I'll admit, I too have popped open the Eduard box a few times to look at the Sopwith Camel.   In fact, went as far as to even pre-order their upcoming SE.5A Wolseley Viper because of another interesting Canadian ace - William Gordon Claxton.

While flying for 41 Squadron, he would achive 37 victories in 79 days.  Making him their highest scoring ace, only to be captured and become prisoner a few months before the conflict ended.

regards,

Jack

This looks like a fun GB to participate in.  Although I have a rule to build what is in my stash, which for this GB might be a 1/32 SE5.  I would also think it would be a treat to build a Typhoon and F35 in the Battle of Britain or 100th aniversary colors, or one of each.

That's a good rule to have, and one I'm doing my best to follow. I am at least trying for a build one/buy one rate, so I don't grow it too much. I did finally go through and purge it this past weekend, tossing the kits I had as a kid that were missing parts, had broken parts, or were otherwise in an unbuildable state.

-BD-

Brandon, did you scavenge them for ordnance and drop tanks before binning them?  I don't normally hang stuff on the wings, but I save them and when the box is full it goes to the club auction.

For the most part, no, simply because the kits I had didn't have ordnance worth scavenging. I did keep some torpedoes, but things like the bombs for teh AMT/ERTL A-20G Havoc were largely featureless, and I realized that if I am going tohang something off a model I'm building now, chances are that either the model comes with better ordnance, or I'll source it from the aftermaket. I kept a few drop tanks as well.

The main things I kept were the clear parts, propellers and decals. As a kid, I had a bad habit of building, getting to the painting stage, and never quite finishing. And at the time, I put the clear parts on at the end, so most of them are in pristine, never-used condition.

Oh man, French markings! I didn't realize that plane in those markings existed. Now I need to source one and buy a new Airfix Hurricane.

Brandon - you're welcome to the decal sheet if you like  . . . There are two very similar options.

Send me a PM and I'll shoot them off to you.

Chris

Awesome, thank you so much! PM inbound. Sorry for the delayed response - it's been a crazy couple of weeks getting the house ready for the lady to move in, and setting up my workbench in the garage (yay for no more airbrushing on the floor!)

Ye, thats one i prety much stick to as well, and if i break it its usually for a kit i was planning to buy anyway. And i seem to be building quicker than i am buying at the minute, so i don't mind now and again.

Bish,

Please put me down for a 1/32 Hase Spit MK V. Probably the non-clipped wing version.

I've had that kit for 20 years, probably time I built it. Plus it's my wifes secong favorite plane after the Mustang Hmm

Bossman

Hi Bish,

I'm thinking that this GB may need a single engine WWII fighter - so there's really only one choice - right ?

Please count me in with this one:

Of course this is only the kit . . . She'll have RAF markings - and most likely - she won't be set up as a tropical version.

Pardon my ignorance - but what is the significance of the red crab on all the badges ?

Can i take that as an offical entry scott. I am guessing the SE 5 is a Wing Nut Wings kit.

That Typhoon in BoB markings looks real nice. And i was hoping we would have an F-35 kit by now to do a RAF version, thats assuming the goverment don't change their mind again.

Thanks Chris! I've been looking at the new Airfix 1/48th kits for sometime in the future. As to now I just bought four tank kits as Christmas gifts for myself and I've been trying to stop buying so much stuff.

Theuns, Kitsworld has 3 decal sets for 48th Fortress III's if you wanted to take that option. One is for a Bomber Command aircraft the other 2 Coastal Command.

Afraid the Lynx would not fit as they are not flown by the RAF, only Army and Navy.

I have the B-17 g kit but no decals for it, I also think to try give soem "feel" to such a large area of model in either only green or bare metal might be difficult for me. I like the way that the RAF Bommber Command's colours look on the 17, even Costal command had a few, that might also be an option.

I have some RAF decals I can use to make up a scheme, even if the Sqn dodes are made up.

A mate is also bringing me a 1/48 Airfix Lynx I might add to the GB if there is time. The only other RAF stuff I have is a 1/32 WnW SE5 and a 1/24 Airfix Tiffy but those are long term builds :-)

I am thinking of a 1/48 B-17 g old revell kit in RAF colours....;-)

That would be nice. I have an Academy 17C to do as a Fortress I, if i remember right, the G was known as the Fortress III. Would be nice to see that.

Those are fantastic looking Hurricanes Chris!

Gotta admit I've done a dozen or so of that unmentionable RAF fighter and have about a dozen more in the stash but not one Hurricane... Embarrassed

Nice one jack. That gives us a spread from  WW1 to fairly recent. Going to have to check those links, they seem like some amazing pilots.

And good to see the Commonwealth being represented. We would have been pretty stuck without them. There was a Canadian pilot at RAF Odiham who flew Chinooks when i was there, he was a bit of a character.

Hi Bish, put me down for a Sopwith Camel, an Eduard 1/48 kit.

---------------------

I haven't decided on the markings yet, but it will be of a Canadian pilot flying for a British unit:

Raymond Collishaw

- 2nd highest scoring Canadian ace (60)

- top RNAS ace

Donald Roderick MacLaren

- 3rd highest  "   "   "   (54)

- also most victories for a Camel pilot

William George Barker

- 4th highest  "  "   "   (50)

- most decorated Canadian

- flew most successful airframe (serial no. B6313), logging more than 379 hours of flight time and 46 victories

regards,

Jack

No worries Bossman, got it added.

Do you mean the scale or the subject.

Oh - definitely the scale - I'm mostly a 1/72 guy.

My build shelves are about a 50/50 ratio of RAF and USAF.   The Hurricane is a favorite of mine.

Theuns, indeed they have. The two regiments which merged in 59 to form the one i spent most of my time in were both at Spion Kop. And to think just 14 years later we were fighting side by side.

Cool, we Saffers like to give "the colonialists" a hard time , just recall the Anglo Boer war where a colony of "farmers" kept 500 000 British soldiers busy ;-)

If my long past grandfather knew I was on speaking trems with the "English" he would turn in his grave! His father was a "guest" at St. Helena courtecy of His Magisty.

How things have changed :-)
