And be sure to use FLAT yellow.  The glossy stuff covers terribly and takes ages to dry.  Good luck on your Magnum helo!  Yes

Shucks. Already invested in the "regular" x-8 yellow.  At least it's not the clear gloss yellow.  Hoping not to eat my words. Huh?

Thanks for the heads up,  G

It's actually a nice day in my neck of the woods today so i knocked off of work an hour early and stopped by the hobby lobby. They actually had white tamiya primer in stock so I snatched it up.

I love Tamiya white primer. It's become my go-to for just about everything.

You should be fine with the 'regular' yellow over the primer.Yes

Well I had good intentions for the weekend but the weather didn't really hold out for bench time.  Had about 80 degrees and sun.  I was counting on rain to be able to "get to da choppa" but it wasn't so. On the bright side I built a power wheels for my daughter which was rewarding itself.

When I plan out next steps, in my head they only take 15 or 20 minutes, then in reality it takes an hour and a half. I think that happened this weekend too.

Sharing a small update anyway.

Since I last posted I primed most of the remaining parts and painted the chopper's interior.

Just a little progress.

Maybe by this time next week I'll have some yellow down...

Should only take 15 or 20 minutes.  Big Smile

Well, you did get something done!!!

Same boat here, it's been so hot I don't really feel like doing anything. I come home from work, turn on the A/C and end up with a book or movie for the rest of the evening.

Ted, that has an all-too-familiar ring to it.Big Smile

Mine is usually "I've got two small parts to make and add; a half-hour, tops."

Four or five hours later....

Just remember...any progress gets you closer to the finish line. But it's not a race, so speed doesn't always help.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

I haven't really masked much in the past.  One model I did a few years ago required some masking and well, it looks good from a good 5 to 10 feet.  It was my first attempt but I'm keeping at it.  It'll be interesting to see what kind of shape the canopy is in when it's time to pull off the mask.  Hopefully it's an improvement over the first attempt.

Interior and canopy are installed, masked, and yellow applied:

Every so often during this build I laugh at how very "egg" this model is.  I actually dropped it yesterday.  No yolk (no joke either) but one of the skids broke off.  No real damage but it sure got my attention.

I'm glad I used white primer, by the way.  So thanks for that tip!

When you mask for the other colors, after you burnish the edges of the tape shoot a coat of clear to seal the edge.  Should prevent any bleed under the tape.

Looking good so far

Thanks.

I'm hoping to get an hour of bench time today. I have most of the mask applied for the yellow stripes.  There seem to be 1 or 2 spots that look like good candidates for bleed.

Any thoughts about spraying more yellow after burnishing instead of clear as an attempt to stop bleed? I assume either way, clear or yellow, application should be pretty light.

I appreciate everyone's feedback. Thank you.

Should do as well or better. Anything that seals those unseen gaps!

Wow, thanks for the quick replies!  I have to whip together a potato salad (noteworthy because I make it with hard boiled eggs Eats) but after I'm going to try to seal up the masks before guests arrive.

Goldhammer- any progress on your panther?

Ted: You've probably already sprayed her by now but I like to use Future to seal masks.

GH: Sounds good, hope you had a safe trip.

Yep, good w/e, but lost the power converter (had 120 to coach but it quit charging the house batteries on Sat. night. Looks like around $400 or so to replace that little item. They were flat on Sunday morning. At least the isolator still lets a charge go to the ouse batts when it's goingdown the road. To top it off the rear suspension compressors wouldn't run to inflate the air bags.  No axles on the rear, just bogies and bags, so she came home dragging her tail....think a half ton p/u with 3 tons in the bedEmbarrassed.   Found a blown fuse this morning on the bag circuit, but don't know what caused it to blow.  Replacing with a circuit breaker for future.  Spending a week in it middle of next month, so got some things to get back in shape.  She has been sitting for the past few years...1978 GMC 26 footer.

Tell me about $$$$$.  About 3K in all new brakes except for the hard lines, front bearings, ball joints, water pump and alternator.

Replaced the fuse and seems to be ok for now, think I found the converter issue.  Went to pull the box and it was unplugged from the 120 circuit.  Here is the rolling money pit/nightmare.  Bags down in this pic.

end of hi-jack, back to regular programming.Big Smile

Well "fooie"  Painted the Panther with MM acrylis "hot pink pearl"  darn thing came out morre of a wine color.  Got to get a pink floresant me thinks to get the effect I want.....oh well, will make a run to HL on Sat. when I have to go over to Home Depot for a box of electrical outlets for the house remodel.

On a brighter side got the Sherman together and in primer.  Pics of all next week when I get the camera downloaded and everything sorted out from the trip.  If you search "WAAAM" in Hood River you will see where we were this past w/e.  Went through 2 sets of batteries in the camera.

Goldhammer, I'm looking forward to seeing the pink panther.  Sounds great.  I bet you can guess what song I have stuck in my head now.

I made some progress.  It's a ways off but I'm looking forward to painting Easter eggs next year.

Big Smile

I think I got a little excited and removed the canopy mask too early.  I'm thinking maybe I should have waited until after a clear coat?

That looks great.  For the edges of the canopy try a toothpick to scrape off the paint back to the edge.

Picked up new color tonight rather than this weekend.

GH: Don't worry about the thread hijack, sounds really frustrating. I don't think there are any sort of car repairs that are cheap anymore- I can imagine the 3K is only a start on getting your camper back in action. Good luck my friend!

On a happier note good luck with the Panther- I really like the idea. Looking forward to seeing her and the Sherman.

Ted: Wow!!! Looks great! Yeah, I think I've have left the masking on the canopies since you're going to have to remask them for the final clearcoat. Still super nice work there! I agree with GH, any paint on the clear areas you can use a toothpick to remove.

Wowie zowie, Ted, your 'loached egg' (sorry, couldn't resist!) looks great!

As long as all your following coats are gloss, removing the mask shouldn't be a problem.

HEY!  I wonder.....is it too late to join in on this silliness?  I suggested to my son (who I am getting into this wonderfully addictio.....hobby....that we build the same kit at the same time, and let him choose.  He immediately said "one of those egg plane things", and he picked a couple of ospreys.

We are waiting on delivery of them, but I think he would really enjoy being a part of this group build!

As I am reading through this whole thread, I come across your post, and I shout to myself...."I hope he is planning to paint that Panther pink!"  Lol. I am so glad that it the place you are taking that bad Boy!

Here is a tip from the automotive custom paint world...if you want to put a pink pearl finish on it, painting it with your pink color first, as a base coat and follow up with a pearl coat.  The white pigment in the pink paint will just swallow up your pearl, so it needs to be put on in the same manner as a "tri-coat white pearl" as seen on many caddilacs and other "high end" white cars...

I canthink wait to see that panther!
