lol, no problem, xmas comes early for you.

The only thing I don't like about that webstore is they only ship via courier, but I guess at least that way the mail can't lose your parcel.

RiK, wow. Those are also very spectacular builds. Really rare kits put together in the hands of a very gifted builder. Well done, Sir. Well Done.

RiK, well you certainly are busy as that is a full plate of work. I appreciate your adding your quality work to this GB.

As for me, I'm still slowing pluggin away on the Kingfishers. However, due to my extremely limited time now I have stopped work on one and will focus on getting just one done at a time for now.

So here is the latest on the Kingfisher overhaul.

I have cut off the cowling in order to open the flaps and make way for a Vector R-985 resin engine. This is gonna take a great deal of work to make it fit but so far it looks promissing.

I also plan on adding in some exhaust tips to the cowling as well. I also closed up the firewall area so I could shape it to the flaps and fit the cowl back on in the same place it came off, only open now.

This is the final result of the shaping of the firewall and rounding it in for the flaps to fit over correctly.

I left the flaps attached to the cowling and simply cut them into seperate pieces. I then sanded the tips down to make them appear as thin as possible and I took a pair of PE plyers and bent them all outward which cracked the plastic on the inside. So, I simply put Tamiya thin cement on the cracks and it actually forced the flaps to stay open. This is the result.

I then turned my attention to the kit engine and cut it away with a small saw. I then used a knife to remove the left over bits and followed that up with some sanding and shaping for the correct fit to the cowl. It came out perfect.

I also began work on the Vector R-985 kit. Once I had this assembled, minus the details, I can begin work on the cowling opening and the cylinder heads to make it all fit together. The cowling is thick and I used a Dremel to thin it down as thin as I dare and I will need to remove the tips of each cylinder to make it fit. The engine will need to be set in from the front as the cowl is oblong toward the rear and the engine will never fit in from there. I plan to get it to fit, detail it out, set it in and then close the front of the cowl. This will complicate the paint, but there is no real alternative.

In this shot you can see I've thinned the cowl quite a bit and it still needs a tad more room, so the cylinder heads will get it next. They won't be seen anyway.

I have been working on the float as well. The kit part is grossly misplaced and the kit resin float will look tons better. I will get to that in the next few days and post up some more pics. More to come on this journey. Thanks for looking.

I finally started on the Mavis. I started by cutting out the flaps to show this thing on takeoff. I'm using Perfect Plactic Putty to form the flap leading edge and fill the gap at the wing trailing edge.

I'm interested in the Mavis too.

I want to build for this GB too, but I'm struggling to fit one into the schedule after some time off from the bench during the year.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Thanks guys,

The filler worked well on the flaps and wing and I started on the fuse. While the parts are drying I started on the base. I'm using my usual technique of drawing out where I want the wake on a piece of hard Styrofoam, the kind one uses for fake flower arrangements. I turned the base upside down and using a lighter I burned in random waves, I then added strips of paper using medium acrylic gel.

There is only one marking option of a IJN transport plane in NMF so I'm going with that. I can tell there are other options in the kit that are not shown in the instructions. I'm not sure why they didn't want you to be able to build diffrent versions since the parts are on the tree but there it is. Maybe a later boxing uses both. The instructions want the builder to drill out windows on the fuse sides and add tiny little windows which would have to be masked. The holes are so small that I'm just going to add a drop of future to duplicate windows. Hope it workes, it's too late to add then now. The clear parts tree also has waste blisters that are not called out on the instructions.

There aren't many parts in the kit so this shouldn't take me too long to complete.

Steve, this is a base technique that I haven't seen before. I am super curious about how it's going to turn out and whether or not it's any easier than the other method you use.

BK, I found the using a lighter looks more natural than hacking the waves out with a knife. You need to do this outside of course due to the fumes.

Brandon, liking the meticulous work you have going on there.

---------------------------

Steve, this should be another treat for us here.   For those tiny windows called to be drilled out, could you not just leave them open during the paint stage, and then afterwards use clear canopy cement to create the 'glass window' look?

regards,
Jack

I dont have any. I should be able to use the Future, if that dosn't work I look for some clear canopy cement. I usually use PVA to attach canopy's.

Also something else to try differently is the application of the clear cement (or with your future idea), and that is to use the opposite end of the brush.  I had some openings to cover over and found the bristles didn't quite do it, so turned the brush around and used the tip dipped in the liquid and was able to cover the 'window' opening quite easily.

White glue might also work, as long as it dries clear?

regards,

Jack

Working on the base, I painted greenish blue (for "shallow" water) amd added another coat of acrylic gel. I add some thinned blue tonight continue to apply acrylic gel while I work on the kit.

Here is the base after the thined blue, a spray of white for the wake and a coat of acrylic varnish. The next steps are a drybrush of white for the wave tops, and adding cotton for the wakes. Once I add the Mavis I will add cotton for the spray.

I was finally able to get some time at my bench after a couple weeks of being unable to do anything. Anyway, I got it all painted. I applied Future, and fought to get the decals on. Decals were terrible. They actually conformed really well, but they shattered if you looked at them too long. I have to repair the letters on the left side, and repaint all the letters on the right side. Besides that, I've just got some weathering, final construction, and a flat coat to go and she'll be done.

That looks pretty cool man. I have to say this is the first 109 I've ever seen with floats. Well done, even with some decal issues.

Looks really nice, Steve. I'll have to give this a go one day. I did get that new job so my time here will be very limited and I won't be around much. I'll do my best to keep up.

I'll be looking forward to both of those RK.

I worked a little on the Mavis and finished the construction. I added liquid mask to the windows and it's always worked for me before although I get a little leery if I covered everything well enough since it dries clear. I placed it on the base (not finished) for effect. I will give it a black base coat then paint it a NMF with red anti foul paint on the bottom.

Steve, the Mavis is coming along nicely. And I didn't realize just how small this whole thing was until I see it next to the Tamiya glue. WOW, that makes it just that much more impressive.

Thanks BK,
RK that Cant Z is going to be cool. You like Italian AC the way I like Japanese AC. I don't have much of a collection though.

I sprayed the black and the Alclad White Aluminum. While that was drying I started to add the cotton to the wakes to form the waves. I will add some more cotton to the troughs as soon as this dries.

The base isn't quite dry but I wanted to see if everything lined up. Yep it does. Tomorrow I'll work on the red anti-foul paint to the planes hull and maybe get to the decals and canopy unmasking.

RiK, that is a super cool kit. I may be wanting to add some of those to my stash. Looking forward to seeing this one come together.

Steve, stellar work so far. This is coming along nicely and I love how it looks so much bigger than it really is. Well done.

Thanks BK,

I painted the red anti foul hull paint and applied the Future for the portholes. It seemed to work well and I'll add another drop tonight. The liquid mask worked well as usual. I forgot about the anti-glare black in front of the windscreen but can get that and hopefully to the decals tonight as well.

After applying the decals and a little weathering I attached the plane to the base and added some spray using cotton. I then sprayed Future to the cotton and will let that dry. I can then trim and form it a little more. I also added some more acrylic varnish to the water to deepen the look of the water. One of the wing decals broke while weathering but fortunately the kit come with extras.
