Thanks Dwayne, got a bit further with some gloss white on the 190:

And the first bits of colour on the VW, not a great photo though

I had hoped to have this done this weekend, but one of my 3 day migrains set in and that ended that. So, anyway, here is where I sit. The decals are done and the flat coat is one and pin washed. I have some small paint work to do and a touch more weathering, then final assembly. I will have this done in time, hopefully this week. Fingers crossed.

Looking really good, BK!  I like that camo scheme.  Sorry about the migraine.  You are very near the finish line.

Panel line wash is done on my 109, so just need to flat coat and a few finishing details, like putting the tail wheel back on since I managed to knock it off while wiping down the back wings.  Seems like a kit isn't done until I knock something off.  LOL.

LA, the 190 looks to be ready for some camo. And I'm curious what color the VW is going to be. Those two are going to look really good together.

SilentBob: your job is crisp and excellent, with a very nice mottling. You made your shelf and yourself happy. And indeed the kit is a joy to build. One question, should the number (7) cover the smaller (blue) stencil on the starboard site, or vice versa?

Dwayne: nice little 109 you made. Mottles can be tricky on such scales. Sometimes (when I am lazy usually) I have experimented with pastels over a flat coat with a cropped-hair thin brush.

Brandon: your painting is very nice and your squiggles are totally amazing! You should indulge in this PITA, you surely motivated me in trying it out on a 1/72 He-111 in the very near future. RLM guys were nuts!

John: That's a sheer joy to watch, I consider these paint works to be the most difficult of all, with all these definite lines & colors. If that was a 2 seater it would be a lady catcher on a Saturday night Wink

lostagain: you are a really thorough builder, this is smooth as silk!

On with the build, at a drunken snail's pace, I applied a coat of clear gloss and started applying decals. Since I have apparently become rusty/carelles, I destroyed the port  balkenkreuz (part of which was stuck on the fuselage irreversibly) as well as the corresponding swastika (I had my day of wrath with the German insignia), so I used some aftermarket decals available as replacements.

Zvezda, your 190 is looking sharp!  Lovely decal work.

So I am calling my 109 done.  Here are the pics:

Rooster, thank you for hosting the group build.  This was a fun kit for a great subject.  There are some goofs, but for my skill level and experience, and am overall pretty pleased with how this came out.  I like the first pic, the 3/4 view for the done picture on the front page.

Dwayne, the 109 looks great. Certainly got a great result with a tiny kit, could not believe it is 1/72. Nice level of weathering and very fine framing on the cockpit.

Zvezda, I like the mottle effect you have got going there. Great finishing on your 190, looking forward to the weathering stages.

Brandon, super work with a difficult scheme. The squiggles have come up so well. Hope the migraine stays well away.

I have been getting some more colour down. I got the first colour coat onto the 190, but it is not intense enough and definitely not glossy enough. I will have to sand it down a bit and recoat with a thinner coat.

On the Beetle, the green coat went on nicely, but when I took the tamiya tape off the orange, it has attacked the paintwork and I am not sure how to proceed. I left the orange to dry for six days before putting the tape on too. You can see it in the top photo, very frustrating.

Dwayne: Excellent result, I love it

LA: I often stick and remove the tapes several times on a clean surface, to weaken their adhesive capacity. Where is the damage exactly (it is not clearly shown in the photo)?

Dwayne, well done, Sir! That came our superb. It looks like a larger scale than it is. How some of you guys make those 72nd kits look so good amazes me.

LA. I am truly intrigued in the scheme you have going on there. I can't recall ever seeing colors like that. Looks great in the photos, I can't see any issues.

Thank you, gentlemen, for the very kind words.  I will say that the Eduard canopy mask was worth every penny!

LA - Loving the colors.  I have not tried for a smooth gloss on any of my kits yet, so not sure what to suggest.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Some brief update on the butcher bird. Decals, gloss/flat clear coats, landing gears & wheels, engine cooling fan, propeller & hub, 500kg bomb & rack, were completed. Didn't have time to take proper WIP photos, will post some tomorrow.

From the start I wanted to use the BR21 rockets. There was no way I could properly cement and align the provided plastic mounting struts and place them on the corresponding holes of the wings, so I resorted to these  electrical resistance sets. Their wires are neither too soft nor too hard so it allows a degree of flexing and adjustmnent.

I replaced each plastic strut with an equal lenght's wire strut. Next they will be painted  RLM76.

The whole procedure took approximatelly 3 hours (I am slow Embarrassed).

Okay, gents and ladies, I am calling this one complete. What a wonderful kit and so easy to build. The painting may put you in therapy, but it's worth it. After all the fuss I am pleased with the results.

I want to thank everyone for coming along with me on this one, it was fun. I appreciate the opportunity to be welcomed in this GB.

Thanks for looking and commenting.

After a long session up until 6 in the morning, this build is proclaimed finished. I admit this kit was tough, there were no easy phases during construction (for my skill level at least). The result has several blemishes which I had not time or courage to correct, but the overall experience was challenging and most of all, FUN.

Many thanks to all fellow builders for the eye candy and inspiration and a special big thank you to our Gruppenkommandeur and host, Rooster. Here are some photos of the finished kit.

Hey Brandon, that is a great result on the 152, such a great finish on a difficult scheme. Super impressive control on the slashes across the standard camo.

Zvezda, first, how do you stay up to 6 in the morning? To maintain concentration through the night is a feat in itself!

The 190 looks fantastic, nice muted colours, good exhaust staining and cool mottling. The wire supports for the rockets were well worth the effort. The model has come up really well.

My painting has continued, a second coat has gone on to deepen the colour. I am happy with my mix for the Jager orange - it looks a touch lighter in real life.

The gloss surface should be good for the decals

Here is a look at the Beetle, trying to show the tape marks on the orange engine hood. BTW, this is the same orange as above, different camera settings makes it look much lighter.

Decals next!

Zvezda - I don't see any problems from where I'm sitting. The decals and paint look top notch! Really great build and thanks for taking part in the GB!

P.S. Can you give me the info on that kit again. I seemed to have missed adding you to the front page. Sorry about that.

Thanks for the kind comments guys.

LA: a big cup of Jack D... eeeh, coffee and Motorhead's discography playing overnight can work miraclesSmile

Rooster, you have properly listed me, only you used my name (Kostas) instead of nickname. Kit is Eduard 1/48 FW-190 A-8 (Weekend Ed.)

If you dont mind, please use this photo as a front page (a small collage)

Again great many thanx for this awesome GB. It should definitelly have a sequel (Pride of the LWFE reloaded, maybe with participants building pairs, one Messer and one Butcher bird each)

Sorry for the late response Zvzeda. I got you added to the front page. I really like that collage. I'd definitely like to do another one of these. I was thinking it could be a series of sorts where a different Luftwaffe aircraft is showcased. Maybe the Stuka will be next...

Nice montage shot of a great model Zvezda.

Rooster, just to show I made the finish line on time, here are a couple of shots of my finished FW 190 Jager, with its acompanying Beetle.

I will take some proper shots on the weekend to put up the front.

I still had issues with gloss paints not going solid, even after leaving them for up to a week. This has meant there are a number of finger prints marring what was otherwise a good finish, but I had to pick it up at some point. Trying to use cotton or nitrile gloves leaves an imprint too.

Decals were from Studio 27, and were well printed, the white was very opaque, but as soon as they went down they stuck hard, which led to a couple of bad words...
