No worries guys,my stuff is packed and probably won't see the light of day for a few months yet.

Scott, Whirlpool just isn't waht it used to be. I guess the Whirlpool repairman passed or quit. LG and other fancy titles have out preformed them. Sorry about your mom. We did that for my mom back in 2011. She passed for the same lung issues that I got a transplant for. Sucky disease. Thanks for the good wishes, I'm going to need them. My wife and I are better friends appart than together although we know that, it's still hard to help her move into a much smaller place. If the prices here were more sane she could get someplace with some nice room. Maybe one day things will work out and she'll decide to come down and rent out her new place. Not counting on it though.

Ben, take it easy. Can't have you working on PE with a bum wrist.

Sorry to hear about your moms guys. I lost my dad about three years ago but mom is still healthy. So I guess I've got that to deal with in the next decade or so.

That's the biggest thing that sucks about getting old- you start to lose everyone you thought would be around forever...

My Mother died in the late 80s a little over a year after I got here from Okinawa.  My Father died aboiut 10 years ago.  But I did find out a few things abouit hi that he never had mentioned before, especially about being in the OSS near the end of the war.  That explained being assigned to Patton while in the Air Corps.  I did manage to get a copy of most of his military records and have them safely stored.  I still have ot get my wife's and mine though.

Anyway, I finally got some more work done on the Kagero.  Sorting though three sets of instructions and PE can get to be a bit much but I try.  It's not always easy to see what I need to but sometimes I get lucky.

Those aircraft can drive someone nuts but at least you don't have little pilors to paint with little goggles.

Ben,

I'm thinking of ya and pray you can overcome your tendonitis.  I have been experiencing it quite often the past year.  Three decades of drumming and mousing (CAD Drafter by trade) seems to be catching up.   Below is a pic of me at of a community performance before my hand started acting up.

I sliced my left index finger open a few years ago and had to have surgery to fix the tendons and it has really devalued my playing ability since I can no longer feel and adjust the pressure on that finger against my thumb or stick. Its also a reason why I have been away from the modeling bench.  Its hard to keep hold of tweezers and that is also my airbrush finger.  So lots of excersies and change in diet to keep down the inflamation, except its hard to stay true to a good diet.

As Red Green says, We are all in this together, keep you stick on the ice.

It's a shame how we get beat up over the years and degrade our ability to do the little things. Nice to see you there Scott.

Nice work so far ICAR01, glad to see somebody still posting on the GB. Thanks for the thoughts SCOTTRC, its appreciated. I had a white five piece Slingerland drum kit many years ago. It's nice seeing you behind it. You are soooo right when it comes to maintaining through exercise. Everyones muscle and tendons shrink and tighten as we age and exercise is really the only solution to keep us all going. Getting old is not easy but better than the alternative.

Ben's Update: Second visit to the doctor was nothing more than a look and see. I had tendonitis before years ago but it was nothing like this, and it healed up near 100% in just 4 weeks. Currently it is no better than last update and the 4 weeks have come and gone. The pain and swelling is a lot worse than the first time I had it years ago too. They gave me some exercises to perform at home and scheduled some Physical Therapy for my wrist, but at this point it is not any better than the last update. Still wearing a brace or compression sleeve on the hand/wrist and resting, elevating, and using ice and heat. People who know me will tell you that I am not one to sit around. I am normally on the move constantly throughout the day doing everything. I have another percussion performance for around 450-500 people in just two weeks and I can't do anything with my right hand at this point. Looks like I'm going to have to cancel it and that really burns my butt.

As far as modeling goes, I am left handed. While it eases the burden somewhat it makes it very difficult to hold small items like the 1/350 aircraft in my right hand with the right pressure and stability so I can paint them with my left.

I am frustrated beyond measure as I see work in the yard to be done, music to be played, things to do with my special needs son, motorcycling to enjoy, and modeling to complete. Enough whining from me, but I just wanted to let you all know why you haven't seen much of me here lately.

As soon as I'm back on the bench I will let everyone know.

Ben / DRUMS01

Hi everyone. I have my new prognosis for my right hand. It is severe tendonitis, fissures (cracks) in three small wrist bones, and a suspected tear in a very small ligament that connects a muscle to two of the small wrist bones. I finally have a correct splint for my forearm, wrist and thumb. The problem is that it really restricts the ability to use said right hand, wrist, and forearm, but I believe that is its purpose. I get an MRI Monday to see about the severity of the torn ligament and the prognosis of the tendonitis. They put me on another batch of steroids for six days so I hope I can get some sleep tonight (feeling a little zippy).

With that in mind I refuse to let it stop my modeling efforts (sort of). Here are the detailed painting and decal instructions for the three sea plane variations:

I did manage to lay some base coats on the little birds. In the photos you can really see the panel lines, but not too excessive; I like it.

Since these photos I painted the engine cowlings and props along with a clear coat for the decals. While it may not be much, it is better than nothing. I hope to be back building again in a couple 2-4 weeks. Thanks for the well wishes, its appreciated.

On another note, here is my next build after the Yamato is done:

Ben, sorry about your wrist. That sounds painful.

Yeah, I haven't been building for a couple months. I'm moving to Texas and my bench has been packed for a while. Once I find a place, unpack and settled in I'll start up again.

The movers said that I had a lot of boxes. I put my stash and completed builds in totes and they couldn't get over the amount of totes. I told them that taht what my wife says and that my boxes don't compair to others.

Ben: Sorry to hear that. But at least with the splint and medication you're bound to improve. Fantastic work on those teeny planes. And the racing car looks really cool. Kinda confused me at first, I thought the front end had dual tires till I noticed the steering wheel!

Grumble, I've been hoping that when I retire I'll have the time to devote to my stash. I hope that my health will be good enough to actually work on them... Black Eye

Steve: Again good luck with the move. Then you've got to find all your stuff after it's been packed up and shuffled around...

Looks fantastic Ikar Yes

Yeah, the Japanese destroyers were bad news. Fast, well armed and carried several tubes of those Long Lances plus reloads! Nobody liked seeing them. Luckly, their guns wern't on par with ours but their torpedos were a serious threat.

She looks great and I'll get you on the wall.

Great job on a good-looking ship Ikar!

Yeah, even to the end of the war the Japanese kept engaging us in night destroyer battles. Of which they won about 8-9 out of 10 without our air supremacy.

As I said I started the Shimakaze last week. Sorry that I haven't gotten more done since then but anyway my first photo here.

The sheet of PE. It did intimadate me. Though I suppose it is mostly just deck rails.

And I picked up the special set of linoleum parts. I'm not sure when you're supposed to attach them. I think I'm going to try to add them last instead of masking over all this.

I'd probably attach them when you paint the deck, but anytime after would probably work.

Looking forward to this Gam. Perhaps you can find some potholes I should look for when I do mine

Cool build Gam,

The PE should go on pretty easy.  I could never get all the brass painted on railings when I attached them before painting, so now I paint them on the tree and then attach them.

At least you don't have any German or US fire control radars to contend with.

When did the linoleum come out and where did you get it?  I could have used it on some other projects.

I picked up the set when I ordered the kit from HobbyLink Japan.

Sorry I didn't get to your earlier. This pollen has been wrecking my sinuses and one of the guys at work has been taking a lot of his vacation/holiday time so I've been working a bunch of odd hours.

Scott: Thanks for the tip! I think I'm going to paint the PE fret before cutting the rails out and then cementing them in place. Afterwards I'll try to touch up any chipped areas with a brush.

Looks good so far Gamera and i'm enjoying your work too Ikar. My right hand and wrist continue to give me trouble. I have a very bad feeling that it will take weeks or even months more before it is usable (many painful issues to heal).

It is beyond frustrating as I really want to finish the Yamato and start several others.

still going on vacation to Alaska in two weeks and it will most likely be with this hand, wrist, and forearm splint.

Hey Gamera, if you think your PE intimidates you, look ate this PE kit:

To me that kind of makes all our PE concerns moot (smile), or the person who builds ths crazy, onr or the other.

AARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Ben for the migrane!

I've got one of those types of kits, not sure if it's the same brand but it's totally PE Kawanishi Shiden. It's buried in the stash somewhere, I don't want to even think about it.

I was thinking of getting that PE 1/48 Hellcat and also a plastic one to join together to make one side skinned and the other the skeleton. The price of the two kits has me a little intimitated though as I really do not want to invest that mioney to find that they would not work together.

As for me, after a broken wrist and both feet broken, I am now getting back to some careful mobility. My right hand and wrist are accepting most movements without any pain or issue. I hope to be getting back to the IJN Yamato really soon.

Sorry for not being around boys. I moved into my "new" house on Saturday and just gao internet back yoeterday. I have much to work on in the house to make it livable including replacing the kitchen, leveling the foundation, replacing the HVAC, and replacing some of the sub floor and flooring.

I won't be starting and Group Builds anything soon, especially since I can't finish my own for a while.

I'll be around.

Ben: Ouch, I didn't know your issues were that serious. I hope you don't mind, I have been praying for you.

Steve: No worries, getting the new house set up is about three jobs in itself. Just take care of yourself and get the important stuff like your house taken care of first.

Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts and prayers Gamera.

Another update: Still not much progress towards modeling anything. After 10 weeks I am finally able to have the hand/wrist splint off unless doing something serious with weight. Had my first physical therapy visit and was given additional home exercises to complete daily between the weekly PT. Currently I find my right hand very weak compared to my left and the range of motion is greatly restricted. I've also noticed that the two tendon tears and pin hole tear in one regiment takes more time to heal than a sprain or tendonitis, go figure.  :ooops:

And now as far as both broken feet :eeek:

A have a stress fracture on the fifth metatarsal (outside long bone behind the little toe) on my right foot, and a compound fracture of the same bone on my left foot. The left foot is much worse off than the right, but at least it will heal without surgery with pins and screws... eventually.  :wtf:

One thing I can tell you is that this combination has taken a big toll on my spring and early summer motorcycle riding this year. To say I cannot wait to be back to 100% is an understatement.

On a positive note I can tell you I got my flags and signal flag PE that was previously ordered, so the Yamato will be ready for a flurry of building once I get back downstairs (aircraft, rigging, flags, weathering, display base).

I hope this message finds everyone in a much better situation than mine. It's really not that bad now as I can see the finish line after nine weeks of stagnation. Take care everyone, will write more when relevant.  :th:

Health issues really build up and take their toll as we get older.

My thoughts and prayers with you Ben. Don't sweat the Yamato, you have all the time you need.
