So, I finally took the leap and tried using Alclad for the first time. I have to say, WOW!!! I was actually impressed at the results. I used a gloss black enamel for the base coat and then used Duraluminum and Airframe Aluminum. The parts I sprayed were the fan sections and the hot sections of the engine on my 787. I'll try to get some pictures of them tonight and get them added. Just a note: this was done AFTER my unfortunate incident with the laquer thinner and the kitchen table.

Yeah, there's plenty of room!  Welcome aboard!  I hate to ask but what's "Nitto?"  I don't think I've ever heard that.

Nitto is a Japanese company.  Don't know if they are still around.  I'll post the box art soon.  I'm running the Weekend Madness GB at the moment, and have some previous commitments before I can start this.

Okay, gents!

Tonight I laid the final coat a white on my MD-87. I sprayed Testers flat white so to gloss it up I will clear with Future.

Tonight I ALSO got to try out my new spray booth!     I must say that I am IMPRESSED!    For a $13 fan unit, it did the job -- and quite well at that!   If you have the money, it would not hurt to buy a more powerful fan; however, for the casual sprayer, this fan seems to do the trickBig Smile    Tonight I set up my paint ship on the kitchen tabled covered with an old sheet (venting the booth out of a window with an insert I made out of foam board).  I sprayed a whole cup of enamel white.  When I was ifnished spraying, there was NO odor in the kitchen at all. No smog cloud lingering over me.       Tomorrow I will roll up a piece of paper , light it on fire, and blow it out. I will video the smoke so you can see how it will suck the smoke right down the fan.

NOTE:   I did remove the fan cover as suggested by another member to help improve the air flow (if needed).  Since my fan it on the lower end of the fan spectrum I removed it.   I also caulked around the fan unit to aid in efficiency.

Cool!  I think I will be trying this.  Not only would it be better for health reasons but it will cut down on the dust that lands on everything.  Looking forward to the vid!

Here's a little update with the DC-10.  Since its a -10 it doesn't use the center main landing gear.  So  I installed the part that covers the opening and filled in the panel lines:

This ends up working out really well because one of the wheels came out of the mold with some major distortion and wasn't useable.

I've assembled the engines.  The molded vortex generators looked terrible so I cut them off and made my own replacements out of thin styrene.  Below you can see that I've sanded off the vortex generators from one engine:

Then I attached the scratch built generators:

I've also painted the compressor fan steel and masked it off so that I can paint the inside of the intake and the spinner:

The next step will be to attach the engines to the wings and use Mr Surfacer to fill in the seams where they join the wing.

Finally got some work done on the 787.  In the photos, I've dry-fit the horizontal stabilizers and the engines.  The United tail logo is just a photo copy that I have scaled to fit and taped in place to see how it would look.  I've got a little more sanding and priming to do on the nose and engines.  Below are a couple more shots.

So how did the 787 go together?  Was the fit pretty good?

Fly-n-hi

So how did the 787 go together?  Was the fit pretty good?

It didnt go together too bad.  There were some minor seam issues on the fuselage and the engines, but filling was accomplished with using vallejo plastic putty.  I've receive part of the decal set for the aircraft and the other is on its way since they didnt send the whole decal sheet that I ordered.  Planning on getting some more work done on it today hopefully.

B_one, the 787 is a good kit.  Decent detail for a small scale; unfortunately, the detail in the wheel wells is completely lacking.  The small parts can be VERY fragile and difficult to remove from the tree without some minor damage.  I was able to repair any of the damage and the few sink marks with Tamyia putty and Vallejo acrylic plastic putty.  As good as the fit was on the majority of the parts, I would definitely build another Zvezda kit.

Hello gents!   I have no forgot about the short video of my spray booth!   The only time I had to work the last couple of days I used to airbrush the grey on my MD-87 today.   Tomorrow I have surgery to have my wisdom teeth removed and have a cyst filled on my upper pallet. I'm scared to death LOL  But I should be able to model the next day -- just not eatTongue Tied    But -- modeling is more important Big Smile

It took me able 1.5 hours to mask her for the grey on her belly and tail.     I just finished spraying so I will post pictures tomorrow ( I should be fine to unmask it -- surgery is in the morning)  of her unmasked.

Since I had to sand the two wing halves quite a bit to eliminate the seam I ended up destroying alot of the raised panel lines.  So I just sanded all of them off.  I bought these corroguard (spelling?) decals instead of messing with the masking and painting.  If I had preserved the lines, or if the corroguard lines were all straight, I would paint them but this is easier in the long run:

I don't know if these are any good or not but I guess we'll find out.

Nice Falcon!  I'm just a few steps ahead of you.

I noticed that the leading edge slats are incorrect on the DC-10.  On the outer part of the wing, outside of the engine, the slats should have six panels.  The kit's molded detail makes it look like on big panel.  So I busted out the Dymo tape and my UMM scriber and scribed in the 6 slat panels:

I measured the distance between each panel.  You can see the black tick marks on the tape.

I've also scribed in all of the spoiler panels, as well.  They are a bit harder to see:

I'd like to join the GB please. I have an Airfix 1/144 VC-10 I've been wanting to start using some sweet British Caladonian decals I have. May add another build or two or three before the deadline though.

Just thought I'd drop in real quick to see how everyone's builds are coming along.  I've finally received the decals from 26decals and they look as good as I thought they would.  Now that I have them, I can get to masking the fuslage for paint.  I couldnt find any Canadian Voodoo Grey or Boeing grey without spending $$, so I am going to use a light gull grey from MM and a pure white from MM.  The grey might be a tad too dark, but we'll give it a shot to see how it looks.  I hope to have some paint laid down by Saturday.

I'm also working on another project for a 48 hour build at the same time, so while stuff is drying for that, I can concentrate on the fine details on the 787.

Good evening gentlemen!   With the approaching holidays I have been very busy.  I have found time to model, but I have not taken many pictures.

The MD-87:   She is almost finished!  Paint and decal work is finished.  All I have left to to apply the Bare Metal Foil to the underside of the wings and glue the landing gear onBig Smile

Better pictures will be here soon

Vega:  The floats are almost ready for paint.  After hours of fighting with the wing fitment, they were finally attached.  The empennage and wing took a lot of filler.  Perfect Plastic Putty saved the day!   I heavily pre-shaded ( I like to start off with too much and work my way back)  the airframe. I'm going for a grungy, semi-flat, flown hard and put away wet look. I applied quite a few coats of MM enamel Insignia Red.  The paint went of beautifully.   That's where I am at so far!

Subaroo, its looking good.  I know all about being busy around the holidays!  I was able to knock out a build for the 48 hour GB and it didnt turn out too bad.  Now back to finishing up the 787 and the other projects I've got waiting in the wings (pun intended)
