son. How are the rest doing.

Looks like you have your work cut out bud. I take it your planning on scribeing the panel lines. I tried that a few kits ago but abandoned it before i did more harm than good. So if you are doing that, i will be watching closely.

Finally broke sprue on mine last night. Nothing exciting, just cleaning up some parts. I have found some unexpected issues though. The kit has a surprising amount of detail, however, a lot of the pieces look poorly molded and need some significant work. For example, I don't remember many details about the SR, but I know it is supposed to be pointy, not round and bulbous as the engine inlets were:

This photo shows one inlet the way it came in the kit, and the other one after I filed it down to a point. This is the kind of problem I'm finding on a lot of the pieces. Looks like a lot of basic shaping work to start off, and probably some filling/sanding later.

Also, it has raised panel lines. I have never dealt with these before. I know it can be done, I just need to dig up the article about how to do it.

And now I also need to decide how I want to display it. Normally I buld my models "in flight" and hang them, but for this one I have a strange urge to not do that. So now what do I want to do with it? Canopies open or closed? Do I include the D-21 drone or not? (When we did this many years ago, it didn't have the drone. I don't remember if the kit had it then or not.) I'm actually considering doing a diorama, which I have never done before, and that will depend on if I can find decent photos of what I have in mind.

So anyway, right now it is my "at work" project, since I'm spending a lot of nights there in the foreseeable future. More later!

Nice job Chris, that looks good. I'll add yoiu to the completed list.

Turned out alright.  No decals and a simple paint scene, but still a fun build.

While I don't have the original build, I'm confident it turned out better then that one!

Dude......Chris. that doesn't look bad at all!! Good job. Sorry I've been so distant lately. Lots of out of town trips that I hadn't planned for last year so have been sticking close to the Butcher Bird build.. About to get on here within the next month or two to finish the build of my Dauntless. My son is hitting me up..................................... hard!! Thank the lord for spring baseball season for kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its nice to see you back sub. Ye, i know what you mean about the decals. I didn't have high hopes and wasn't disapointed. But it was fun to get the memories back.

I'm here! Just catching up on threads after my time away. I've been busting out my current build pretty nicely, and my build for this group is next in the cue.

Ken- Great work on the P38! The NMF is very convincing, and thanks for sharing how you did it! I have yet to brave an attempt at it, but I will keep your method in mind when I do.

Bish- Nice job on the Sabre! The biggest thing I notice is that the decals look... well, like they are from a 30 year old kit, so there's not much you can do about that. Other than that, looks good to me!

I guess that's part of the fun of this group build, to experience the "joy" of these older kits! Looking forward to whoever finishes next!

Just got to get the camera out and take some final photos of the batmobile.  It's done, just got to prove it.

Looks like we have let this lapse a bit, so much going on. Better get my fingure out, how are you guys getting on.

Thanks Ken. My builds have been improveing a lot and after the Stuka, i think i have set myself a pretty decent bench mark.

Its a shame he doesn't come as his work cpould very well inspire others. I know my models are at a pretty decent standard, but i also know there are a lot of people who are better. But as long as i am happy and i know i have done my best, thast all we can do.

I agree on the inspire part, and there are some great builds in our club. Same here, I think most of my builds are at the decent level myself. And like you I know quite a few who are better. However, as far as Im concrned, the reason for our club (Knox (PA) Scale Modelers) i not to see who's the best; it's more getting together just to talk modeling and make some new friends. And i'm sure all the others feel the same way.

i agree, We're not perfect even though we would like to think we are. In my local modling club. there is one guy that signed up for the club, but he's never come to our meetings. I'm told it's because no one can build a model as good as he can!

Deffinatly worth a try. They have a range of colours and i find them great for aircraft landing lights.

I can't say I have, I don't recall seeing it in the store - ill have a look though

Chris, have you tried Tamiya Clear colours.

I tried again to tint the turn signals, darker shade.

Another epic fail.

I'm just painting the dang things.

This is the third time i have used Alclad. Had a few issues the first time, the second was ok. But this is the first time i have had this problem. O well, more practice needed.
