I actually got some work done on my cat this morning. I glued the forward fuselage together withe the cockpit in it. And I did some more sanding and filling on the intakes, and I'm nearly done with them. Now I'm get interested in it again because of theis new weathering technique brought up by MACooke and the other guy. Now I want to get my bird together so I can try some fancy painting techniques.

I think bstrump hit the head on the nail... they don't all look like that. But give Darren credit for coming up with a hell of a paint job.

I think yours looks great Mitch. The tone variation looks awesome. Once you apply the wash, it'll be even better. Don't forget, Darren's a/c is just one example; they don't all look like that.

I just spent over an hour and a half painting my 'cat; I took photos, came upstairs, checked out the forums and what caught my eye?

http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=36585

"New Weathering Technique"...for naval aircraft.

My results?

I think mine looks pale in comparison to Darren Roberts' craft.

Yeah, I haven't had much time either. My friend called up out of the blue and needed help instaling a new hard drive. Now I'm being Mr. Mom while my wife goes to Atlanta for business. Maybe I'll get some sanding done (thanks sentry!) tonight after I get everything else out of the way. :-) Good news on the canopy ipms33206!

It worked! The auto polishing compound worked on the canopy. There is still a slight distortion at the top of the canopy, but at 1/72 it shouldn't be to noticeable. I am attaching the detail parts to it then all of the tiny parts that go around on the fuselage then paint! I am going to do the pre-shade technique on the panel lines. I have some of those mico brushes that should work for that.

I am working on the ugly seam that runs across the canopy. I have the 'ridge' sanded down and now I am going to use automotive ultra fine polishing compound. After all that hooey I am going to coat the thing in Future. I hope this all works. I do have some Squadron Thermaform just in case! I want to get this thing done! Sounds like everyone is making good progress. The photos are great! I hope to get in some serious building time this weekend.

Well I haven't got much done either lately. I was feeling run down last night so all I did was take a look at some cat pics in a book I have to determine wether or not my cat has the white undersides or not. I have some more (yuch!) sanding to do and then will move on to scribing. Not sure how much of this I will do as I have not done this before and I don't want to mess up all I have done up to this point. But, I can always fill up any scratches and try again I guess. It's getting close to lawn mowing season here in Tn. so I will be out in the yard some this weekend, getting the mower ready and all of that stuff. I hope to get some time in on the cat though, and will post some progress pics. You guys have a great weekend!

Over the course of two nights I've managed to decal one side of my VF-11 F-14B. Many of the markings are two-piece decals so the progress is not as fast as I'd like but boy, does it look sweet! One thing I'm not pleased about is the fact that TwoBobs prints the gray markings too lightly. Even after cutting the paint 20% with white, the gray markings are still very faint and they're not supposed to be. Consider this a "heads-up" for any of you who are using TwoBobs for your markings.

I actually sat at my desk for about an hour or two...or was it ten minutes? I dunno...I worked a bit on detailing the landing gear. I got those painted last weekend (used cheap spray can of flat white).

Taking a cue from sentry (thanks sentry!) I'm using some small copper wire that I got from work. I work for a manufacturer of copper wire, we must have over 100 million of feet in stock (no joke), all sizes. I got a piece of scrap, a few feet of 16 GA 26-STR wire before it went into extrusion to make TFFN (PVC and Nylon insulated). I'm using the individual strands to replicate the hydraulic lines on the gear struts; I don't know if I'll try to tackle the gear bays.

I hope you all stay healthy, and get some work done on your 'Cats. My new Badger 155 came today, and I haven't even taken it out of the box. Maybe tomorrow, or Saturday.

Sounds like everyone is making good progress. I, on the other hand, am making no progress at all. I will get back into it eventually, I might even pull it out and have a look today. Until then, good luck with everyone else on your builds.

I've definitely got the flu...fever, achy, coughing up chunks of lung, sore throat. Came home early from work today (Thur)...my new Badger 155 arrived. I don't even feel like opening the box. Maybe tomorrow.

Tonight's "opening night" for my daughter's junior high musical...the next four days are going to be hectic hectic hectic.

Same here. It's dirt cheap, too. For the price of one of those fancy scribing tools you can darn near buy a lifetime supply of #11 blades. I take a slightly used blade to scribe with. That way it actually removes a sliver of plastic and not just push it aside.

roejn: Scribing tool? We ain't got no tools here. We mask the panel lines, with a small, small gap, 'bout 0.001", then we sandblast the panel lines. We do it the tough way, that's why we're building F-14's 'cause NO ONE makes a "shake and bake" of a Tomcat.

OK, that's my "angry old man" from SNL (remember Dana Carvey did him?).

You can buy a pin vise for $10-$15, and put a cut off pin, or sewing needle in it. Or you can buy scribing tools.

Also, Swanny has a how-to on scribing...

http://www.swannysmodels.com/Scribing.html

It's very informative.

Good luck!

Still sanding away here...... these revell beasts are a lesson in patience! I hope to have it about done tonight and move on to rescribing. BTW since I am new to this what do you guys use as a scribing tool? I should be posting pics by the weekend so you all won't accuse me of slacking! :-)

Done: main fuselage together, gear bays and gear painted, cockpit/seats complete.
I got a lot acomplished this weekend. These next two weeks, howerver, will be a different story. I have about half of the front fuselage rescribed. Once I am done with that it's off to the paint shop for some pre-shading. After that I suppose it's all down hill.
I am looking forward to this Su-27 I bought off of Ebay. It's the 'Russian Knights' version but I have some Ukranian decals I am going to put on it and a nice paint job.
Mitch- you ain't kiddin about this guy. He's got some fantastic kits listed. I got this sucker for 11.50- normally a 35.00 kit. I did see that his 1/48 Has F-14 Jolly Rogers did go for 44 bucks though. That's the thing with 'Cats on ebay- they are grossly expensive. The F-4's look to be going for deals too. I'll keep a watch on him, but like you I am having a hard time sneaking money into my paypal account without being noticed!
Well, I'll post when I can get some more work done. My girl still has the digicam at work.

How's everbody else coming along?

Jon: I was THIS CLOSE to bidding on the F-15E he had...it had the cluster bombs included (gasp!) [:0]...it was at $15 for several hours...I thought it'd go up to $25 to $30 in the last ten minutes. However, my wife has put her foot down, I've been buying too many model kits recently, so I must not buy for awhile. That F-15E went for $15.50...D'OAH !

Did you see that one of the F-14D "Black Bunny" kits went for close to $60?

I swear if I ever win the lottery or something...I'm gonna buy that guy out. He has a complete comic collection, back in early January a guy in the U.K. had an offer up to $40 grand for his comic collection...he has all the way back to issue 1 in 1941.

Geesh...that's what a single guy with a high paying job can do.

well, I just won a 1/48 Academy Su-27 on ebay- from the guy we were talking about Mitch... What a selection! 1/48 Has F-4G for 20 bucks- still sealed. I'll be watching this fella more often.
How are the builds progressing?
