The X-Files Group Build Proposal (Canceled)
Posted by GAF on Monday, January 11, 2021 7:08 PM

I want to believe!

This is a suggestion for a group build that's out there.  Build an aircraft (or vehicle) that did not get out of the prototype stage, or at least only a few were made. This could include the Valkyrie, the YF-12, the N-9M Flying Wing, the X-15, the NF-104A, YF-23, etc. Heck, even the Wright Flyer was experimental at one time!  I've expanded it to include experimental vehicles of all types.

Builds are open to suggestions. Only kits that are under 50% completion considered. Builds will begin this summer (June), and last until whenever (its experimental, after all).

Please sign up below, and if enough people express an interest, we'll see about funding. This is dependent upon what happens between now and this summer, of course.  Can't believe I'm proposing another GB!  Sad

This intrigues me....

Hmmm, I'll have to give some thought to what I can do

Does it have to be aircraft only? there a quite a few paper tigers.

I'd be interested.  There's a lot of x & y planes to choose from. I would be neat.

Can it include subjects that did not get off the drawing board. I have plenty of Luft 46 and paper panzers in the stash.

Bish> Sure, I'll allow it.  As long as its not something like

https://www.megahobby.com/products/soviet-ball-tank-w-winter-skis-interior-1-35-miniart.html

I'm saving that for the "WTF Group Build"!  Wink

Tempestjohnny> Since I plan to start this around June (to give people time to finish up other projects), you have plenty of time.  That F-16XL is perfect.

Someone mentioned that manufacturers tend to base their models on prototypes, which in this instance, could be a good thing.  Smile

Bish> I had to look the Marksman up.  More of an anti-aircraft system than tank.  Is that the Takom kit?

Yep, it was an AA system, along the same lines as the US Sgt Yorke, and like the Yorke it didn't enter British service. Though the Finns put the turret onto some old Soviet tanks and has now upgraded those with Leopard hulls. And yes, thats the Takom kit.

Grumble... I've been trying to resist joining a bunch of GBs this year. So far I've been able to barely resist Lewbud's Ground Attack GB. But I think you have me Gary.

Is a 1/144th Fujimi Nakajima G10N Fuguku 'America Bomber' kosher? It was designed by the Imperial Navy to take off from the Japanese home islands, cruise over the Pacific, cross the US and Canada bombing at will, cross the Atlantic, and then land in German occupied Europe to refuel and rearm and repeat the process in the other direction.

Never got beyond a plywood mock-up. The six gigantic engines were a monsterous headache. The Japanese engineering at the time just wasn't up to the task of getting anything like that workable.

Gamera> Don't I know it!  June is next month, or at least it seem like it!  The beauty of being retired, when time slips away like nobody's business.

Meanwhile, I've got a ship to build.  Smile

I'd like to find an X-32 that I can get but the ones I see are going for more than I'm willing to spend.

Thanks Gary, yes. 1/72 is what I wanted and all I saw was the Revell offerings for about twice that price. I can't get it until the 29th but put it in my watchlist. I just won a bid on an out of production Williams Brothers PW Wasp I'm going to build for a good friend and the modeling budget is a tad low at present.

It looks like we have enough Test Pilots to give this GB a go.  At least, at this time.  So I plan on starting it (God willing) on June 20 of this year, the start of summer.  How long it will run is up in the air, but count on one year.  I'll post the official group build about a month before sometime in May.

Decisions on what to build are not necessary at this junction.  All that is required is it be of a limited run and be of an experimental nature.

Well Gary, if this goes or not I bought the Tam 1/72 Boeing X-32. I wanted one anyway.

What a gawd awlful looking plane. A face only a designer could love.

Oh jeez lookie there. You posted just before I did.

I picked up a D-558-2 Skyrocket for the build.

Not the same as the D-558-1 Skystreak, which was jet powered.  I still intend to buy that one, but it seemed reasonable that I should build both versions.

Ok Gary,

I'm in! Why do you have to pick such cool subjects!

Great choice with the D-558 phase 2! I love me some Skyrocket! Even though

it was Navy. Go Air Force!

I have a NF-104 resin conversion kit, a few X-1's, I think a X-3 in the stash and an X-15.

How about experimental versions of tanks? Like the original XM1 or the MBT70?

I was thinking about the MBT 70 just the other day. Yes, that's fine!
