i'm in with the 1.24 Revell MERCEDES BENZ UNIMOG U 1300L THW (Technische HilfsWerk)

The Technische Hilfswerk is the Federal German civil protection organisation, operated by over 80,000 volunteers and about 800 workers in the head office. With technical knowledge and specialist equipment the THW is a competent partner for the fire brigades, police and other aid organisations in Germany, Europe and throughout the world.

This is my first 1/24 truck and looks like a larger version of the 1/35 UNIMOG ( that i did in UN white). I mean the instructions are identical which means ugly windshiled mounting nubs, canvas and side panels are 1 piece and no cargo interior and no oening hood to see the engine. i may rebuild the entire cargo area using tissue paper for the canvas and add an interior if i can find some pics. given their purpose i could probably do anything in the cargo bed and justifiy it including building a hard shell. goo practice for the 5 firetrucks (including the big ass (47cm or  18" long) 8x8 airport one that just came in)

i will be looking for tips (especially painting tips from you car guys) as i build military wheels (lots of warwheels) and my civilian builds will have a gloss or semi gloss finish and fairly clean and unweathered appearaqnce.

Sounds like an interesting subject, never even heard of it,  very cool.

Waynec and Fantacmet, I've added your Unimog and Mini to the Build Roster. I must say that I find both subject intriguing. I think the Mini with an Irish flag will look really cool. I'm also excited about the Unimog, it's a really different and interesting subject, and a new direction for this GB.

next up is the C1 metalizer!

and here it is, not too bad. the rest should be done tomorrow, it doesnt take long. you just have to make sure it only goes where you want it , cos once its on somewhere you dont want it , it wants to stay there!!

That DOES look good Talentless. How do you apply the C1 powder ? I might have to give it a go.

comes in a kit with  mask, gloves, buffing pads and makeup pad. it couldnt be easier. just rub it in with the makeup applicator and buff it up. it gets everywhere if you are not careful, use the minimum amount and the pot will last for ever.

the finger prints just buff out no probs, but i handle it with clean paper towels.

Builds are looking great. We're supposed to have some warm weather tomorrow finally so I'm hoping to start painting the 40 Ford.

Hi taxtp, I was wondering if I could join the roster? I'd like to build the Monogram 1:24 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C. Nothing too exciting I know, but I do love Cobras.

I'd like to join this build with two kits, a Revell Fireball Roberts '57 Ford and a Tamiya LaFerrari.

Welcome aboard Raven and Ken. I've actually built that Monogram 427 Cobra, it's quite a nice kit. It'll be great to see the new LaFerrari, and the Fireball Roberts kit is one I haven't seen either.

here is the box art for the UNIMOG. looked thru the instructions and the chassis is identical to the 1/35. some differences and 3 different versions up top. tarp ropes look good enough i am not going to rebuild the cargo bed but i may throw some large crates in the back to hide the connector tabs. i suspect i will be adding a sun shade to hide the upper windshield attachment tabs. thinking about adding real lights but that is iffy unless i buy a second one.

My side, engine mounted, and done the dreaded masking. Added first layer of red, so will hope for the best. Yes, I did remember the insides of the vents... but i just KNOW there will be some obscure place the red will come through...

Yeah, PITA, royal or not, it was... :( In the end, I'll take the results. Engine cover went well, front went well and only seepage occurred around cockpit surrounds, see pics below. With all the complex curves and inlets and all... I'll take it. Now have to figure out something regarding the seepage marks, but will come up with something.

Probably best just to respray the silver over those bits. You could try scraping it with a cocktail stick but i imagine the coloured paint is a lot tougher than the silver and it will just damage it. Looks damn good apart from that tho.

hobby design supply some seatbelt hardware. i didnt have any material so it was out with the tamiya tape and flat red.

cuet little belt bits. 'scuse the dust but it was too late at night for the airbrush to blow it off.

nearly there. just need to fit all the bodywork.

the front screen went in ok

the rear one was a pain. i has to virtually remove the two lower location tabs from the screen to get it in

on the plus side, tamiyas clear parts are beautiful. clear thin  no distortion and shiney . the only way to see a finish like this is in natural light so....

well its done. took some quick pics but most were ruined by DUST grr. when its not peeing down i will try to get some in daylight without the dust.

Absolutely stunning piece John. This is one of the best metallic finishes that I've seen, and the quality of detail work is excellent.

Would you prefer I use one of these for the completed photo, or wait for the daylight photos ?

taxtp - would you mind waiting until i can take some other pics?ill try to leave room in the pic for the writing too it will not be until next week (i have a kitchen being installed this week and its chaos) whether they turn out any better we will see.

Hey Fellas.  I've just completed my entry for the Mustang Vs. Corvette GB and wanted to get started on my next GB project.

I'm going to be doing (I've already started it) the 1975 Chevy Rescue Van from AMT, I believe this is a re-release with retro box art -it's the one that just recently came out (Jan '14).  I'm going to try to do a mock delivery van of the company I own.  We don't actually have a delivery van so it should be fairly easy. 

I bit off a lot more than I was able to chew with the Vette project so I'm going for simple this time.  I am going to attempt making my own decals for it but that's it.  No new challenges for me this time, just plastic, glue, paint and decals.
