Personally, my favorite era in F-1 was the 1970-1980 era, when all the cars looked different.  Today's cars look like some kind of out of control Gilletette razor design contest, although this year it seems the aero-thingies have been pared back.  I'm not a fan of the "halo" cage either, although I do understand it is to protect the drivers.  It's just that it makes the cars look ugly.

Looks like Ferrari is off to a great start this season.

Nice looking kit G.  I like the PE goodies - gonna be a beauty.

That pic of Verstappen bouncing over Hamilton above... the halo saved Hamiltons life as the rear came down right on his head.

All that being said - I dig the 60s/early 70s cars.  May try to squeeze this one in too

Thanks,

John

Hi everyone, with your permission, I would like to add something a little different to the F-1 group build. This is more pre-F-1 per say, but the father of F-1 as we know it.

If this is not acceptible let me know and I will pick something else.

Ben / DRUMS01

I included pre F1 in the rules:

  • And as a nod to our history - any European Championship Grand Prix car prior to Formula One

So you're good Ben!  Looking forward to the build.

Thanks,

John

I think the Brabham cars of the 70-80's were milestone designs. The same could be said of some of the Tyrell car's too. Then there was the Ferrari 312 series, wow were those something! And nobody can argue with the design and success of the Lotus series of cars either.

Hey WPWAR11, I buil;t that Lotus a few years ago and it fell together like a dream. There is plenty enough to detail under the lift off body, you will like it a lot.

I agree that the Richie Ginther Honda is a beautiful model kit too. The mold quality and detail for that car is fantastic. In the spirit of the Honda and Richie I am sharing this photo:

Yes sir, this is going to be fun....

Drums-

I just noticed the picture of your Lotus in the beginning of the thread.  Did you use the Tamiya rattlecan for the yellow or mix your own?  I think Zero paints has the Camel yellow also.

Keavdog-

The Verstappen over Hamilton picture I believe was at Monza?

Yes it was at Monza.  Better pic here showing the halo saving Hamiltons life

There's been a couple incidents that the halo probably saved a life.  Like most F1 fans I believe it's ugly but there's no question it makes the sport more safe.  Grosjean at Bahrain comes to mind.  If you remember the car went under the guard rail.  I think we had cars going on top of each other at the first corner during the Spa race one year.

Amazing Grosjean walked away from that horrific crash.

Be sure and watch race number 2 of the 2022 season.

This Sunday 3/27 at 12:55 PM ET Saudi Arabian GP on ESPN

Oh don't worry.  I haven't missed a race in over 20 years.  In fact, we try to attend one a year.  This year we have eyes set on Monza.  If you ever want to attend an F1 race make it to Montreal.  Of the F1 races I've been to Montreal does it the best.

Good afternoon,

If I may, this would be my entry. It's been started by someone else, but none of the parts were painted, so the first thing I will do is take it apart.

We need a prancing horse!

Yes, no F1 race is complete without Ferrari.  Best of luck taking the kit apart GM!

The original modeler must have been an armor guy.

That's what I was thinking!  Man you have to love Tamiya details - looks awesome just sitting there unpainted.

Thanks,

John

WPWAR11, I used TS-34 Camel Yellow Spray Lacquer 100ml Tamiya TAM85034.

GREG, That is the 1/12 Tamiya kit. It fell together very well.

Bill, I have not ordered anything from them since before COVID. Then they were reliable but it took around three weeks +.....

Don't know how they are now though?

It's been a while since I built a car. I think I want a jar of Zero Paint 323 scuderia red.

Where to buy here in the US, or where else?

Hobbyworld-USA is their US distributor.  I think they recently re-did their site and it's a bit clunky.  I have ordered Revell paints from them in the past as they are the US distributor for them as well.

BNA (Australia) are fantastic as well but it looks like they are out

I read this morning that Las Vegas will host a Formula-1 race next year.  And the 2-mile road track is supposed to go down the strip (!!!).

Those badges are great!

I have the thing taken apart except for the engine core, which will all get painted aluminum except for some details. The model won't steer again, which I don't care about. The whole inside of the tub is aluminum not red. I managed to only stick myself once with the Xacto. Mostly just a lot of careful prying and popping.

Stripped off all of the chrome except for the roll bar, which is probably chrome plated steel. The plating came off easily with oven cleaner. It's all polished aluminum.

Red paint, decals on order. Harness set received.

Here's the 1:1. Lovely car.

I de-chromed the Brabham's parts this past weekend, but the plating on the rear wheels were really subborn.  Everything else just washed away after a soak in Purple Power.  Another oddity was that one front wheel was molded in white, the other in black.

I need to go back to the rear wheels for one more round of cleaning.  I think I have a can of Easy-Off under the sink.

Quite the project their Bill.

Curious about the black vs white wheel G.  Same tree?

Thanks,

John

The Brabham's front wheels were individual sprues, so maybe I got a leftover or something.

The triangular body is distinctive.  The flat-12 is so... flat.  Big Smile

Dang, that Sephora pop-up ad is super annoying.  I feel like someone is fondling me when the frame squeezes me in.  Devil
