Here's the next update on the S27 Ferrari F186.
You can see here where I filled the screw holes in the chassis with plastic rod and CA.

The chassis has been sprayed black, and the cockpit interior assembled and mounted to it. You might see a small area of unpainted resin immediately next to the cockpit side walls, this is where I masked off the chassis to allow a reasin to resin join, rather than having paint there. The rather thick resin body will sit directly on top of it, so it won't be visible at all.

I've all but completed the clean up of the body, this is a curbside (Kerbside ?) so I won't be cutting off the engine cover.

You can see where the chassis will fit in. I will have to fill the gap and respray that part of it once it's all put together.
The fit of this white metal strut and insert into the locating recess on the body was very poor. I would have preferred to fit it after spraying and finishing the body, but I've had to blend it in. I guess I'll just mask and spray it later.

Finally, the recess for the air intake is about 1.5mm deep. I can use a motor tool to hollow it out, but how deep, and I've always had a hard time getting a smooth finish inside the hole. I've also never done it in resin.

The next steps are to fit and blend in the etched vent cover on the sidepods, and to build up the new front wing fitting, as I'm not using the S27 parts.
Hope you enjoy, cheers for now,
Tony

That looks really good Dogfish. It really is loooong isn't it ?

Sorry about the lack of updates from my end. I've been busy cleaning up the resin body for the Ferrari F186. I'll post a picture once it's done, it's not too far away now, but has been a little time consuming.

Cheers

Nice work Dogfish.

I finally finished my real truck (control arm bushings, ball joints tie rods etc), so I am hoping to finish the Nova this weekend. I'm starting to have withdrawals hehehehehe.

So many fine builds going on here! Finished putting the chassis to gether and decided to add another coat of paint to represent this more.

Now I'll wet sand this down to make it look weathered.

Thanks Wildchild.

I've managed to clean up and spray the chassis on the Ferrari F186. It doesn't seem like much, but it's quite a milestone as I can build it up from there.

Will post some pics when I get a chance, but it's just black.

Cheers

It's a pretty bone-jarring ride, especially in an unlimited mod car like this. They run cars with this much steel around here, and a guy broke his leg a few years ago because he braced it against the firewall. Normally, it's not a problem because the car bends/dents/buckles to absorb the impact. In these, not so much. They were bringing imperials in that weighed almost 8000lbs, the heaviest car ever run was a 65 suicide door Lincoln, weighed a shade under 9000lbs, but all the steel you want to put into it doesent matter: an imperial is a stronger car to start with lol. They run full-size pickups that way too.

Thanks guys! It works pretty good, but I need to find some a tad thicker, as thin as this is it doesent take much to over-bend and tear it unrealistically bad.

Greg that dash looks choice! Glad to see the parts arrived!

Tony I like the way the belts look. And never heard of using flour before, nice tip!

Wildchild thats some serious intense building,I too like the aluminum can technique.

That is an enormous amount of work, WIldchild. I can't imagine what it would be like to be in a car whilst it takes all those hits. I am fascinated by your use of aluminium cans to make body panels, and the process to give them the creased and dented look. I like the hauler, and the tools too. Really tells a story.

here's a little more in depth look at my 77x car.

i began the rebuild by scrubbing my previous attempt at weathering away to reveal the paint: thick, semi-gloss black. i knew that the paint was going to keep me from "denting" the body with the lighter method anymore, so i sat back, started thinking as i began to strip paint. i was thinking of photoetch for some reason, and i thought "i can made my own photoetch... with aluminum".

i experimented with the other car first, with promising results. so i sprayed some primer, and made more body panels. i bent the frame up more, and tailored the panels to fit by bending them with the frame

this was the original motor i was going to use, the 383 stroker that comes in the revell special edition 69 nova. i was going to use it with upright headers, but felt i needed something with a little more kick.

ill post more later, having trouble with photobucket at the moment.

Regards, Logan

this is to be the hauler for 2 cars/trucks(in the future) at a time. the tractor is a pete 359 conventional (revell) and a Fruehauf 40' flatbed trailer (amt)ive added some of the pit essentials for a derby team to the trailer (chains, jack, cutting torch, misc tools, etc.) oil stained the deck, went for the black-for-chrome look on everything, im not much of a chrome guy.

pretty much how it sits right now, added the brushguard to the tractor, but thats about it.

this will be the second car, "17T". ford motor, leaf springs, the whole 9 yards. this is a complete rebuild as well.

it was originally going to be a second car with my number, 77x, but i started making it into an unlimited mod car, so it needed a new face to match a new body. enjoy everybody.

trimming down....

... and shaping up

i had to use some wire to hold the panels onto the body while the superglue dried. i also have the ''floor'' in the trunk as well in this picture. i know it doesent look stock, but on a car like this, odds are good that it could be anything from 1/2'' plate steel to just sledged and crimped floor panels. if itll add strength, we'd put it in.

initial rear bends and folds, and first folds of the trunk.

i used cut alteration pins for the 1/2'' or 3/4'' threaded rod. i just have to add "nuts" and the plate washers.

i needed to think of a unique roof sign. a friend of mine is a big ford guy, and i had already added a mopar motor into a chevy derby car... so the chevy guys couldnt be any more upset if there was a ford motor in a chevy derby car lol. everybody has square or rectangular roof signs, so im going to make one a little different. i will be making this out of brass and styrene.

initial fitting of the motor. i believe its a 302, but im not sure.

first fresh paint since the rebuild started

wired the motor after base paint scheme...

the new look. all of the vehicles built as part of the ''team'' will all have similar paint: black and blue with white trim. numbers will vary.

it still needs alot of work, but this is how she sits right now.

Excellent Greg. I like your dash. Timely arrival of the parts.

Here's the latet on the Ferrari F186.

Thanks Jake. I really liked your F2001B. Great job. You've sold me on it.

I've just done the seat, used plain flour (I didn't want it to 'rise') to make the seat fluffy, and Tamiya grade up harnesses. I'm not sure that they're the answer I'm looking for, but they'll do for this one. I gave them a coat of flat varnish which improved the realism a little.

The S27 harnesses were etched stainless steel, and were very 'springy'. No chance of getting them to lay down realistically.

I've gone for a rather messy look, like Johanssen has just done a lap in Thursday Free Practice.

Cheers

On another note, I keep getting hit with set backs on my build.  First the gear shift broke off the steering column while I was installing it on the dash.  To complicate matters, after de-chroming the 4-wheel drive shifter, it went down the drain in the rinse process! Bang Head  Now to wait to see it Revell customer service will fulfill my parts request.

HEY!  Guess what arrived today.....

Just when I was about to head to Hobbyland to get another GMC, and it contained.....

Which is great, because I'm at the stage where I want to finish up the interior.  Here's what the dashboard looks like currently...

I'll be removing the installed steering column and replacing it with the newly arrived part. Big Smile

Y'all have some great builds! I've really enjoyed seeing them. As for mine, I'm stuck in that good ol' modeler's block, and pretty much all of my sessions are about five minutes of looking at it, wondering what I'm going to do to it, then walking away without any work being done. Hopefully, it'll break soon.

That Merc is absolutely striking Trey. The color scheme is stunning, and the work is immaculate. The white wall tyre really sets it all off. Well done to you for an outstanding model, and contribution to this GB.

I've used the first photo in the build roster, as it shows the engine too. Let me know if you want to change it.

Cheers

Latest update on the Ferrari F186.

I've done the dashboard and steering wheel.

Removed and scratchbuilt a new screen with the screen decal from a Fujimi kit. The steering wheel only has three photo etched nuts added to it, and a slight variation on the decal to seperate the prancing horse and the MOMO logo.
I thought my work look pretty good until I photographed it. I'm sure it shows up more than what is actually visible to the naked eye.

WildChild - That is an enormous piece of work. THank you for the description of the work so far, I now have a far better appreciation of the thought and effort that goes into building a model like this. I'll look forward to your next update.
