Well, here I am. Still sleepless in Denver. A week out from my injuries and it feels like so much longer. I am unable to sleep in the bed, and I have sleep, fitfully, sitting up in a chair. I am very angry about it as the rack I tripped over should not have been where it was. It was obviously a trip hazard, but it seemed the area got cleaned up very quickly after I fell, so what can I do?

In the meantime, I did sit with the Tiger. I applied the base and the darker tan for some of the camo. The few photos I could find, mostly of the finished model, plus the box art, showed the pattern to be very subtle, so that's how I went. There is also some green to be applied, then I can worry about things like many of the molded on detail. I had to use artistic license across the top as the color guide only showed front, back and sides.

Nice job Jim!  It is looking great.

I am very sorry to hear about your plight.  Can you get your doctor to at least give you some pain medicine so that you can get comfortable enough to sleep in bed?  You are not going to heal very fast without sleep!

Jim: I wouldn't worry too much about the camo. Sorry if I'm going over stuff you already know here!

German tanks came from the factory in the sandy yellow mustard scheme. The crews were provided with small cans of concentrated green, brown, and sand yellow paint and a air gun to apply the camo to fit their surroundings - aka if fighting in a forest use a lot of green, if in a desolate region use more brown. The paint had instructions on how much to thin them but the crews generally went with the 'eyeball' method so sometimes the green and brown paint would be really dark if thinned a little or very pale and washed out like you did here if they thinned it a lot. Sometimes if they didn't have any paint thinner the crews would use gasoline or water, which made the paint go on differently too. There were no hard and fast rules on how to apply the paint either, some crews went with long meandering lines, some large blotches, others polka dots, some weird 'Picasso' like schemes.

You literally cannot go wrong with German camo unless you're replicating a specific vehicle!

I hope you feel better soon, I've never been in a situation like yours but I have had a cold so that I couldn't lie down for my sinuses draining. After a day or so of not being able to lie down and sleep I really felt like krap warmed over.

Thanks Cliff for the information.  It is always cool to learn about the details about stuff like that!  Geeked

Well, I`m finally getting around to posting a few WIP pics of my M48A3 Patton. I`ve been doing a little bit of work every night for a few weeks and this is where it stands for now....

I painted the entire tank Tamiya Olive Drab, which seemed way too dark to me....so I lightened it a bit by adding some yellow.

Forgot to mention that this is my 2nd armor kit ever...1st one was a T-34-85 that I built 13 yrs ago...lol.

I always wanted to try a dot filter, so I gave it a shot...came out decent but need alot more practice. I used some artist oils...red, orange, lt green and blue. I also shot some of the lighter drab into the center sections and high spots to simulate fading.

Above picture shows the dot filter results...want to go at it some more but the voices in my head are screaming  "NOOOOOOO!!"

That`s about it so far, comments are welcome!

Thanks for looking,

Ken, I appreciate your concern.

My problem is complicated by the fact that when on my back, I snore. So bad that it disrupts my sleep- Doctors have discussed the possibility of doing a sleep study to see if I suffer from a form of apnea. The only way I can sleep is on my side which prevents the soft tissues of my throat from relaxing back into my airway and causing the snoring. Being on my side is the problem now that it puts pressure on the rib cage and is very painful- to the point that it sort of overwhelms the pain medication and is unbearable. The least painful thing is being on my back, but then we are back to the sleep disorder....all this is aggravated by my age and my weight as well.

Dr is well aware of this and the only short term solution is sleeping sitting up (get used to it for now, he said)-which I don't find very restful. The last time I suffered from a rib injury it was only on my right side, and I could find a position that was 'manageable' though still painful. With my injuries being to both sides, I'm just up a certain bad-smelling creek and no paddle....

Thanks again, but I'm sure I'll get through all this eventually....  ( wishing for Sleep Sleep )

P.S. Troublemaker, nice work. I have yet to try dot filtering and all that.

It's amazing that my work area is so like yours, right down to the tooth picks, Q-tips, bits of tape, sanding sticks, paint bottles and other debris! We could almost be brothers!

On my workbench now:

It's all about classic cars now!

Why can't I find the "Any" key on my keyboard?

That makes sense now.  I have sleep apnea as well.  I have to use a CPAP machine when I sleep.  I keep trying to lose weight in the hopes that I can stop using it.  I have yet to lose the weight and keep it off.  But I keep trying.  It has been a battle my entire life.

Jim: Ouch that does sound like a pain in the butt, hope you feel better soon. As said there's not much you can do when you can't get enough sleep, I get really grumpy and ill-tempered.

Len: Looks good to me! I'm starting to experiment with the filters and stuff, the yellow does a good job of breaking up the solid OD green.

Len, really like the dot filter effects. The look is so realistic I think because of its subtlety. I will eventually work up the courage to try it myself!

Jim, as someone with an ongoing back condition, i.e., spinal stenosis, L5 S1 disc bulge, I know how frustrating it is to miss out on sleep. My doc has me on zanaflex and lortab which are life savers as I would get very little sleep without them. I've also had success with ambien in the past but the problem with all these is risk of dependency however when used as directed I feel they're worth it.

Hi Everyone,

I am sitting here now waiting for a server to complete a task.  (Yes, I am working late this evening, again!)

My picture frames arrived today for those lithographs so I will be attempting to repair them this weekend.  I am also planning on buttoning up the fuselage on the Phantom this weekend.

So what is everybody else up to this weekend?

Bummer, Ken.

Hope you won't be stuck there much longer. I'll be cleaning up around the house this weekend. One of my sons and his family are coming to stay with us for a couple of weeks.

Cheers,

Russ

Hi Everyone,

Well the sounds of 4th of July are already here in my neighborhood!

I am finally sitting down for the evening.  I will sleep in tomorrow and try to catch up on much needed sleep.  Then I will try to tackle my projects.

Well, this is the first night I have been awake beyond 10 pm. Today, although still plenty sore, I feel almost human. I think I might just live through this after all. I'm sure I could wake in the morning back where I was. Still confined to sitting up to sleep and I think I'm getting a bit more used to it and getting a bit more rest. I still long for settling down in the bed. Soon perhaps.

Just had some storms blow through here, with plenty of wind, rain. hail, lightning and thunder. They were pretty intense and I was almost expecting plagues of frogs, locusts and the rivers to run with blood to follow.

Some work finally at the workbench. I tossed away the painting guide and just had a go at some free hand:

I want to add more of the dark tan, I think.

It was a tough shoot with the green as my bottle had turned to rubbery goo. I found I had another and it was very thick and had to be run the strainer as it had many air-brush clogging lumps in it. It took quite a bit of thinner to get to where it would spray. As it was, I had a bit of splatter issue in the back that I will have touch up. before I got enough thinner to make it spray decently. That bottle went to the trash can as well when I was done. Gives me an excuse to visit the hobby shop in any case.

Thanks Dom! I have to do it all again anyway...forgot to decal 1st but they`re all on now. I sprayed it with a flat coat, did a pinwash and highlighted edges with a silver Prisma pencil. I`m planning on re-doing the dot filter plus some more washes and weathering with powders. Have to find a few reference pics so I have an idea how to weather the wheels and tracks.

More pics soon...thanks!

Hi Everyone!

Russ, let me start off with just saying you are a genius!

Your idea to use the steam iron on those lithographs worked great!  Here are the before pictures:

This may look like the same one again but it is a second ding:

 And here is the corner:

Well I don't know what happened to my last post, (over 2/3 of it is missing), so I will do it again!  Yeah

Here is the dinged up corner:

All six lithographs have identical dings and bends in the exact same place since they were rolled up together before the guy did what ever he did to put the dings and bends into them.

I used a heavy cotton cloth and laid it over the area with the ding.  Then with the steam iron on the lowest setting that would produce steam, I pressed it on the area rubbing it back and forth for about 15 seconds.  Here is how the dings look now (in the same order shown above):

The dings and bends are practically gone!  Thank you Russ for that great idea!

After fixing all six lithographs I mounted them in their frames.  Some of the frames weren't exactly 22" X 17" so I had to trim a small hair off to make them fit.  It ended up taking all afternoon to fix and mount the lithographs in their frames.  But they look beautiful!

I will take pictures when I have them hanging on the wall.

BTW, I've had the same problem with 1 or 2 of the last images in a post not showing up. Seems to be a random occurrence though.

What a day! A follow up visit to the clinic brings mixed news. My rib injuries seem to be progressing fine, though it will still be weeks to recover. The down side: an examination and new x-rays reveal that I very possibly have a fracture in my wrist! They are going to send me to a hand specialist who will make the final determination. I could possibly end up in a cast! Lightning Censored

You can find some basic history about any aircraft from the USAF based on year and serial number.  Kind of neat!

Well, I just had an impulse and decided that I wasn't going to use the option of the spare tracks mounted to the sides of the turret. The kit instructions have this version with out them. So it meant cutting and sanding with repainting to follow. I also managed to break off the lift ring on one side, so a repair will need to be made. The kit did have spares though.

Hi Jim,

Glad to hear your ribs are getting better!  Sad to hear about your wrist!  But it is something you don't want to screw around with.  Hopefully it won't be too long in the cast if you do end up in one.
