Hi,

all new to this but love it already :)

In the Trumpeter 01518 Railway Gondola you have the wagon wheels as two parts, sprue B parts # 23 & 24.

Should the inner side be flush or is the very small offset intended?

Very Best Regards

Johan

mine were almost flush. i just used a bunch of 3M body putty and sanded it smooth. by the time it's painted and weathered no one will tell if there is a seam line there or not. and, if they are uniform, who's to say that isn't correct.

i bet you are finding this even more interesting when compared to the OTS (One True Scale) one you did last month,. i have some wheel finishing up to do on the gondola before putting it all together. looks like the frame warped a tad but it should be easy to fix leaning more toward dark yellow and camp for K-5. of course that could change by the end of the week again.

still fighting the PE on the BM-21 MLR. i think i need to get into zen yoda mode to be successful with that.

You'll be fine, be at one with that fragile, expensive, extremely tiny piece of breakable metal….

maybe i should whine over at the STAR WARS GB. Big Smile

started putting the car together. these are the wheels. primed and painted with MMA rust which was too shiny. i toned it down with a pastel mixture of brown, burnt umber, and a touch of golden ochre. scrubbed it in with a stiff brush. after that i rubbed in some black pastel. silver is VALLEJO AV aluminum brush painted.

Wayne,

I used to work for a company that builds locomotives. The axles look perfect!

Great job sir.  Yes

A frame and assembly update. I attached the main pistons and connected them to the main piston connector rods, shown in one of the pics. I also set it numerous parts and painted up the wheels. I have a few more frame parts to assemble but i've left off some of the smaller ones that have the chance of breaking off that I can add near the end, such as steps, car connectors, lights etc. At this point theres no need to work around them.

This is a different type of build for me, I'm actually priming and painting parts as I go along, something I wouldn't think about with other builds but here it makes sense. I think this is not unlike a real locomotive being built from the ground up.

I still have a lot of work yet to do on the frame. There are wheels and brakes to go on and all the connecting rods, and numerous other parts, then I think it'll start looking like a locomotive.

I mentioned earlier that i'm going to make two jigs to help with the assembly. One to hold the large boiler while thats being built up and the second to turn the entire locomotive over to finish up those parts on the under carriage.  Tonight i'm going to go through my plans and sort out my next moves, but so far it's coming along.

Thanks Spure, once they're placed on the frame they'll get an oil wash, dusting and some other weathering. They should look pretty real.

Well guys, I have just realized that I haven't posted anything recently, so I had better post something.  Great work so far.  I really like those steam pistons and the rusty wheels.

I have painted most of the gondola thus far and need to decal before I put it together and start weathering the outer and lower parts of the car.  I used a mix of Tamiya Dark Grey, German Grey and NATO black to get  a kind of mottled look as a base.  I then have beat up the wooden deck planks to try to give a well worn look but would like some opinions on this effect.  This is kind of new to me and I want to know what you guys think.

Thanks for any and all input.

I will take more pics soon.

Caveman I borrowed this photo to show how the lines darken with an oil wash, actually you can be sloppy with it like liquid stains in the wood. I have a lot of photos of aged wood I use for reference, try Google. Maybe some pigments in entry ways, theres a lot you can do with aging wood.

Its coming along Caveman, looks like a cool build.

looking good guys. i've been working a bit on BM-21 MRL for another GB and fighting a cold that has laid me up for a few days.

i like the wood pic. i painted mine VALLEJO AV german gray. i have a set of COMART gray scale acrylic airbrush washes (birthday present) to try on the gondola and i have to get the rails together.

I like the subtle wash and rust pigments on the iron parts and the bare metal technique in the photo, just enough.

Wayne I couldn't have done it without the jig, some of these parts protrude and theres no doubt I would've broke something along the way. Its coming along.

i finally felt well enough to get a bit of bench time. more work on BM-21 than gondola due to deadlines but got the ties painted. don't  really like the color. not to worry by the time i oil wash it no one will known what the original color was.

TERRY what paints are you using?

I always use Army Painter Primers and Tamiya XF7 Red and a blend of flat black and German grey for my base color.

hey TERRY. that is coming along nicely.  think my cold is on the mend. got the frame and bed together. i added some additional bracing which won't be seen when painted. some touch up and weathering before i add the end pieces. just remembered i have a piece that goes across the center so will have to razor saw a groove there.

MC I get it, I too have a tough time deciding what to build next. I have a 360 waiting to go so I'm really looking forward to yours.

Wayne everything looks good, hope you're feeling better.

Now that sounds cool, I've only seen a few in camo and only in the armored trains. I've found a photo that i'm sure is 3 color camo.
