Wayne, Doog, in doing some research on German/European tracks, I found this photo of the track they used for "Dora".

definitely different looking tracks. i keep leaning more toward the K-5 RR GUN. i know me and a single picture can take me off to another branch of the decision tree. still haven't decided on color. did find a pick unloading ammo from a low side gondola so i could have a 3 car train and nowhere to put it. that would be over 6 feet.

painting this is going to be in stages with the build. looks like all the wheels and axles, set aside. build the bottom of the trucks and paint and weather.than the tops and paint and add all the wheels. probably decal the trucks when i finish painting but weather the outer areas after it is built.

good thing i have a bunch of 1/72 to break up the sameness.

Wayne I think you really must do it in stages, that will be a truly fantastic build. I hope you keep us all informed as you go along.

Oh and thats a piece of HO track for reference, in the second photo you can see the ties on top of my turntable and the rails in the fore front.

don't pay the ransom, i escaped. just been in a slump and taking care of life things. can't wait for this to start.

interesting. i think the plastic may work and you don't have to worry about 2nd rail being the correct distance. i am pondering. i have to figure out how to break my base down for transport, especially since i may add a diesel and a low side gondola. that's 38" + 11" + 10" plus some width perhaps to park a kubelwagen for scale. that's 5+ feet.

Wayne thats like hauling a Dora, are you planning on plastic tracks or laying your own. I think splitting or hinging the plastic track is tough but the track itself will be hidden under some wheels and throwing some ballast or ground cover on the seams may be a partial solution. You'd almost have to make a support under the entire run like a thick piece of aluminum that wouldn't have much weight.

i plan on mounting it on a thick piece of wood. you're right the bed is no problem but the rails could be when i split the base. but i can probably have the split under the rear gun truck so gun, gondola behind back of gun where the generator and ammo handling is and diesel behind that.  i plan on using 2 work stations. got an email from a friend who wants to follow this so i sent the link to him.

i know you don't do contests but i do so i have to consider categories. the gun itself would be miscellaneous or probably artillery. add a KUBELWAGEN and 2 figures it's a vignette (except in local contests where there aren't enough entries). add 2 more  "vehicles" and gun crew throws it into diorama.

i would probably have to put all the sub assys of DORA together upstairs because i don't think the complete gun can get up the stairs from my bunker.

my order came in with a second low side gondola and the VALLEJO RR paint set (35% off and free shipping) at Colorado Springs cutthroat Christmas party and ordered gun crew and 2 sets of ammo. think the RR gun is a go though i am also looking at doing something bizarre with a 1/72 one. still haven't decided on color.

also

trumpeter needs a 1/35 boxcar. i saw a blurb trumpeter is coming out with a 1/35 soviet armored rail car

on another note i was voted most improved modeler 2014 because of my wins in 5 contests this year and my expanding comfort zone.

boy i have been in a slump. gondola looks nice. probably a quick build, the low sides are removable. i will paint the wood a slightly different color and distress it. couplers need to be functional and the air hoses would have to be redone to connect to other cars if creating a train..

I was thinking about scratching some hoses and maybe couplers too. Been busy myself clearing up a couple builds then I'm good.

my gun crew and AM 280mm ammo came in today., also ordered a high side gondola. i looks like i can do a crew loading ammo from a flat car or truck. i actually have a picture of that. i am really getting jazzed for this and we have a regional here in june.

Do you have a thought what you're going to enter, you have a lot going. A 1/35 diorama would be awesome but also would take up a lot of space, but you could always peel off a car or loco for an individual entry. These builds are going to be fun to follow.

still thinking the diorama thing. a lot of work for one entry. i can set it up to have separate entries. OTOH i have done bases and adding a figure or 2 would be a vignette. haven't done figues so a new challenge. BUT a big diorama would be cool. this is going to be fun.

might i suggest we post our in progress in the ARMOR forum too. it has been noted sometimes builds in GBs don't show up in the more specific category. plus it would give our GB more visibility.

the gondolas look like quick builds. just finished this puzzle in preparation.

Will do, I just ordered a low sider. I'll display them both maybe with a Flak 38 or something similar.

i have 2 low sides, just ordered a high side. everybody seems to like mounting the FLAK 38(4) on things, flat cars, tenders, u-boats, s-boats. these things were crew intensive and took up more space than was really available. might i suggest a FLAK 38 single barrel OR have it in front on the locomotives with a sand bags and an MG-42 crew for partisan protection or setting off mines.

want to get really crazy have a crater with the gondola tipped inside,  twisted rails wood ties

I have an idea for pushing a car after seeing "The Train" the other day. I'm working on a few ideas that I'll run by you before we actually get started.

I find myself strangely interested...! I have recently had the stirring of a plan to build a locomotive from scratch in large scale, but that's not on this year's agenda. Maybe a classic loco kit, though!

Thunder now that would be something awesome, I've had the RR bug hit me to and I can't tell you why. What type of locomotive are you thinking?

"This kit can be built as a road version or railroad version. An unpainted train track base is also included for optimal display of the railroad version!"

I think this is same kit with some extra details:

Wayne, Jibber,

I'd like to change my entry to the Hasegawa 1/72 60 cm Morser Karl "Thor" railway mortar if you don't mind.

I got it for Christmas.

SWEET! i have one of those in my stash too. and a HOBBYBOSS one. and the 1/35 mortar but no rail carrier. in fact i have a lot of RR  stuff. i think they are breeding on the shelf.

and the DELOREAN sounds down right cool.

ONE MORE WEEK.

Steve it looks like we all have that same kit. I had it down the other day going through the box and I think it'll build into a really nice kit. The parts were crisp with a lot of detail and the instructions fairly easy to follow. Its nice getting the rail carriers with the gun, and track too. Can't wait to get started, I'm finishing up an M88 and then I'll be jumping clean. Steve once thats completed you could add a German locomotive in front of it for an awesome display.

Yeah, that would be awesome. I would have to add some track to allow the length of a loco though.
This build and the 1/350 Indianapolis I'm doing for the 1945 GB are going to be a kick.  Stick out tongue

lay your own 1/72 track. it's easy. i told JIBBER i would do a tutorial so i best be about it. all you need is HO scale rails, some HO scale spikes, HO ballast, the correct size basswood strips, a basswood base and some terrain. i use cheap modeling clay. the only hard part is getting the second rail EXACTLY parallel and the correct distance.
