Brisfit, now thats a new one on me. Just did a search and realised i had heard of the Bristol. Nice one, will add it to the roster. The build thread is up and running here.

Ok, I think I may need to change my entry to the 1/48 Eduard Brisfit. I have something I want to try out with the paint on a smaller scale than the SE.5a.

I know I'm going to be clawing my eyes out whenit comes to rigging, but whatever, like you said...

I'm kind of leaning toward the biplane, but maybe I should start with that and go chronologically and see how many I can get done?

I know it probably means building that plane which won't be mentioned, but are decals available for the seven Americans that flew with the RAF during the Battle of Britain?

 

 

 

Don't recall coming across decals of those pilots - likely not popular enough as none made ace status during the BoB.  I've read they only had two confirmed kills amonst the seven of them, and only one, John Haviland, would survive the battle.

Now if you have a Spitfire Vb in the stash, you'll have better luck.  There have been some decals portraying pilots from the  three American 'Eagle' squadrons.  Most recently, Aviaeology has anounced a 10 aircraft set in all four of the popular scales:

I had not realised there were American pilots flying with the RAF that werenot part of eagle Sq. It would be nice if markings could be found. Aircraft codescould be sourced, but any individual markings might be harder to find.

Jack, that company seem to be making some nice sets. I have seen their beaufigfhter ones but not come across that one.

For all those waiting for this GB, the wait will soon be over. I'll be opening the build thread first full week of Feb. Off work that week so might as well do it while i have the time. Kick off is still 1st April.

Well, I got a 1/48 Trumpy Westland Whirlwind and a De Havilland Hornet. Now to decide which one, and if AM will be involved with the build.

And yes, jack is right, its to mark the RAF being the worlds first independant Air Force. The SAAF website itself says 'The South African Air Force, the second oldest air force in the Commonwealth,'

Although the South Africans can take some credit as it was a Select Committee lead by General Smuts, which suggested the creation of an independant air force. He then wanted to do the same for SA.

I think Bish's point is of an air force being independent, that is, not part of the army or navy for example.

The SAAC wasn't independent, right in the body of the above text, states it was part of the Active Citizen Force, which was essentially a reserve pool of temporary conscripts and volunteers.

Just need to correct you though. The South African Airforce or South African Aviation Corps (SAAC) was formed in 1912:

"Although military aviation was still in its infancy at the time that the Union Defence Force (UDF) was formed, the South African Defence Act (1912) made provision for the establishment of the South African Aviation Corps (SAAC) as part of the Active Citizen Force (ACF). In August 1912 the Commandant-General of the Citizen Force, Brig Gen C.F. Beyers, was sent to England and Europe by General Smuts to observe and report on the use of aircraft in military operations.

Brig Gen Beyers was so impressed by what he saw, that when he returned to the Union, he strongly recommended setting up a school of aviation. The Government subsequently contracted Mr Cecil Compton Paterson to provide flying training to a select group of ten aviators at his flying school at Alexanderfontein near Kimberley.

Training and War

In April 1914 six of the initial ten pupils were appointed as probationary lieutenants in the ACF and sent to England to undergo further training at the Central Flying School at Upavon where five of them eventually qualified. On the outbreak of war in August 1914, the South Africans were granted permission to join the newly formed Royal Flying Corps (RFC). They were to participate in the first aerial reconnaissance and artillery spotting missions over France during the closing months of 1914."
