Aircraft Carrier GB 2016

Slowly plugging away here.

This was the seam I was facing as I was test fitting it.

And after gluing the bow section to the hull and using Tamiya putting and some sanding this is what it looks like now.

I laid down the deck and was using Insta-Cure supper thin glue, letting it run along the seam a few inches at a time. Looks like I will need to follow up with a gap filling super glue to fill in the seam along the deck/hull.

Have started building up the hanger deck walls and enountering fit issues here too.

Once I get the remaining walls inplaced, will have to fill in those gaps.

I did manage to easily rub off the OG paint from the clear plastic and I'm pleased with the result. I will now assembly line the rest.

Yes, Josiah, there are 16 in the kit, but, I broke the tail wings on 2 of them, so, 2 have 'already taken off' LOL

 

Ahh, makes sense, I look forward to seeing that! That's clever, being able to scrape off the paint to make canopy.

Nice work, Rob. Some of the parts on Trumpeter's clear-molded planes really are fragile no matter how careful you try to be.

If you run short of the B-25's, I've got a whole set from Tamiya, left over from when I kitbashed Hornet and Enterprise. I don't have any use for them. If I ever get around to Hornet, I'll build her from Midway, not the Doolittle raid.

But they are solid gray plastic, not clear.

 

Thanks for the offer Checkmate, I'll go with 14 of the clear ones. I can 'scratch' off the areas to reveal the clear plastic. After painting all 14, I'll need a vacation!!

Man reading this really makes me want to join after/if I finish the Arizona. Perhaps I read over it but is there an end date?

The bombers are assembled; all 14 of them! Anyway, it took far too long as far as I'm concerned, but, they are done. Now, painting will come next.

I am finally home from holidays and dusted off the Hornet. I (maybe foolishly) decided to start on the B-25 air wing. What a frustrating endeavour thus far. I have broken at least 6 of the fragile planes trying to get them off the sprues!! Every single one breaks at the left rear stab. Anyway, all but 2 will be done: 14 aircraft. The landing gear and props at 1/700 scale are so fragile that this part of the build is going to take many hours of tedious work. Not much to photograph as of yet, but, will try to get a pic tomorrow.

I have had a Revell USS Saratoga (CV-60) kit sitting on my shelf, party worked, for probably a decade... it's not a very good kit, but I'm not expecting a museum piece out of it. This will be a good excuse to finish it! 

Thanks for the comment. I have to do some work to port side aft section. I was told that section had to a slated towards the bulkhead. Post when I can.

I think you could get by with using either 5-S or 5-N for Midway.  Most sources seem to indicate 5-S [http://www.cv6.org/ship/camo-radar.htm], but there is some indication around the web that the Navy didn't like it and was already subsituting 5-N for all the camouflage measures that originally called for Sea Blue [http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=4759&start=400].

Essentially, it meant that Measure 11 became Measure 21.  

I already had colleced enough 5-S paint from Colourcoats for Enterprise before I stumbled on this particular discussion, so I opted to go with it.

Whats funny is I did the opposite, I went off a disscussion on MWS about 5N at Midway and stocked up on 5N and 5-0 from White Ensign.  I do like the lighter look of the 5S, and started using Vallero paints and really like them, so I ordered some to make 5S.  All else, I'll switch to doing the Yorktown.  I guess its 5O over 5S.  All these early war color codes are making my head spin.  PSD = I like it!

I just ordered some more goodies for my Enterprise.  I found that using the Tom's Modelworks PE set will save grief on the cranes and the tower behind the stack, and that I originally got paint for a 5N scheme, which was Santa Cruz, where I wanted Midway, which was 5S, so I ordered paint.  I was not planning to start this project until later this year, but its getting tempting to start now.  Checkmante, be prepared, I'm pretty sure I will have questions.

Nice start guys.  I'm going to need another week or so to gather supplies before I can get building.  I still don't know how I'm going to camo these tiny aircraft.  Looking forward to the challenge though.

Well I was able to get the hull gaps fixed w/ putty and sanding and got the 3 piece main decks attached to the hull. But now the Bow fwd hanger bulkheads are off and needed a lot of cutting/sanding to get them to fit I'm hoping it doesn't throw the alignment off when attaching the other walls to the decks.

 

I feel for you.  The width on the lower rear portion on my Bismark was 1/16 shorter than the upper section and the same at the bow.  I used 1/16 balsa sheet to build up the sides to make everything form true.  

Thats was good work to fix that gap shooter. I'll echo check in that i hope this is not standard for Trump. I believe they are planning on releaseing a 350 Graf Zepplin which i would not mnd getting.

A nice start to the GB guys, seems we are all off to a good start in the year.

Nice fix, Archangel; but I hope that isn't typical of Trumpeter carriers.  I've got their Lexington waiting in the wings.

I know what you mean about PE, scottrc.  I didn't use a whole lot on Enterprise, besides the rails, and they were enough trouble.  I used 1.1 quads from Paper Lab and some PE 20mm gun barrels to replace the wires that came with the kit.  Also PE radar and some AM 5" guns from Niko.  

Mostly it was kit-bashing with Tamiya's Hornet, according to Gordon Bjorklund's build log.

I'm still doing some research to determine various aspects of CV-5, particularly her weapons fitting.

Scottrc:  I built the same Enterprise from Tamiya a while back for a GB.  Maybe you've seen them, but I found a couple of threads over at ModelWarship that were really helpful. I pretty much followed Mr. Bjorklund's lead.

Starfighter Decals now also makes a set of 1/700 decals with deck markings and insignia for the airwing.  The set includes decals for all three of the Yorktown class carriers.  I thought they were very good.

Thanks for the links.  A lot of great information . There are a lot of options, I just don't know how detailed I want to get.  I built a conversion of of the Oriskany a few years ago with a ton of PE and it burned me out on 1/700 scale.  I'm hoping to respark my interest in 1/700 with this kit.
