World at War 1939-1940 Group Build

Excellent work Dan.

Yes the Cartograph decals are very thick. Decal solvent doesn't do much to soften em up. Very flat surfaces so I didn't worry much on this project.

Thanks Rob. S: Those thick decals seem to be common with the Airfix kits. Built two of there 1/72 spitfires, those decals didn't lay in the recessed areas well. Or over bumps.

I can see the finish line now, Iron Annie is getting closer to being ready for decals. The kit comes with four Fallschirmjager's, came across a drawing of 1940's figures to help with painting. The Center engine with cover is attach along with the left engine, more pictures of that later.

Can't wait to see that with the figures Dan. For those jump smocks i use vallejo 886 green grey. Its a bit lighter than the image yopu have there, but seems to be a good match to the real thing.

The figures will add a lot of life to the plane, Dan.

And that's a really impressive camera angle for the photo.

Thanks Bish on the painting color tip, I don't have vallejo colors so I'm working on lighting up tamiya's XF-58 Olive Green. Earlier I mixed XF58 with XF66 light grey, it is close to your figure's smocks.

Checkmateking: Yeah that ground level view makes the aircraft look huge.

Iron Annie is fully assembled and compete. Put on final touch up painting this morning, not use about attaching the ladder it comes off to easy when you sit the aircraft down. I plan to airbrush Model Master Acrylic clear gloss on the topside later day, then do the bottom tomorrow. 

The Junkers Ju52 was featured on a episode of Wings of the Luftwaffe, you can view the episode on youtube.

Ye, that sound slike a good mix. And of course there is always variation in clothing colour anyway. I got into useing Vallejo for all my figures a couple of years ago as many of the referance books i have use them so it made sense, and really useful to have a standard range when i do a lot of figures.

Annie is looking good, looking forward to seeing the decals go on and how you handle those.

Dan, looking really good there, and those added fallschirmjagers should make for a keen display.

Looked at my dated books (Osprey and Andrew Mollo publications) as well as online sources.  The plain smock was generally a green colour (some specifically say olive green), but some seem to have been issued in grey.   Lost Battalions, a webstore dedicated to the reeanctors, goes as far as to describe the oringal cloth was composed of three  threads:
greenish gray (approx 50%), orange (approx 25%), and jade green (approx 25%)
The pants were a field grey colour.

Can't vouch for the hobby paints, but I know of this site and here's what they have to say:

The decals are finished, I quickly found out that when you lay the decal down you can't move it at all. The rough corrugated surface prevents any moving, all you can do is nudge them little by little. I used model master and micro scale softening and setting solutions. The red cross circles really softened up. I cut the swastika's on the tail in half before I dipped them in water, it was a little of a challenge getting them to line up but I like the look. The big letters on the side linked together so I cut the film out.

Thanks Checkmateking, those decals that came with the kit dated 2009 where thin enough to lay down, but they only seem to do that when you first applied them. After words they didn't soften up much. All that's left is some panel washing, and engine exhaust streaks. Hoping I can get Iron Annie done by the end of the week.

Thats looking great Dan. I like how those decals look warn in some ares.

Hello Folks

I just wanted to post a few update pictures of the 1:48 scale Airfix Hurricane.  I got paint on her, and she will get her first glosscoat tonight after I type this, in preparation for her markings.  I need a few little touch ups as well.  Maybe I gloss tomorrow?

Fjs3: Nice paint job on your Hurricane, like the hard edge camouflage.

I can say that my Junker's Ju-52 is finally complete. Decided to go light on the weathering, some area's after I applied the panel wash I removed most of it, I think it gives a worn look. From most of the surfaces be corrugated steel, there is a small amount of recessed lines. I just painted over area's where the panel wash ran on the bottom with RLM 65 light blue. After that I airbrushed model master gloss clear and let it sit over night to dry. The next day I carefully removed the tamiya tape masking the windows, I find that using a #11 blade works to peal up a corner of the tape, then using tweezers to remove the rest. There is some sanding dust stuck to the inside of the side windows, can't really remove that. After all the masks were removed I glued on the antenna using black sowing string.

I fell weight has been lifted off my shoulders with Iron Annie being finished. Started this kit last May and at time's I wanted to give up and quit. But I hanged in there and was determined to finish Iron Annie. This kit provided many challenges, in 1/48 scale wing span is 23.5” (56.69cm), length 16” (40.64cm) and a height of 4.5”(11.43cm). Thanks again to Checkmateking for hosting this group build.  I'll post photos of the bottom Tuesday.

Annie looks beautiful, Dan.  You did fine work with her.  I know what you mean about wanting to sack some kits, but it happens that they might turn out to be worth the effort and frustration.  Yours certainly was.

As for the sanding dust, is there any opening at all--even a small one?  I've managed to get dust off the windows by blowing a stream of air from the airbrush into any little holes available.  It might work through that rear turret.

You've got a lot of nice photos.  Do you have a preference for the front page?

Thanks Cheakmate: I feel that after completing this Ju 52, that I can build another one even better and faster than this one. I'll be applying some of what I've learned towards my Airfix 1/72 Lancaster, many with masking the windows and camouflage painting. As it turned out Iron Annie with in the paint stage for about a month, I've learned that masking other areas even know they won't get any over spray is better to be safe then sorry. I'll pick the second one from the top to go on the cover. And I'll see if I can get something in the rear turret to remove that dust.

Thanks Bish: I'm really happy how the camouflage came out, to me the dark green looks more like dark brown.

O, most definatly. I've got a couple of 72nd 52's myself, going to have to build one soon.

Got my decals on!  Getting down to the wire folks!  I will do a little touching up, repainting where repainting is needed, and start the weathering process.

I just need a little weathering time, and the fiddley bits can be attached.  Once that is complete, I'll be calling her finished!
