Ken, thanks, lost her in Sept., Jan 7th would have been 27 years.  I think there is a chapter in Salem or Portland.  The LHS in Albany has a get together on Thursday nights, but have not got over there yet.

Some more in progress from tonight:

BK- I love it as well, not overdone, you quit at the right time.

tates, Thanks, I know what you mean on the glass, more freaking windows than a skyscraper

Gamera- Thanks,

Got the fuse closed up today, and will get wings and flaps glued up in the morning before I have to head out for a meeting, and get back in time for the game and a $5 buck pizza.

Got back into this to have something to kill the evening time other than TV.  Lonely since the soul mate passed.

Hi Art,

Very sorry to hear about the passing of your soul mate.  I can't imagine what that must feel like.

You are with some good people on this site.  I don't know if there is an International Plastic Modelers Society (IPMS) chapter near you, but it is another great place to meet other people with the same interests.  Here is a link to their website page that can help you find out:

I'm taking a break from ww2 bombers after this build,  masking a million windows is exhausting work . Goldhammer your build is coming along nicely.

Hi Tates,

Wow, that is a lot of masking!  And I hate masking!  I used to paint cars with my Dad and even then I hated masking!

Looks like you did a good job of it!  Yes  Yes

Thanks Ken, appreciate it.  Been a long time away from the hobby, like 30 years or so.

Pay no attention to the IP, got it straightened back up and refit.  Will end up painting front and rear canopies off because of the gun hole in the front and the cannon slot in the rear.  Bird will only have the gun mounts, as she would have been dis-armed.  Have the Eduard mask set, but may go with the other one due to comments here on the forum.  Got SAC gear for her, and may get a set of resin wheels since they have the weight bulge to them.

Art

Hi Art,

I know where you are coming from being away from the hobby for a long time.  I started originally when I was about 8 years old and quit when I turned 16.  I started back up about 4 years ago, making it 37 years absent.

I found it was quite a change from when I last modeled.  So much more detail in the kits.  And the amount of aftermarket resources can be staggering.  Add to that all the tools now available, this hobby is now at a completely new level!

It sounds like you are doing your research on your build.  That is my favorite part of modeling.

Tates: OUCH! That gives me a headache just looking at it, lucky you're about 3/4ths done looks like.

Goldhammer: I know what you mean, modeling does take your mind off things. Looking forward to seeing her all closed up.

BTW: Just posted you tothe front page Brandon- bit surprised and delighted to have two great finished models and we're still in the first month!!! Yes

Brandon: She looks fantastic! I don't know what the right colour for early war Zeros was but what you've got there looks so right. As Jack said she looks used but not over-done. Really sharp work!

Goldhammer: Looking good, very nice looking work there!

I am calling this one done. Finished all the weathering and final assembly, last minute painting, touch ups and whatnot. So, here she is in all her less than perfect glory. I wish I could have done better, but i kept making mistakes that could have been avoided and I get mad at myself for doing that. I expect better from myself. Next one will look better.

Brandon - your Zero turned out fantastic, a striking finish really, and I think the base colour you have arrived at looks great! Yes

You stated your original intention was to not have it overly weathered, and to me it looks used , but not abused compared to some other finishes out there.  Maybe take some of the sheen off the cowling?  I'm pretty sure I have read somewhere that the shine was eventually lost - just can't remember how quickly that happened?  As for chipping on the cowl and leading wing edges, they don't detract from the build, but I am wondering how much of this would happen on a carrier based plane?

regards,

Jack

I finished up the whitewash on the Type 74 last weekend painting it on and over three coats of hair spray and then chipped and wore it off. Now I'm now ready to start on the suspension/tracks and lower surface mud and grime...

Great job on the Type 74 Cliff!!  The detail is wonderful!  Yes  Yes

Brandon, your Hamp is looking great! I agree with the others about your weathering. It certainly does not look overdone to my eye. Just right I think...

BSY, the Rufe is looking very sharp as well. Your ability to scratchbuild and superdetail in 1/72 always impresses me!

Well, I have decided upon my entry. Something I can build in a weekend, IF I was to build OOB and leave it at that...

Of course you know that I wont leave well enough alone, but even my initial research on the cockpit shows that were I to go all out in there, it will still be quite simple! The V-1 I will also build, but obviously not for this GB...

Hey Stick, nice choice there. I will be interested in how this comes out.

BrandonK

I am gonna stop the weathering process here. I may have overdone it; I haven't decided yet.

I was cruising along after I had applied the gloss coat and the Flory black over that when I went to remove the Flory some of it refused to come off, even with soap and windex. It stained places in the clear and the only thing I can think of is that my coat was uneven and it found the weak spots. So, that kinda forced my hand to weather this one up more than I had initially intended.

So, to recap the weathering process. I pre-shaded the kit, painted and all that. Then when the clear was down I applied a full coat of Flory wash black and washed off the excess. I then found that to be too dark so I also applied Flory Grime over the panel lines and it did lighten the look a bit. I then used some silver to add chipping to the leading edges of the wings and cowl behind the prop as well as the walk way and step. It came out decent.

I sealed all that down and then proceeded to try my hand at pastels. I went over the panel lines with dark grey and removed the excess. I then added my powder residue and exhaust stains with the use of my Tamiya Master weathering set using "soot" as the color. I also added a slight fuel stain to the wings at the fill caps and stopped there. I then sealed that down with "fixative" to seal down the pastels and prevent the clear from discoloring and pooling them up. I will clear it one more time.

So, anyway, this is how it looks now. Not too far to go before I can call this one complete. I will do better next time. I learned a ton on this build about Japanese planes and the next will look much better.

Hey BrandonK, I have to agree with everyone else man.  That wash looks great just the way it is!  I think you did a fine job!  Yes  Yes

BrandonK

I managed to get all the decals done yesterday. I wanted to paint many of these on this kit, but I wasn't in a position to do so leaving me to use only kit decals. They look nice and went on without any fuss, but the kit decals are very thick and just don't want to conform to raised panel lines. I scored the recessed panel lines and used Microsol and they sank in nicely, but I have had to work quite a bit to get them to lay down on the wings over the raised surfaces.

I did mask and paint the red warning lines which was pretty easy. I used Mr Color 114 which is RLM 23 that is darker than Tamiya's XF-7. I found this color was a near perfect match for the kit decals. I'm most happy with them now, but I bit more attention before I clear them and move to weathering. Next time I will paint as many as I can.

Nice work with the decals and painted lines BrandonK!  It looks great!  Yes  Yes

Gamera, I just might do that with the V-1. Your Type-74 is looking real sharp! I always liked the lines of that tank. Very sleek for a modern MBT.

Gee Brandon, when you wrote about having 'overdone' the weathering and the Flory not coming off I was expecting to see big black blotches all over her- but I agree with the guys- she looks perfect to me! I wish some of my 'successes' looked as good as your 'disaster'!

SP: The Okra, um Oka looks good! If you want to go ahead and build the V-1 here along side here just for the @#@# of it I wouldn't mind seeing how she comes out either!

Brandon,

I have to say that I disagree with you here.  I think your weathering is spot on, and soooooo not overdone.  I looks great!!  I love the subtle shading, and chipping you used,  In my opinion you NAILED IT!!

Beautiful job and you certainly did a great job on this build all around.

Regards
