Great progress GM!

I got a wee bit of time to work on models this morning. Its getting close to finished.

Lots of little details

The first coat of paint on the airwing.  This will take a few weeks to complete.  All those tiny wheels and then the tail stripe decals. Trumpeter was generous with the Wildcats.  I might put a few on the Enterprise since the set I got for it didn't offer a lot. 

Outstanding, GM.  That is one huge hull!

And that will be interesting to see, lewbud, since I have one in the stockpile.  Looks like a good kit with some resin parts. . .but those wing corrugations!

I'm building Valom's TBD for the 1942 GB.  That may take a while.

Thanks guys for the nice comments.  I have plans for the Sara to replace much of the old details with photo etch and nicer parts from my spares stash, and then repaint it.  I ended up keeping a few old 1/700 ships from my early years, along with a disco shirt or two, that I plan to do this with.  At $30+ a pop for a new kit, this can save me some $$$.

That's impressive, Scott--first, that you still have the kit from the '70's.  Most of mine from that era went the way of disco.

And, second--I think Sara still looks good; you did a nice job building her.

And, of course, good work with the current Lex; I like what I see!

I thought I'd pull out my old Fujimi Saratoga I built back in the 1970's as a kid and put it next to the Lexington.  A big difference in detail between kits. 

Started fitting out the island and added the fighting top this morning before I went to work.  A lot of detail in this kit.

Still:  the Lex is looking mighty fine.

Although it doesn't look like much has been done, I did get all the guns built up and installed over the weekend.  The ladders from the flight deck down to the gun galleries were a bugger, the instructions had the gun galleries installed much earlier and then  the instructions called to install the ladder, the ladder ended up being too short.  Had to make new ones from styrene.

Those figures look awsome.

Great progress here! I finally got some time and made a dent in my build.

These are old Series 77 90MM figs.

I am doing them as the CO and signalman on USS Phelps (DD-360) during the battle.

Long way to go yet..but its a start.

I bought a few different types to have on hand for future naval projects.  

I really thought hard about getting those Check, but I already was about halfway through my assembly process on the kits guns.  The Blue Ridge guns do look more to scale.  

I'm enjoying watching your builds, Scott and GM.  

And your confusion only reassures me that I'm not alone.

For 1/700 weaponry, I've found these useful.  Blue Ridge has a nice range of different armament, and they come in one piece!

OOPs I just realized something. Colors listed are for CV-8, not CV-2. I'm building both at once, my mistake.

For CV-2 it's blue on blue.

I swear, I'll end up gluing the deck of one on the other...

 

I feel for ya, with both of us building multiple carriers at the same time, what possible could go wrong?  I'm just glad I got the Enterprise to the point all it needs is the aircraft finished. I would go bannnas having to paint both these carriers at the same time.  The two blues are close enough I was sure to get something mixed up.

20's at the top, 5" at the bottom, 1.1's at the right and 50's across the middle.

At 1/350. Those things would kill me at 1/700.

I assume that the receivers and barrels on the smaller caliber stuff would be black, and the pedestals would be ship color. The 5"'s would be overall ship color.

This part of the ship is 5-O, with 20-B deck. Which color were the gun mounts?

 

 

The Quads are the little buggars that are having fit problems.  5" went together pretty good. Far as colors, at 1/700, 5N with a wash of flat black should suffice  for me.

Don't forget to swap islands if you do.....

You could make the argument that vertical surfaces would be 5-0 and horizontal surfaces would be 20-B in the tubs other than the 5's. The mounts for the 20's and 1.1's would probably be 5-0. The 5's were in the sponsons, so would assume they would be 5-0 overall.  Just a guess on my part on all of the above.
