Wow, knew a lot of people my age with LPs and cassettes but never really started collecting music here till CDs came out. Took me over a month to figure out the MP3 player on my car, still not sure totally sure I understand them completely.

My LP collection is smaller than my CD collection, but my LP collection is a fair size.  I have some LPs that probably will never be put on a CD.  I have recorded some of them onto CDs.

I hear that! I just wanted to hear some of the albums I brought from Mom's. My table was at the high-end of the consumer line of direct drive turntables. The platter on the thing is turned aluminum and weighs something around 3 or 4 pounds! What a difference in technologies when we argued about direct drive vs. belt, moving magnet vs. moving coil, straight vs.curved tone arms. This things speed is controlled by a phase-locked loop circuit, and the funny thing is, I don't know what that means now any more that I did when I bought it. It just worked! I didn't want to worry about belts, speed adjustments and so on. Technics was my "thing" back then and shopped accordingly. The old Technics AV receiver quit a while back and the new Pioneer unit had no jacks for phonograph input. Hence, why I had to get a pre-amp. Funny how all that stuff from the 70's is gone now, but the turntable is still kicking!  I did have to replace the cartridge a while back as the old one went bad on one side. It's a cheapie as well, for about 50 bucks. Just needs to work.

Jim

PS. Yes, I still have a VCR, but not sure if it even works anymore.

PSS. But no 8-track! Never had one!

My turntable is not that fancy.  It is a belt drive.  I have replaced the belt at least a couple of times. I bought it originally at the same time that I bought the rest of the stereo system when I first moved out of my parent's house.  So my budget was a little limited.

Hello gang! Welcome to Nostalgia Sunday! I dusted off the old turntable:

Installed the phono preamp I sent away for a while back, and sitting here listening to one of Mom's......

...excuse me while I go turn the record over...

....Patsy Cline records. Nice sound, but the records are in horrible shape with a ton of static and scratches!

Now on to some Hank Williams... My friends would think I'm nuts!

If I'm crazy, check out this web site:

http://www.needledoctor.com/

There you can buy a turntable for $170,000 and MC (moving coil) phono cartridge for $15,000! The latter is mounted on 24K gold with gold windings on the coils! There is a huge vinyl following out there!

On the other side of nostalgia, I have decided I love my Smart TV and the 25" tube TV has to go to Best Buy for recycling! Some old technology can go. I just have to find the time to read the 277 page instruction manual on the new set.....Tongue Tied

Jim

Hi Jim,

Very cool turntable there!

I still have my old Pioneer table that I bought back in the late 70's!

I did install a high dollar needle/cartridge for it not too long ago.  But truthfully, I rarely play albums on it.  It is so much easier to use my computer or CD player for tunes.

Thanks for the info Jim. I had not realised that meng had been around that long.

I don't know about the Meng Model company itself, how long it's been around. The 102 was released in 2012, I believe.

It's been around for a couple of years.I just don't think it attracted a whole lot of attention. They followed it up with a "case xx" version. (read that as "case 10 or case 20") The wing shapes were different on the two versions, but I'm not sure exactly what.

  Jim

Hi Jim,

The main difference between the Case X and Case XX wings was the leading edge.  On the Case X wings, the leading edge was basically straight, flat and even with the rest of the wing.  On the Case XX wings, the leading edge curled downward, which improved trim drag, increased service ceiling and improved low speed handling and stability.

Ken

Thanks for the info Ken! When I looked it up on the web, all I got was techno-babble. I also thought I read that there were some upgrades to some of the avionics as well?

When I get ready to start this kit, it means I will be forced to visit the Wings Over The Rockies Museum again! There is a 102 on display there. They used to have a 106 as well, but it got sent elsewhere.

Rob S.

I did the Case XX version for the Century Series GB. It was an excellent kit. Very well engineered. The engraved panel lines were a bit deep, but, overall It went together great. I did mine in the standard grey scheme, but, the Case XX kit has the decals included for Vietnam.

This version also includes marking for a SEA unit, the 497th.

I understand the 102's were pretty ineffective there as they were better suited for intercepting long range Soviet bombers as they were intended for.

These makings are confusing as they say "1970" and according to wikipedia, they only flew the Daggers from 60-64, and afterwards flew Phantoms....

Pretty cool Dave, Scotty and Bones have always been my favorite characters on the series too. I watched though The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine but lost interest in show with Voyager and Enterprise. And those remake movies by Abrams were some of the worst films I think ever made, I swear the Star Wars prequels may have been slightly better movies.

I never got to see ST when it was first broadcast as the parents controlled the set. There was no way we would ever watch programs that were not "real" and too "weird". I had to wait until it came out in syndication to see it.

I didn't like TNG when it came out, but it eventually grew on me.

DS9 I followed for a while - my favorite character was Odo. He slept in a bucket in his office.

Voyager for a bit, but lost interest, and Enterprise I never watched even one episode.

Another new addition here:

I had to choose the "case X" version as it was all they had at the LHS. A detail kit has to come all the way from my supplier down under.

This one could join either the Vietnam build and the Century Series group build

Also a bit of painting here: The F-8

Nice work there. Is that a new meng kit, not come across that one before.

Thanks guys. For some reason I keep missing the new posts on here, I was wondering why it had got so quiet. I guess the site has been so busy, its hard to keep track of everything.

Jim, really like the look of that canopy. I was going to have a try at dipping the 16 canopy in future, I have never tried that before. Looking at that result, I must get to it. I don't think I have ever seen that Star Trek episode, do you recall what it was called.

I got the pit fitted today and will post some pic slater. Just need to get the wings attached.

I have to admit to being a bit of a "Trekkie" though I never went so far as to attend conventions or anything like that.

The original pilot was titled "The Cage" and was later incorporated into the two part episode "The Menagerie", where Spock was being court marshaled. Leonard Nemoy and Majal Barret (Mrs. Gene Roddenberry, Nurse Chapel, Lwaxana Troy, and the voice of the computer in every series) were the only two actors from the series that had a role in the original pilot.

Jim

No, I have never been to conventions or any of that, or learnt Klingon for that matter.

Of course, the cage, how could I forget that. Thanks for the reminder.

Actually I don't much has been posted here recently Bish- most of us are trying to keep warm!

Nice work on your F-16, did you already cement the landing gear on? I'd be terrified I'd knock them off while painting.

Thanks. Ye, in this case I did. They had to be fitted for the piece that goes between the wheel wells to be fitted. And so I decided to add the front ones as well. And having them on does help in the painting. But so far so good.

Jim: That's funny, the original Trek was canceled a few months before I was born but my parents refused to take me to see Star Wars because it was a bunch of crazy space stuff! I think I was the only kid in elementary school that hadn't seen it, in fact I didn't get to see it until CBS ran it on TV in the early '80s.

That F-102 looks fantastic, I've been eyeing the 1/48th kit for awhile but have been trying to slow my stash from assuming hoarder like proportions by restricting myself to buying only stuff in my main fields of interest like WWII though Korea.

The gear bay on the F-8 looks incredible, that's a 1/72nd scale kit!?! Wow, that's some detail there.

Not to give away my age, but I would have been 8 when ST came out. An 8 y.o. would have loved to watch it!

I was 9 years old when it first aired. I remember watching it along with Lost in Space.  I also remember watching Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.

Nice work once again Jim!  On that masking job, did you cut lines into the tape for the hinged area?  If you did, how did you do that?

The F-102A would definitely qualify for my USAF Vietnam group build.  You could paint it ADC grey or SEA camouflage.  The USAF didn't start using the SEA camouflage until 1966.

Hey guys!

Like you all, have been battling the flu and the cold weather.  Despite the flu shot, I got two different types of the flu, obviously the strains not used for the basis of the vaccination!!  What a bummer!!

-Bish- your F-16 is looking great!

Jim and Ken- I'm a trekkie like you guys; despite the corny dialogue, I still prefer the original series with William Shatner.  I think my favorite characters were Bones McCoy and Scotty......loved the accent!!

Hi Dave,

Good to hear from you!  Here's hoping that this winter subsides soon!

Hi Jim,

I too am somewhat of a "Trekkie".  And also like you have never gone as far as to attend any type of conventions.  I have the original series on Blu-ray which looks fantastic.  There are two different versions.  One with the original special effects, and one with improved special effects.

Just getting caught up on  all the building going on everything looks great. The new job is going well but involves too much time to allow me building anything. I ordered a revell P-61 so when I get started on that I'll feel much better. In the meantime I'm reading evolution of the P-61 by Warren Thompson to get me up to speed. Keep up the great work guys!

Good to hear from you Mike.  I hope the dust settles at your new job so that you can enjoy more free time at home.

Please let us know what you think of that book when you finish.

Here is that next update. I completed the pit earlier in the week, but as I had to wait for the pilot figures to arrive, I was able to do a few other bits. This included painting and assembling the wheel wells and undercarriage. I also added the wing pylons and filled the holes for the pylons I am not adding.

I still have some work to do before painting, including adding the clear parts to the HUD and some sanding. I will leave off the horizontal stabilisers until after painting.

And that's all for now. And I will try my best to keep up with the thread in future.

Great work Bish!  That looks really nice!  Yes  Yes  The cockpit looks awesome.

Yikes!

We have been all over the board here: 16 below one night, but then in the 50's two days later, then right back down to near 0 again! The warm followed by the cold was a nightmare as everything melted, then froze again, covering the roads with black ice! Took me an hour and half to get to work that day!

Hi Jim,

We have not enjoyed any temperatures above freezing for several weeks now.  Right now we just received a good dose of freezing rain and it is currently snowing pretty hard.  Fear is that the winds are expected to pick up as the temperatures drop throughout the day.  That could lead to tree limbs taking out electric lines.  The temp tonight is expected to go down to 7 tonight.
