Major decals are all done, and no silvering. Now there's about 4000 stencils to put on.

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

NO, but I had my bicycle in the trunk! I was on my way to a bike shop to get the bottom bracket cartridge removed (it was rusted in and I couldn't remove it with my own tools). I rear-ended a guy. Totally my fault. I was so mad (at myself), now I have to deal with insurance. The only consolation was that it wasn't with my wifes car, I drive an old beater of a ford taurus with 250k and rust and other dents and stuff. Sad [:(] the thing is too old and ugly to replace, I'll probably get it written off and then my wife and I will be forced to get a new car earlier than expected, we were thinking of getting a new one at the end of summer, oh well. Life happens!

On another note, I'm glad I hit the guy I did hit as he was rather cool about it and wasn't very upset. Just a few days later, my wife and were at a stop light and someone across the intersection was rear eneded and the two guys got out and were yelling and screming at each other, then they started throwing punches and stuff, drivers in some of the other cars around had to get out and pull them off each other! Shock [:O] I couldn't believe it, it was unreal like something you see in the police videos from 'COPS' or something like that. Sheesh, road rage, poeple need to mellow out a bit. Sorry to carry on like this guys. Ashamed [*^_^*] Back to things that really matter - modeling!

Well, little prgress on the Hurricane, I put the dullcoat on it last night. I thought I'd be done by now but I've been dealing with the aftrmath of a little fender bender from last week.Angry [:(!]

Once I get my pastels on for weathering, then I'll just have re apply the dullcoat, put on the canopy and gunsight, clear bits, radio wire and voila, one RCAF 1 Sqdn Hurricane.Big Smile [:D]

Thanks guys! On this model there are no more bits to be filled in for painting (the canopy will be masked with, er, something (either maskol or masking tape) and the gun taped over). Next time I do need to fill something I'll try out the techniques you've suggested.

Mike sorry mate i've never used the Eduard masks before i've always cut my own, but even with my own i always paint the wings first and then do the fueselage in another painting session............

Hey Osher have you ever considered using blue tac, it can be a bit of a chore to get it all off but thats what i use..............

Well the Doc has given me the week off as I have caught a nasty bug floating around the office. One can only rest so much, so I am going to get elbows deep into my Spitfire.

A question to all those blokes who have used the Eduard Camo masks. Did you mask the whole plane at once or follow the staging plan as suggested by Eduard? The masks look excellent.

The sky undersides are on and I have masked up ready for the dark earth. I even noticed that Eduard even include ventral masking for the demarcation line between sky and upper camo.

cheers

Mike

Tony - I've used future to sit decals down with good results.... mostly on smaller decals like instrument panels and such, but it works like a charm! good luck to you, if you soak them in supershine to get them to release from the backing (instead of water) then the fuselage should be primed (and cured) with supershine as well... then when you put them on brush supershine over them making sure you go past the edges of the decal they should go down fine...

Despite earlier promises to myself to not use Tamiya decals ever again, I've found myself doing it again, as the aftermarket sheet I was going to use had some differences that meant I couldn't use them.
The main problems I have with Tamiya decals are bubbles and silvering, which are both symptons of air being trapped under the decal, I think. They are also thick and tend to obscure Tamiya's exceptional panel lines underneath.
For the first time, I'm using Johnson's Supershine (our Future equivalent) as the decal solving/setting agent.
So far I've got 75% of the decals on, some minor bubbles which I'll fix in one cross, but no silvering, the bane of my life. I should add that I'm trimming as much decal film as I can.
I'm really happy with the way it's gone so far, but now I arrive at the moment of truth.
I've got to put the kill markings, which are numerous, so I can't trim around them, on the rudder. The rudder is not a completely smooth surface, having a panelled effect, and some mottled paintwork over it already. I've also got to do the wing walk markings, which always seem to want to silver badly.
If I pork it up, I can't get the kill decals from aftermarket, as they are specific to this aircraft.
Hopefully my new technique will go Ok, but this will really test it.

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Ditto on tony's method... and if it dries before you can take it out, just a few drops of water rebinds it together... any left over bits get taken out with a damp Qtip...

Hi Osher,
I've never had the problem you experienced, so my advice may not help, but I hope it does..
I usually use cut (not tear) small pieces of tissue and stuff these into the bay. Then I wet the tissue until it is quite damp but not soaked by dipping my finger in water then touching the drip to the tissue. Capillary action does the rest. Once you've sprayed the first coat, it tends to bind the tissue together and you don't need to re-wet it for subsequent colours or coats.

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Thanks guys, I'll give it a shot! At least the second coat went on really nicely, and the blotches of the first coat (caused by my not stirring enough) have blended in.

The way I used the kitchen roll, was to tear of a strip, and make it into a ball, which I pushed into the gaps. Oh well, I've been learning a lot recently!

osher - I've found 2000 grit sandpaper gets off the little hairs and bits right nice! then either some future or a spot of the same color over it gets it nice and uniform again... (I use it for dust that may settle into my weathering or paint as I go)

Good job on the models Tony! Doing well.

My bf-110 has a second coat airbrushed on the underside. It's got a strange finish, which took me a while to work out. I used kitchen roll as a filler for the bays. What I didn't realise is that the air from the brush would break-up little bits of the tissue, and deposit it over the aircraft, along with the paint... Other than, not too bad. I'm hoping a little light sanding, maybe some touch up, then some Future/Klear will top it off.

Gee, I wish I had got onto this GB earlier, I could really go on with this BoB thing.
I've started decalling the 109, slow progress so far. Thanks for the good feedback everyone.
Darren - I was in to see Chris last week, bought some paint, that's it. That's twice in a row !
I know he's got something I want next time though. Good self control though, unusual for me.
Cheers.

Tony, nice job on the stippled mottling mateThumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]
The sponge is the only way to go as far as stipple effects go, best part being the stipple mottle was usually applied with a scrungy mop, a leafy branch, or even a shirt bundled up, so the uneven effects of your sea sponge do extremely well to reproduce this!

Jules, I try and avoid seeing my models in sunlight, you can ALWAYS bet your bottom dollar the sun will show up every flaw, no matter how hard you try.

Tony that effect looks great, It's gotta be "Helmut Wicks" 109 in that schemeThumbs Up [tup]

Tweets it's going well, i sprayed the mottle on it last night, had to wipe off a couple of bits that i stuffed up but all was going well and i put the future over the top of it, and then i saw it in the sunlight and i saw the little spits the A/B produced so i've just ran some more extra thin RLM 65 over the spots just to satisfy myselfThumbs Up [tup]

Tom don't worry buddy, "Kremps" is just in one of her "Quiet Moods".......
You know how she gets when she's in one of them moodsThumbs Up [tup]

Tony Great work on the mottle it looks stunning.

You would never have acheived the same effect with an A/B.

Progress Update Finally managed to get rid of those shiny patches from the Hurri yesterdayBig Smile [:D]

Therefore today will be about adding exhaust and gun smoke staining using the new A/B, and some subtle chipping to the wing walks etc.

Almost finished!!!!!

Hi Everyone,
Thanks everyone for the positive comments.
And a big thanks to Tom for the scans, very much appreciated.
I had a go at the mottle on my 109 last night. I hadn't really had a go at it before, in the last 20 years at least. I was a bit worried about the type of very close mottle I was attempting. I reasonably happy with the result, let me know what you think.
In the photo, you can see evidence of 3 tips I've picked up from this GB alone, thanks very much guys.
1. Masked the canopy with BMF
2. Applied future over the light blue fuselage prior to mottling, in case of mistakes.
3. Applied the mottle with a little piece of sea sponge I bought at an art shop.

Cheers
