Harold I am putting one of these on the list for my next purchase. Thanks for that information I really appreciate it. 

Brandon I also appreciate the insight on painting it "black". This reafirms what I was thinking about really wanting to be dark grey. I have decided to try the salt method on this one and will apply the dark grey over an aluminum finish.

Knowing this is what I am up to do you think I have to prime it first or can I use an enamel aluminum as my "primer" and apply my salt and then dark grey from there? I get scared of losing panel definition with too many layers of paint.

I finished painting the canopies and glued them in place, so the only thing left on the hull is three Browning machine guns. The next task; however, is to finish the parasol wing assembly and camouflage painting.

I wanted one that could handle large and small aircraft models. After using this building berth for a 1/48 Eduard Spitfire and 1/48 Monogram PBY I am very satisfied with the way it works. I don't use it for painting because I want to keep it nice, but it works well as a drying rack after painting, as a holder while applying decals and as a display stand while work is in progress.

I was able to get some work done here. I am so glad I found some Tamiya tape to tackle my first glass since coming back. I had some knockoff stuff that looks scimilar but isnt as pliable. I am going to sand a bit more and might start working on my base this week also. I have never done a "black" scheme before and would like to do some weathering. Any suggestions on how to pull that off on black are appreciated!

 

My art teacher from many moons back told us that there is no black, just various forms of greys. Since then I have looked at colors through the lens of what shade of grey am I working with here. In your case, and only my 2 cents worth, is you are working with faded dark grey. I would paint it overall dark dark grey but avoid too dark. Then i would post shade it with lighter greys in a moddled fashion on each panel. I would apply some light streaking in areas where water would be forced along the wing and fuselage by air movement and add some water line discoloration. But that's my take. It's your kit and you need to build it as you see it in your mind.

It's been nearly 2 months since my last progress report. The camouflage painting and decals on the hull of A24-17 are completed and there is a coat of varnish on the hull. Canopy masking and wing assembly is in progress.

The camouflage is RAF Temperate Sea Scheme (TSS) this aircraft was delivered to RAAF service with in January 1942. A24-17 would retain the TSS camouflage during combat operations in the South Pacific until soon after its first major overhaul at Lake Boga, Victoria, Australia in August 1942.

Jack, the cat looks great. I love those Cats so much, I am super pleased you joined with this one. Looking forward to watching it come to life.

I have been giving my bench a break over the past few weeks, both getting my back in order but just taking a small break before I hit it hard again. The Kingfisher is ready to go, I just need to clear off one more kit about 90% done and its on.

I got some prgress done on the Catalina and wanted to check in. Interior is done and I am moving on to the glass. I will be back in a few days!

The Seamew is completed. I used some wood pieces to make a stand then glued it on a small wood base.

Head renewed, stomach full, carved up a bit, redid his collar and added a scarf.

If the build itself goes well I am going to try to do a water takeoff diorama base for it. I have some insulation I bought a while back I wanted to try out and this is the perfect application. This one is flying above the water. Maybe nose up just about to take flight.

I figured, based on pics of the real bird.  Tamiya calls out 'Transparent blue-green on silver undercoat'.

Cracked open the 1/48 Tamiya Rufe and did a bit of black basing.  Not sure if the interior should be IJN interior green or Aotake

Sorry you're having to deal with the gift that keeps on giving, Brandon.  I've had to deal with it from time to time after a plane crash I was in about 25 years ago that broke two vertebra in my lower back.  Not sure if you've tried this or not, but I have gotten relief by laying down on the floor in front of my couch and putting my legs up on the cushions where I would normally sit.  My doctor at the time recommended that.  It usually shortens the recovery time from those bad episodes.  In my case, pants were the second worst, with socks being the worst...can't stand in the middle of your socks and slowly wrestle them up while keeping your back straight like you can with pants.  OUCH!  

Thanks guys. This has been with me since I had a bad fall on the job about 30 years ago. I know what it's like and I dread when it returns. And yes, the pants are the worst, but socks are a close second. Feeling a tad better today, time for my back brace to come out and wear it a few days. I'll be back to normal in a week.
