Every time I see a post for this GB I reach for my Betty and have to slap my hand away. Too much on the bench.

Ah hah! So your build is where I saw the AVI Models logo Jack!

Cool, another Claude.

I built an AVI Claude for last year's group build.  It requires some work as they are short run kits, not really at the standard most modern kits are these days.

Speaking of the Claude, another new manufacture has one coming up in 1/72 scale - amazing amount of detail for that size:

Jack

Bsyamato: Cool! I have some decals by Rising but not sure I've heard of AVI Models. Did one of your earlier models come from them? I'll put you down with it now.

Bsyamato: Looking good, you are making real progress there!

@bsyamato,

Great job on the scratch built details on the cayuse! Kudos to you for adding these deatails, and making this build look like a quarter scale kit.

@Edwin,

You detailed the engine beautifully, and it looks great inside the cowl. Your pilot looks great too.

@DD,

Good start on the Zero. I looking forward to seeing this build progress.

@Nick,

As I've seen your amazing Zero builds, I'm really looking forward to see what you do with a Raiden.

Hi DD!

Looks like you’re off to a good start Yes.

I love 1/32 scale, so much more details and possibilities. However I just don’t have the space for them. I’m just hanging on to 2 1/32 kits from my old stash from ages ago: Hasegawa’s BF109E and Spitfire mk VB.

I don’t bother with ejector marks that can’t be seen either.

Gamera, how’s your mecha godzilla coming along?

Bsyamato, Edwin, DD: Those all look fantastic guys!!!!

DD: There is a article online, I don't remember where I found it but I printed it out showing modifications to make the Zero more accurate. Seems Tamiya's kit is about 90% accurate but his article takes it the rest of the way. That's what happened to me, I got bogged down changing stuff and never finished the kit. It builds into a fantastic model without the modifications and is fine building her straight from the box. Just thought I would point it out for you.

03 March 2019 – Got some work done on the Zeke over the weekend, although not much. Mainly just some general painting of large areas, and small parts that are still on the sprues. My usual attack plan for just about any model is to read the instructions (duhhh!!); look for all the parts that are gonna be the same color, and assemble those before painting (if at all possible); spray-paint those parts; if the parts are very small, leave those on the sprues so they can be easily handled, and spray-paint them; set all the freshly-painted parts aside to dry, and then start assembling all the parts that don’t need paint before assembly, such as horizontal stabilizer halves, wings (most of the time), wheel halves, etc.

Saw all these ejector pin holes, and got kinda worried, as Tamiya usually doesn't leave these kind of things in their kits. But, once I looked a little closer and studied the instructions, the holes will not be seen once everything is assembled. Whew!!

Got some Interior Green and Aluminum (or aluminium, depending upon your worldly location) sprayed, as per the instructions and based on some photos of an actual unrestored A6M5 that I found on-line.

Sprayed all of the small parts that needed Interior Green while they were still on the sprues - makes it much easier to paint them. I hope I got them all!

I’ll be starting a Work In Progress build here on Tamiya’s 1/32nd Mitsubishi A6M5 Model 52 Zero, which the Allies code-named the “Zeke” during WWII.

I bought this kit back in the middle of 2018 from Hobby Link Japan, as they had the best deal that I could find. I paid about $70 US, including shipping, for this kit. Anywhere else was right at $100, NOT including shipping fees. So, do your research when you wanna buy anything on-line.

I already had (and still do!) the P-51D, Supermarine Spitfire Mk. VIII, and the Chance Vought F4U-1A Corsair in 1/32nd from Tamiya, and wanted the Zero to go along with them. But, now that I had all four of them, which do I build first? I wanted to start the Corsair first, but, with that being my favorite aircraft of all time, and wanting to do a bang-up job on it, and not having built one of Tamiya’s newest 1/32nd scale kits before, I was kinda leery on building it first with no experience on the Tamiya 1/32nd line. Then I saw that a Japanese Group Build was starting up on FineScale Modeler’s website, so that helped me make my decision. The Zeke will be first!

Here’s a photo of the box art. The box isn’t as big as you’d think for a 1/32nd scale aircraft kit. Out of the four Tamiya 1/32nd scale kits that I have, it’s the smallest. I’d guesstimate that it’s about 12″ x 14″, which isn’t too big.

This is an insert that covers everything in the box. It’s designed to become a protective barrier/holder for the completed build so that you can use the original box in which to transport the plane, or store it indefinitely. The seams that you see in the insert are to allow the insert to be folded to fit the fuselage and wings of the plane; you then put it all back in the box, and close the box up with the original top. Pretty ingenious, if you ask me.

Here’s whatcha see once you remove the insert. All parts are nicely packaged in plastic wrapping, and everything is packed in such a way as to protect the parts from damage. The clear parts are well-protected. There are lots of small parts, including metal springs and hinges. Tamiya even includes a Phillips screwdriver to help with the assembly. Ain’t that nice of them.

Wow! A lot of parts. I wish I had laid something next to them to give an idea of the scale. The main landing gear has many separate parts, to include the oleo struts with metal springs so that they have a realistic “bounce” to them, plus they are designed to retract, just like the real thing. Same for the tail wheel, but no spring for it. The tires are rubber as well.

The instruction manual (yep, I said “manual”) is relatively thick. It’s 32 pages, including a couple of pages of very nice detailed photos of three different Zeros on display at different air museums around the world (albeit black-n-white photos). I have the Squadron “Zero In Action” book at home, so that should be enough for reference photos. Really looking forward to getting started on this build. Hope y’all enjoy the build. Hope to have an update very soon.

Bsyamato: Looks good! I too love the copper sheet seats.

Edwin: I know what you mean, but then again when I get a free weekend I still don't seem to get much done.

Thanks Gamera and BSYamato.

BSYamato, the seats you made from copper sheet and wire look really good! Should look great once they’ve been painted.

Today it’s been more sanding of the gear doors for me. They’re done now. Hope to get the cockpit into the fuselage and wings assembled this weekend.

Wish I could have more bench time. This 4 letter word (W-O-R-K) keeps getting in the way Angry

A little update on the slight progress made Smile

Completed the engine.  Added some wire details, just a simplified version so as not to look too messy.  Plus it's simpler! Stick out tongue

Engine glued in the cowling:

Got my pilot painted up.  This is just prior to clear coating:

He looks fat from the waist down Stick out tongue but once he's seated in the cockpit, it shouldn't be too obvious Big Smile.

Just got him clear coated an hour ago.  Will add the Japanese flag decal to his right sleeve tomorrow and some pin wash in the creases of his flight suit as well as to enhance details.  Hope nothing goes wrong!

This model's gear doors are made for gears down.  As my Zero will be posed in flight, had to cut up the attachment points of some of the doors and make some of the door parts from sheet styrene.  Here we have a combination of kit parts, sheet styrene and putty:

Almost there with the sanding:

Bought a clear 6mm acrylic rod which will become the support for the Zero in flight.  Figuring out the best attachment point for this.  Initially wanted to have the mounting point at the aft part of the lower wing half, but seems like the fuel tank once mounted, does not allow for sufficient space for the rod there Sad.

Got to look for suitable materials for the base this weekend.  This is FUN!!! Big Smile

How's everyone coming along with their builds?

Heres the first works on the OH-6J:

Modified the floor to make it planar and reinforced with plastic unde. Added wires to the Ip and main pieces to the cockpit

Glued doors, fixed with some stretched sprues and glued clear parts

Upper windows need some filling . At the next!
