2024 Kits on deck / in process / completed

got the wings, sponsons, and tail parts assembled and sanded. getting ready to assemble
and paint the cockpit.
if you want permission for a test flight.... the answer is "no".
Here are some progress pics of my Kingfisher. I just need to wrap up the wheels and decals and she's done. I am actually impressed with the quality of the kit while it does lack cockpit detail. The date says its from 1984 so well see how the decals go!
Looking awesome jack! Keep up
the great work!
invertman, looks good. It's coming along nicely.
Jacknewbill, the kingfisher is looking great. It's coming together super fast. AND I love the tri-color paint scheme.
Here is my completed 1/72 MPC Kingfisher. As you can see I decided to go with the three color paint scheme. The decals were a bear as expected (old and thick so they curled badly). Once I was done it just looked to clean for me so I added a small amount of weathering and I think all in all she came out looking pretty good for a $5 swap shop find. Thanks again for letting me join in so late and I look forward to watching the thread moving forward!
From one Jack to another, have to say that is some rather excellent work on that Kingfisher.
regards,
Jack
I agree. This one turned out super nice given the kit and size, it looks stunning. Simply well done all around. I'll update the front page.
Well, as usual progress is slow. I have the floats installed and it's starting to look like a Kingfisher. I am currently adding the rear radio equipment and gunners seat. I will turn my attention to putting on the canopy and arials then the rear horizontal stabs.
On the second KF kit I have going I have decided to not fight the resin float again and I will be building that one as a wheeled version; most likely a yellow wing or silver version. I like the idea of having both versions sitting side by side and it will speed the build up tremendously. Well, I'm off for a bit. Thanks for coming along.
Well, I quit the second job as it just took up too much time. So, now I can work on the kits more. That being said, I've made some great progress on the KF and it is actually starting to resemble one. I call that a win. I only have a few more bits and some priming is in order. With luck I can start paint this weekend.
That Fisher is coming along nicely BK!
Confirm it only colses mid this year?
If so I am in with a 1/48 ancient tamiya Rufe..
Theuns
Yes, I'm planning on running this until the end of June at this point. Many of us have things yet to be completed and need the extra time. SO, bring on that Rufe.
Ta , will post pix a little later
This will be a very simple oit the box build, nothing special.
I added maskingtape belts and gave it all some shadow with a pin wash.

I also sanded down the raised detail on the float and re-scribed.

Sofar the dryfit of major parts is not bad atall for a kit of 1970's era

Looks good, Thuens. That reminds me of my zero build. Might be the same basic kit for all I know. It went together with no issues as well and it was an old kit also. I'm looking forward to seeing this one build up.
I've been working on the Kingfisher alot lately trying to get the first one done. I finally settled on a scheme and then it dawned on me that I have to lay a star decal inside of the support struts for the outer floats. OOOOFFF !!! That is gonna be really hard as the decal is larger than the area the struts take up. I thought the paint work was gonna be a pain on this due to the floats but those underwing decals are gonna test me for sure.
The surface detail was a little bland to my taste, even for a simpe quick build

So I added rivet detail.

The rivit detail is a very nice touch. The kit is looking very nice and you are moving along quite quickly too.
Got the IJN grey on, shading just about bleeding through.
It is a tad greener than in the pix

Hey guys,
i had a bad accident with the dornier
last Night as I was cleaning my airbrush I dumped my jar of laquer thinner on my model and ruined it. It ate into the fresh paint and the plastic
pretty much a write Off.
looks like I’ll be bowing out of the build unless I find something else.

Well, we've all had one of those things happen in one way or another. Sorry to hear that it is a total loss. Sounds like some spare parts for the box and on to another kit. You are always welcome to join in if something comes along.
Typical of tamiya decals these were thick and dont seat into the detail well :-(

Thuens, that is the same issue I had with my Zero. I want to start painting my insignias whenever possible, but I tried on the Kingfisher and it turned out awful. I sanded them off and will be using decals instead. I need to research a better way to spray those on.
Your work is looking good and coming along nicely.
I was just pondering this same issue on a kit I am decaling now. There has to be a product that works better than micro-sol and micro set. What other products do you guys use for breaking down the decals to make them mold to the panel lines, rivets etc? I am willing to give anything new a try.
I completed my Rufe over the weekend but need to wait for decent light outside to be able to take pix with my cell phone camera :-(
Will post as soon as I have done so.
Jack, those products are the most commonly used. The main issues most of us have with decals not settling down are caused by a rough surface which causes silvering, or thicker decals that just won't/can't settle down into the finer details of some kits. Tamiya is one of those that have good decals, but they tend to be thick and thus you lose detail with them. There are stronger products out there but they come with drawbacks. They can melt decals and sometimes even harm the finish. Some of the aftermarket decal makers have very high quality products that settle down very nicely into detail. Most of the issues you have with losing details with decals is the decals themselves. I will sometimes use a knife to cut panels lines in on decals that won't settle down, but for rivits there just isn't much you can do. This loss of detail is the main reason you see some modelers paint the insignias on instead of using decals.
