JohanT Hi, all new to this but love it already :) In the Trumpeter 01518 Railway Gondola you have the wagon wheels as two parts, sprue B parts # 23 & 24. Should the inner side be flush or is the very small offset intended? Very Best Regards Johan

This was a little tricky fitting it correctly, but some tape a small clamps and I think its all right. in a couple of the pics you can see that the piston retracts that will help with installing the rods later.

i bet you are finding this even more interesting when compared to the OTS (One True Scale) one you did last month,. i have some wheel finishing up to do on the gondola before putting it all together. looks like the frame warped a tad but it should be easy to fix leaning more toward dark yellow and camp for K-5. of course that could change by the end of the week again.
still fighting the PE on the BM-21 MLR. i think i need to get into zen yoda mode to be successful with that.
You'll be fine, be at one with that fragile, expensive, extremely tiny piece of breakable metal….
jibber You'll be fine, be at one with that fragile, expensive, extremely tiny piece of breakable metal….
maybe i should whine over at the STAR WARS GB.
started putting the car together. these are the wheels. primed and painted with MMA rust which was too shiny. i toned it down with a pastel mixture of brown, burnt umber, and a touch of golden ochre. scrubbed it in with a stiff brush. after that i rubbed in some black pastel. silver is VALLEJO AV aluminum brush painted.
Yea they look good, real good in fact. Since I started with the RR stuff I've downloaded a million pics and that looks right on.
Wayne,
I used to work for a company that builds locomotives. The axles look perfect!
Great job sir.

I sprayed a base red to the wheels and cylinders, but I'm such an idiot I sprayed X-7 instead of XF-7. I was wondering why it wasn't looking right as you can see in the pick how shinny they are. Luckily its just these items and not the frame, that still has its red primer. Also lucky is that I always paint my parts backside first to prevent goof ups like this, but I'll be able to tone it down with some spray matte. I have an entire wall of paints and its a wakeup call to put them away in the right spot and not grab the wrong red? What an idiot... In another pic are the two main vices I use and couldn't live without. Just a shout out for them and they're not expensive. As my main colors on the entire locomotive will be XF-7 Red on the frame and lower parts to include the wheels and Tamiya's German Grey and Flat Black in a custom mix for the rest. Terry

I attached the main pistons and connected them to the main piston connector rods, shown in one of the pics. I also set it numerous parts and painted up the wheels. I have a few more frame parts to assemble but i've left off some of the smaller ones that have the chance of breaking off that I can add near the end, such as steps, car connectors, lights etc. At this point theres no need to work around them. This is a different type of build for me, I'm actually priming and painting parts as I go along, something I wouldn't think about with other builds but here it makes sense. I think this is not unlike a real locomotive being built from the ground up. I still have a lot of work yet to do on the frame. There are wheels and brakes to go on and all the connecting rods, and numerous other parts, then I think it'll start looking like a locomotive. I mentioned earlier that i'm going to make two jigs to help with the assembly. One to hold the large boiler while thats being built up and the second to turn the entire locomotive over to finish up those parts on the under carriage. Tonight i'm going to go through my plans and sort out my next moves, but so far it's coming along. Terry

jibber, Wayne, great start to your projects. I like how the wheels are being painted realistically

Thanks Spure, once they're placed on the frame they'll get an oil wash, dusting and some other weathering. They should look pretty real.
Well guys, I have just realized that I haven't posted anything recently, so I had better post something. Great work so far. I really like those steam pistons and the rusty wheels.
I have painted most of the gondola thus far and need to decal before I put it together and start weathering the outer and lower parts of the car. I used a mix of Tamiya Dark Grey, German Grey and NATO black to get a kind of mottled look as a base. I then have beat up the wooden deck planks to try to give a well worn look but would like some opinions on this effect. This is kind of new to me and I want to know what you guys think.
Thanks for any and all input.
I will take more pics soon.
Caveman I borrowed this photo to show how the lines darken with an oil wash, actually you can be sloppy with it like liquid stains in the wood. I have a lot of photos of aged wood I use for reference, try Google. Maybe some pigments in entry ways, theres a lot you can do with aging wood.
Its coming along Caveman, looks like a cool build.
looking good guys. i've been working a bit on BM-21 MRL for another GB and fighting a cold that has laid me up for a few days.
i like the wood pic. i painted mine VALLEJO AV german gray. i have a set of COMART gray scale acrylic airbrush washes (birthday present) to try on the gondola and i have to get the rails together.
I like the subtle wash and rust pigments on the iron parts and the bare metal technique in the photo, just enough.

First I test fitted the wheels to see how even they would sit on the track, and they're all touching that means everything is square. Then I threw together a small jig to hold the boiler and started on the firebox. I needed some putty on a few seams and connected it all adding the smoke box door. I've never been very good at putty and sanding, seems like it takes me ten times longer to get it done! Theres a lot more to be installed, baby steps.

A few updates on my BR86 Locomotive. First I needed to test fit the boiler assembly to the frame, then went on to work on the assembly by add all the essentials such as pumps, generators, rods and piping. I had an issue with a warped pipe that I had to straighten out by taping it in place and adhering it to the boiler but it just took some patience and maybe a little luck but it all went it fine. A lot of these pipes come in small sections and I had to be very careful holding these sections together and bending them in place. You can see this on several of the photos. I bent two PE window parts for the front cab wall and finally attached the cab floor. Final photo is an almost finished boiler assembly. I got a lot of the finicky parts installed and the boiler is almost ready to prime then its onto the cab and tender. Movin on.. Terry

I somehow missed the smokehouse door. Terry

hey JIBBER looking good. i like the jig idea. will have to steal that. i haven't done anything in a week. just laid up with a cold and finally remembered i am not 25 anymore and can't do the crap i used to do.
Wayne I couldn't have done it without the jig, some of these parts protrude and theres no doubt I would've broke something along the way. Its coming along.

I also assembled the firebox door and whats provided of the interior controls. I gave serious consideration to adding a full PE interior set, but after the cab is built up almost nothing will be visible. Maybe a future Locomotive where I make it so the roof can be removed. That is really looking fine Jibber.
i finally felt well enough to get a bit of bench time. more work on BM-21 than gondola due to deadlines but got the ties painted. don't really like the color. not to worry by the time i oil wash it no one will known what the original color was.
TERRY what paints are you using?
I always use Army Painter Primers and Tamiya XF7 Red and a blend of flat black and German grey for my base color.

I've waited to install all the handrails and doors, mostly because they could easily break and I'm still thinking about adding a couple figures. If I do add an engineer, conductor or even a Gestapo Officer, that will tell me how to place the doors and seats. I'm also thinking about putting down a wood floor, I really needed to make that decision yesterday but I still have an open window to get it down. I need to finish up the Firebox door and controls in the cab. I think I'll brush on a coat of Mr Surfacer 500 to give it the casting effect I'm looking for, then a primer and a final finish. Terry

hey TERRY. that is coming along nicely. think my cold is on the mend. got the frame and bed together. i added some additional bracing which won't be seen when painted. some touch up and weathering before i add the end pieces. just remembered i have a piece that goes across the center so will have to razor saw a groove there.
Man, I really gota start my WR360. I'll get going on it after I get the Star Wars and Marine builds done.
MC I get it, I too have a tough time deciding what to build next. I have a 360 waiting to go so I'm really looking forward to yours.
Wayne everything looks good, hope you're feeling better.
i have a 360 also. leaning more toward dark yellow late war color on K-5, maybe green and brown camo.

Now that sounds cool, I've only seen a few in camo and only in the armored trains. I've found a photo that i'm sure is 3 color camo.
