Got some Invader work done today. Fuselage and nose went on fine. The front windscreen was just 'ok' had to do some filling as there was quite a gap near the front. The rear dorsal window piece was not good. The fuselage and window did not mate well. Poorly molded me thinks. Anyway, it's also just 'ok' and I can feel good about it now.

Trying Vallejo's new metalizer acrylics on this build. I've heard good things form the folks at my local IPMS so I'm gonna switch from USAF olive green/black nose from box art to the French NM option. This is actually a cool choice as it add 4 more .50's under the wings in two dual mount pods, so, more guns. This plane will have a total of 18 MGs when it's done. What a beast.

Installed all clear pieces with the pain mentioned above and masked with black BMF.

I decided to prep the plane with Tamiya black. You can spray the Vallejo direct on the plastic, but, I was warned it's brittle and will come off with a touch, so, I'm trying the undercoat method.

Really nice job on that KC-135R. That's a big project, and it looks like you've finished it very cleanly.

Nice progress on the 109 and Zeke, Owl.

Here's abit of progress on my Revell Hunter F6. The first photo shows it all masked up as I spray the wing root intakes aluminium.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Duke, Your welcome. the west store didn't have an atomic cannon so going with plan D, as soon as the directions dry out from dumping a glass of white wine on them. scan the instructions sprue picture, measure gun barrel and scale it up.

Im building the Zero alongside a bf-109e for the BoB-GB, fyi. Here are both little birdies buttoned up!

a little bit of putty was required to smooth everything out. There was a fair bit of gappage on the underside of the Zero, where the flaps met the wing. But all in all, the fit of parts is good! That was really the only trouble area, and Im not sure if it was due to the kit itself, or just user error. Dunce

Im going for a beaten up Zero. The markings are for a bird from '44, so thinking things were getting tough on the japanese at this point, and their planes showed that.

I 'primed' the model with krylon silver, and once that cured, I painted on a splotchy, faded finish with my ususal testor enamels.

Once the enamels were just barely dry to the touch, I laid down bits of tape where I wanted the chipping to be. TUG! off goes the paint! Ill add a nit more chipping once the decals are down, so everything matches

both little birdies are now ready for decals!

Invader is looking good Rob! Way to go!

Today was finishing day for me. I can now claim this Group Build badge. First though, here's what I did to get there...

I started out by decaling this beast, since I'd already given it a clearcoat the day before:

Later, I gave it a dark brown wash overall, and a black wash on the engine deck meshes; then I shot the dullcoat over it:

I noticed that frosting on the tank after awhile, so I think some of the wash in the deepest crevices was still wet. I'd thought I'd given it enough time to dry, but apparently not. That was fixed by shooting another dullcoat over this; all the frosting went away.

Later on I painted and assembled the tracks and put them on this beast and then weathered it up after cementing the upper and lower hulls together.

Here it is all completed. It went together like a dream. I'm glad to have this in my collection:

That was awesome! Wayne, thanks for hosting this Group Build and allowing me to be part of it. Thsi was a blast. It's also the first Group Build badge I've earned from here in almsot a decade! I'll go pick it up now.

Thanks again Wayne and everyone! Comments are welcome!

Thanks for that Gents...I'm going to try it soon.

I got some progress on the Invader.

Realized after that all the bombardier area in the front is going to be covered by the massive nose housing 8 x .50s...I guess this kit had the greenhouse front version earlier. Anyway, I clipped that whole area off after the pic.

That's it for now...thanks for lookin'

I've often wanted to try Silly Putty, but, where do you buy it in decent quantity?? Does it leave a 'film' or 'oily stain' on the paint underneath?

no film unless you put it under a hot lamp. i get mine at TARGET or TOYS 'R US type stores.

Agreed. I never put it under a lamp. I've been buying mine at Target; every so often when I go in there I'll pick up two or three eggs. They only sell for about a buck 99. I must have about ten or twelver eggs worth now. Some planes take a lot of Silly Putty, and sometimes I have multiple armor models to mask.

As promised Wayne, here's some more armor (and in Braille Scale too!) to keep you 'on track' and not fall into bad habits...Oops

Today I got some serious work done....

I pulled out my T-90 and started masking off the green with the Silly Putty in preparation for the second color:

This got a dark earth color; more tan than brown:

The holes in the turret Silly Putty happened because I'd forgotten to take the pic of the tan color first before I started removing the Silly Putty where the black was supposed to go.

Once this was dry; I removed the Silly Putty in the places where the black was supposed to go and then masked off the rest of the tan:

I mixed up a little "light black" using some light grey in a jar of flat black and proceeded to shoot it on the T-90:

Here's the T-90 after I removed all the Silly Putty masking:

Not bad if I do say so myself!

Finally, I shot a clearcoat on this so I can give it a wash and then decal it before I finish it:

Well, that's all for today. I'm hoping to get all that done tomorrow. If all goes well, I might be able to get this tank done. So, stay tuned everyone, and remember, comments are welcome. Thanks for looking in!

i remember building one of those as a kid; gray and green camo. IIRC it turned out well for a teenager back then. all you airplane guys are going to push me into building one. and then two. and then i might like it and i don't need another modeling interest. though i do have some a buch of helos in all scales now and a pair of promodeler 1/48 JU-52s.

Hi Wayne,

Can you mark me down for one of these please. I'll use Xtradecals to finsh it as an aircraft of 'The Black Arrows' aerobatic team.

Here's the current status (freshly cut from the sprues):

That should be interesting Rob, welcome aboard.

Here's my second Chipmunk for this build, and my sixth in total. It's an aircraft flown by Prince Charles in 1968. It's a minor conversion to T Mk 20 status, with decals from my spares box and hoem made serials.

Hope you like it.

Cheers

Hi Wayne,
Could you drop the P-40 off my list of builds for this GB please. I've decided to move onto something else.

Cheers

thanks. funny other than RR stuff i started building a lot of OTS just in the past 2 years. at the contest, i picked up a couple of CHINOOKs, a 251 (to park beside next OTS RR gun), M2A2 ( maybe to park next to SCUD) and a normal size FORD GT40 (nostalgia and very personal build from my high school days). since i now have 9 helos i best start building some.

ALRIGHTY!! Im in with an A6M2 Zero, from airfix. What can I say, Im a new Airfix Groupie!
But no aftermarket, just what's in the box.

For kit-included cocpits, there are some nice details to be found! My only gripe would be the decal-only instrument panel, as there is no other IP included to paint. But for a closed-canopy build in 1/72, its pretty good.

A black base followed with silver drybrushing, then my own mix of "aotake" green. The aotake is a mixture of green acrylic, with a touch of blue, thinned heavily with a dose of future. This lets the paint become translucent, and you can build up the layers. Once that was dry, I picked out the instrument details and gave everything a panel wash.

the kit comes with fairly decent engine detail, but .I chose to leave it as is. Those with the desire can either wire it up, or substitute a resin piece, because you are still able to see a fair amount of the engine detail once the spinner is in place

first local contest of 2016 season. entered 5 OTS and won 4 (plus two 1/35); JGSDF fuel truck, German 105, BTR-80s took thirds, LAV took a first though i thought it should have been third.

You da Man Wayne! Congrats on the wins. Your work is always fantastic, these awards are well deserved.

Here are the glamour shots of my first Chipmunk. I hope you like it. As the intent of my project was to complete one in each of the schemes offered by Airfix over the years, which is now complete, I've included a photo of all of them.

Cheers

back from vacation and can get focused again after a local contest on Saturday. didn't even take my computer.

nice work everyone. a couple of big airplanes Ray and B_one and the little Chipmunks Tony. i think the red engine covers will really add to the presentation.

Duke here is a pic of a russian T-90 in syria. note the last road wheel is tan where they took the camo down thru the road wheels. it's one of my tells when i am doing modern armor.

i did start the atomic cannon and a 37mm FLAK 43. the pins for attaching parts are small , at least one part is mislabeled and the painting and decal instructions are poor. i will probably color modulate the tractors from the cannon and the interiors of the cabs. it will be in travel mode. now if i can stay awake i will get my 105 pin washed and weathered for the contest. mayve even a small base.

interesting how much you really need to build (pre paint). i took a cutting board and one well stocked artist box and had everything i needed. i look around the bunker and i could probably have 3 complete artist boxes from all the crap i have.
