Thanks Bish!

I'm still sorting out the resin bits, the seat supports were pretty tricky and delicate

test fitting some of the parts and its looking like I've got issues ahead, some of the side parts are not matching the contours of the bulkheads they attach to.

cossack

Gentlemen,

I am recent returner to the forums (time ran away with me!!).

I would also like to join this GB.  I started in a Beaufighter / Torbeau over the weekend - the Tamiya 1/48 MkX kit.  Only after markets will be some Coastal Command decals I picked up a while ago, as I aim to build the equipment flown either by the RNZAF or the NZ RAF squadrons of WWII.  So it is going to be done up as a 489 squadron aircraft.

Helo - like to watch how you go on the Caribou.  I am a volunteer at HARS (www.hars.org.au), so if you need any detail photos, let me know ... "Beauty" and "Beast" are both in our care down at Albion Park, and so I cna climb all over them to get photos for you.  Sorry, though - they are not in your camo scheme :)

Paul

Hi Paul , I certainly admire you for giving up a lot of your spare time to volunteer for HARS . It would be great if you had some cockpit photo's of the Caribou you could share . I'm particulary interested in how deep is the step down from the cockpit floor to the cabin floor as I'm not sure as to where to position my piece of sheet plastic I cut for the cabin/cargo floor area ?

Kind regards ,

John .

Trey, the build of my B-17 is buried somewhere in the 1/48 B-17 Group Build that's floating around in the aircraft section (cs.finescale.com/.../105108.aspx).

IIRC correctly those side panels didn't fit all to well for me either, so I left them off and used an Eduard update set, among other things, that updates the kit's sidewalls. Oh yeah, test fit that cockpit floor in your fuselodge before doing anything on it. I had one h-e-double hockey sticks of a time getting it in. Lots of sanding on both the resin parts and fuselodge

John,

Heading down tomorrow ... so will take the camera for you, and get you some shots.  Want them posted here in the forum?

And I don't mind volunteering down there ... working in 1:1 scale has its rewards.

Two or three pic's of the cockpit and storage racks should do the trick Paul .

And one of the step from the cabin floor up to the cockpit and perhaps if possible the rear ramp .

In any case , I will most gratefull of whatever pic's you can post and I'm a little envious of you being around a 1:1 scale "Boo" ...........Modelers heaven !

B-17Pilot thanks for the tips and link! I'm dreading fitting these resin bits in and if I ca'nt get the sides to fit I'm leaving them off as well. I have a huge problem now looking at the waist gunners positions, they appear to be wrong for the 'G' and should be staggered? If so whats the fix or is there another kit out there that has them molded staggered already?thanks in advance Trey

That's right. The early 'G's had the waists across from each other. Then in the middle of production they switched to staggered waists. So it boils down to the particular aircraft you are modeling, does it have staggered waist positions or not? There is no kit in 1/48 that has them staggered, you will have to scratch a new one and plug the old one in order to get staggered waists, but you can use the window piece as a template for the hole and plug. The newer 1/72 scale kits give you an option of staggered or not

John,

Hope these help.  Sorry for the light - I had to work flat, cos the battery on my camera was getting low!

I didn't get the ramps - they were both closed up today.

Hope these help:

Let me know if there is anything else you might want :)

B17Pilot thanks for the info on the waist guns, still researching to find what production run this airframe was and I'm so hoping its an early one!

Theuns looks like its got some really good panel line detail for that scale ,looking forward to seeing the next update

Painfully slow progress with the resin parts. They required a fair amount of cleaning and a lot of thinning, still the fit is going to be tricky from the looks of things. I'll start removing the molded details next and hope the fit is decent enough .

Yes the detail on this tiny model is superb, just such a pitty I went and "missplaced" the darn cockpit glazing! :-(

It is on hold till I get a new one.

No turning back now!

Quick question, the resin parts for the cockpit sides have a canvas look to them, did this cover the exposed stringer detail on the G or is this in error? The parts for the sides are aft of the floor next to the seat rails in the pic

Jon,

Nice looking pilots!!  I have given up putting them in mine - I just don't seem to be able to keep my hand steady enough to do a good job :(

Paul,

I do alot of the pilot detail work with a tooth pick instead of a brush, it takes a bit of time but the result is worth it :)

Jon like the open gun bay detail. The pilot detail does indeed look worth the effort, nice job.

Very slow going on the interior. The resin parts are thick and need to thinned quite a bit to get them to flex enough to fit the curve of the fuselage without breaking. They also do'nt quite line up perfectly so its even more aggravating trying to get all the components to align properly. There are some small gaps that will need tending to but nothing major.

Bish thanks!

I'm using the resin IP with the Eduard color instruments so I had to sand flush the details on the resin to get it to lay flat. No easy task getting it level without destroying the lip at the top. Still need to add the throttle assy and some fiddly bits.

Bish yes the Eduard stuff is top shelf,ca'nt say the same about this True details resin set tho. The last True detail interior I used in another build fit great so they all are'nt bad.

The seat assembly went together nicely.

Delicate work removing resin from the control yoke

The IP test fit looks good on the floor but not in the fuselage, going to be some filling and remaking stringer detail to make up the gap

The Pilot side wall detail parts are ill fitting and need a lot of careful sanding on both the fuselage interior and the resin part itself. I wound up trimming off the back section behind the O2 bottle mounts to get the final fit. The other side panels that go behind those do'nt fit at all and the starboard part is molded in reverse. If you flip it around so the detail wo'nt be seen you could get it to fit,as this is pointless they wo'nt be used . Here is the one side in place after a day long struggle of constant sanding test fitting and some rather colorful language.

Wow. Trey, Great dry-brushing technique and I appreciate your patience with the resin. I'm stepping back from resin myself for a while. The fitting piece if just too painful for me, especially with side panels, and full cockpit sets. Looking really good!

WOW Trey, you're coming along nicely! Before getting to far, test fit the floors of that resin set between the fuselodge, that's where I had the biggest issue. you're braver than I, I left those side panels off on mine.

Jon- That twin pony is looking great! Makes me want to resume the fight I have with my 48 scale one, then I look at it and say not right now.
