2015 Messerschmitt Bf 109 Group Build

Progress pics, as promised. The fit of the upper cowl of the D was pretty atrocious, as other reviewers have mentioned over the years, so I shimmed the fit with thin stripstock:

The radiator intake was totally bare of detail and as I didn't fancy sending away for the Airwaves set, I thought I'd scratch some detail to go here. I used some fine metal mesh and stripstock for the prominent V-shaped structure that appears on the Airwaves part and which I saw in one or two pics which I can no longer find...

Note all the filler...

Next job, graft on the wing, which will call for more cutting back, shimming up and filling...

Jay -- the centre strut in common with later models I'm pretty sure is the actuator jack for the moveable intake flap -- I always add those on Hasegawas but the way this one is engineered it would be a PITA... Thanks for the observations, though!

I was foolin' around with my Tamiya weathering master sets this morning.  I applied a little silver to the raised edges of the cockpit floor.  I think it looks OK.  My question is, will I loose some of the effect after applying a wash?  I'll apply an acrylic dull coat first before the oil wash.

Work has been progressing slowly, but surely.  I'm just amazed how fast some of you guys can build these kits.

flyerduke: Yes, unfortunately you will. a wash will tone the effects down possibly too much. You wanna do stuff like that last bubba. At least that's been my experience.

Yes, a wash will dull the silver down. But, if you apply silver, then a wash, seal it, then add some light silver again you will get a two tone silver or bare metal affect of both dirty bare metal with age and cleaner bare metal that is newly worn. I think this just give the affect more depth. That's what I have done on my last two kits and I like the affect it gives. I love the Tamiya weathering kit also.

I thought about getting myself a Hobbycraft P-36 Hawk and build it as a Finnish machine, but Hobbycraft doesn't look that appealing to me anymore. I'm probably just going to get my the Special Hobby one in 1/32. Any input on that company?

Craig: The effect you achieved there looks really nice. Joe is right, it's probably going to get toned down quite a bit. I'd be more worried about the dullcoat doing that though...

Falcon you are literally "flying" thru this build!  Looks great!    Herman has been busy as per usual with any Luft build. He made mods to the IP, ammo cans, well pretty much everything except the very plain looking seat (which I'm not really thrilled with so it will change somehow)  The added pe was cherry picked from an Eduard E-4 set...

WOW guys, some real nice progress here, the GB is really getting off in full flow.

I had an e-mail from HPH on Tues, the English was not brilliant, but they seem to have posted the parts, and no, there was no mention of price.

Greetings Gentlemen… I know I’m bit late to the GB gathering. I’m just getting started (if you don't count my childhood) building models for, and eventually with, my 5 year old grandson. I have posted an intro in the introduction section of the forum.

Last week I checked in with Mustang1989 to ensure I could join. After getting the go ahead I ordered a Hasegawa 1/32 Messerschmitt BF109F-4 Trop. Should be here in a few days.

Went back and read this thread over the weekend. Some very serious talent here. It loolks like these GB’s are a great way to learn. I look forward to learning and meeting new friends.

Handi, Quickboost makes a very nice E seat in 1/32. Does have molded on belts, which aren't everybody's favorite, but can be made to look pretty decent.

Thanks Everyone   Tuco I am not a fan of the molded belts,,, I just have a hard time painting them realistically ,,, I may go the way of the fabric belts on the next build.

SS -- Special Hobby is a company of long standing now so I would expect them to have their act together. I have one or two of their older kits in my stash but not built one yet (if I'm thinking of the right company!) Limited run plastic parts, very nice resin details cast for them by True Details -- with care they should build up very nicely.

Man I cant believe we've got some builds close to finished already,,, GOOD! Just leaves MORE time to build 109s! Excellent work fellas!!!

Heres some more from pokey ole me...

Getting some of the major components done, One thing on this ( and many other) kit, is the center brace of the radiators are always too big. Its very minor and easily fixed but still an annoyance. The repair is the piece of .020 (white piece) of plastistruct in the center of the radiator cowling.

Ready to mount engine in the frame.

For once it actually fit well and didn't put up a fight.

And fitting the cowling on the nose and again if not for one minor high spot it fit well... The cowl wont be glued but once the prop is in place it wont come off due to gun barrels sticking out through it. Oh Well... Take care all! More this weekend.

What's the over/under on how many builds in this GB end up in the magazine? Some amazing work so far.

I got the fuselage together and the engine compartment, with the cowlings lined up really nicely. Pretty challenging with this kit! The hard part is over, I hope. Wings, then I get to start on the really fun stuff. Hopefully sometime over the weekend!

Nice engine work Doug.

My wife and kids are leaving me home alone with the dogs.  This means I will get cracking on my Bf 110G-4 and then onto my 109D.  

I can't wait.  All these great builds are motivating me to get working.

Very well done, Steve! She's come out an absolute treat! The diorama base sets it off perfectly and the finish is evocative of a service machine. Double thumbs up!

I'm plugging along on it's HC stablemate, the -D, next up is to repair the gunsight and fit the canopy, then she's ready for masking and paint.

I would describe it as a more trying kit than the Avia, not as well engineered (and by that I'm being kind, I'll tell the truth when I blog about it!)
