Well I sprayed both the Kugelblitz and the Wirbelwind tonight. Both look a bit like they need some weathering, but at least I got some color modulation in. I'll start the weathering process after painting the roadwheels tomorrow.

For the Kugelblitz, since there are no existing photos, I've just given it the very late war base coat of dark green, but in about six different shades to start of the light and shade effect.

I was getting a bit tired by the time I sprayed the camo on the Wirbelwind, I might have a look at it again tomorrow and make a decision whether to reload the airbrush and touch it up a bit.

I have Dragon's Kugel and was going to basecoat it in Olivgrun, too.

Shiv - Great work on the Momsen. Doing that 1/700 PE is like knitting with spiderwebs, isn't it?

Tony - Your panzer twins are shaping up beautifully. I think the Wirbelwind's camouflage looks just fine.

More progress. The road wheels are all painted on both the Wirbelwind and Kubelblitz, the tracks are done on the Kubelblitz and the upper and lower hulls are joined, as well as spare track links and road wheels.

Jibber, I am afraid the /20 wouldn't fit this GB. It wasn't a search light, it was an IR light for use with IR equipped AFV's for fighting at night. There is the Halftrack GB I am starting in March that you could save it for. I would love to see it built as I have the same kit myself amongst my collection of 251's.

Bish I realize that but it was a searchlight for aircraft, if the infrared lens is not installed won't it still be an aircraft searchlight or was it strictly used on the field in infrared? I wasn't sure of that. Just trying to clear some shelf space....

It only came into service at the very end of the war, and its sole role was as an IR light. I now what you mean about removing the lens, but I certainly have not read of it being used in such a way. I imagine its use as an IR light would be much to important to use it in a searchlight role. With the IR cover on, the light can't be seen. take it off, and the vehicle becomes a target. And the main threat to Armoured formations would be low level ground attack aircraft. And these couldn't operate at night in the same way that high level bombers could, and if they did, a search light would be no good.

Most certainly. We already have one in 48th, but theres plenty of room for another. Is it the Tamiya kit or Dragon.

I haven't picked it up yet,  I like the Tamiya kits but also the challenge of the Dragon Smart Kit. I'll let you know. Thanks, sorry about the UHU.

No worries on the UHU, it will defiantly be welcome in the halftrack GB. I am a big fan of the 251, I am trying to get every variant, so I would defiantly like to see that built.

Those Dragon kits are certainly a challenge, but which ever kit you chose, I know you will have fun with it.

Thanks Greg. That site is great, I'll have to sit down and read it. I read before that spielburg's movie 1941 idea came from this. What about the model kits of the lights? Are there none being made?

Don't recall having ever seen anything other than the German ones you mentioned. Curious. There might be something usable in the model railroad world, but that would limit your scale options somewhat. (And probably not be quite as accurate as you're looking for.) Scratchbuilding may be your only path.

Saw Spielberg's 1941 when it came out. A horrible film in oh so many ways, but much of it great fun.

The only search light kit I am aware of is a German one, the same goes for radar. Seems to be an area that's rather neglected.

Bish, again I see that we have a Wirbelwind in 1/48, so let's go with Flak43 Flakpanzer IV Ostwind by Dragon in 1/35. It's not unlike the Wirbelwind but a different model, thanks.

BTW, my Tiger #131 is almost completed, working on the decals. Your pic of the 131was a big help, I've tried to copy it as best I could. I wished I would have had it before painting, but my camo pattern is very close.

I think Tony bis planning on doing all the Pz IV Flak vehicles, including the Ostwind. But it doesn't matter if we have more than one. I am still down for the Mobelwagen, and he is doing one of those as well.

I've built the Italeri Ostwind, but would also like to get the dragon kit as that's a production vehicle. So I hope you are still going to build it.

what is the german flak vehicle that is tracked with an 88mm and large folding sides? i think a kit came out a few months back

Will do, The Dragon Smart Kit Ostwind it is. It's been on my "to do" list.

wayne, is that the one based on a Panther hull. I think I know the kit you mean, but I can't find it anywhere.

it looks like it could be based on the PANTHER suspension system but is a really low hull, basically a flat platform on top of tracks.
