Jules, I tried out multiple shades of Alclad w. that NMF Mustang i did recently. I found that the White Aluminum & the Duraluminum were so close it didn't matter, don't waste your time switching between them (I did!). I also tried a shadow coat effect with these but the contrast wasn't enough to be effective. I ended up using the Dark Aluminum or mixing shades to get a darker tone. So I ended up using 3 shades - Chrome, White/Duraluminum & Dark, plus bits of the burnt iron or jet exhaust for weathering or shading.

I pretty much always went over Tamiya White primer, except for Chrome which goes over gloss black. A new primer from Alclad has just hit the shelves, so I'm waiting to try that. (I love their paint, the gloss black is superb.) The primer is very fine & thin, obviously ready to drop into an airbrush.

I have made some decals for Madmike last year. I will be making some more for us this year. I may be able to assist.

Thanks for the encouragement on the Hawk. Thumbs Up [tup]
I finished nothing last year.... I don't want that happening again.Ashamed [*^_^*]

Nenad thanks for the offerThumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]you may be able to get me out of a jam.....
here are the two pics i'm useing for referance.....

On the first pic you can see the checker patten and the top hat motiff on the tail, thats the one that has me concerned, apart from that i could use the diamond under the C/pit and the code letters on the fueselage + the white 83 on the nose, the fues band i was always planning on painting on........

Carl thanks for the tip on alcladThumbs Up [tup] i noticed when i applied it to the Mustang i've been working on that i could only see the difference between the white aluminium and Duraluminium at a certain light angle, i was wondering whether to repaint the black undercoat over the areas to be painted duralinium to see if it would be any darker, on the Mustang i painted the duraluminium straight over the white aluminium.......

Geez, your right Jules.
Totally unacceptable people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I expect to see routine BUMPS from now on!!!

Well, the super detailing off the motor for the Bell 47 has started, and will be a LONG and tedious processSigh [sigh]
Only beaten by the detailing of the c/p consoleSigh [sigh]Sigh [sigh]
But, seeing as they are the 2 most observed areas, and the scale is large, would look pathetic just banging in the OEM stuff.
Good practice anyways, I plan to super detail the Trimaster Salamander one day, so need a starting point.
It's all good mate!Wink [;)]Tongue [:P]

Here is the progress on my entry for this GB. It is trumpeters P-40 Tomahawk Mk.II. it is a bird from 112 sqn RAAF, flown under control of the RAF, It was piloted by an Australian ace called Jack Bartle. The decals were the ones that came with the kit, and I only found out a few days ago that this was an RAAF Tomahawk (I was going to do some decal scrounging to make a 3 sqn one).

The trumpeter kit has been good to build so far. The fit of parts has been surprisingly good. The camo is my first attempt at a freehand job, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. It still needs a flat coat, which I'll do tomorrow once the decals have fully dried.

hope you like it so far.

A quick question if I may...

I am intending to build a Spitfire mkVIII "Grey Nurse Squadron" and am trying to ascertain if they carried RAF type A or B camo schemes, was there a difference between the RAF and RAAf patterns at all?

Normally this would not matter too much but I might be able to get my hands on some cheap Eduard camo masks so the question needs now to be asked!

cheers

Not sure about the camo patterns, obviously the colours were diffe********e thing interesting that I've recently been reading up on is the fondness the RAAF crews had for waxing & polishing their planes. Apparently this was thought to give a bit more speed and it does suggest that one should temper those final flat coats with more gloss than typically found in Europe..

I could not believe that piece in the latest FSM about the yanks deliberately weathering their planes for some sort of competition. Unbelievable! You'd think they had better things to do at the time.

Mike the RAAF Patterns were very similar to RAF apart from the tones of the colours due to the different shades and tones of the enviroment that they operated in. In a lot of cases the patterns would not quite meet the standards laid down, as in time of war there was not the time to be perfect, close enough was often good enough.

Daniel, your tomahawk looks good.

Finally, picked up my Hudson today, will have to do a little research to decide what mark was used by 1 SQN. Will start on cockpit first and post progress photos as I go.
Wayne I enjoy getting older, especially when I consider the alternative.

Thanks Jules and Wayne.

It is the new 1/48 kit Jules. Not a bad kit either, except for the cockpit.

I think I can do everything butthat white number on he nose. You may have to make that up from some white decal paper. Now, I am not promising, but I will give it a try. This Aussie GB hits closer to home and I'd like to try and help out where I can.

Canyou send me any more pics and try and make them higher resolution. I also need a scan of a tracing of the Tail, and fuselage sections. This is so that I can size the artwork.

I have a few what if's that MadMike and I are trying to do in the future. Whistling [:-^]

Mike, you have an incoming email. I have sent you some diagrams and descriptions of the camo patterns and colors worn by the Grey Nurse SQN. What you will find is that the scheme they wore was field applied and not a standard A or B pattern.

Cheers
Darren

edit
Oops almost forgot, depending on where the SQN was located and at what time the camo was either foliage green and dark earth or dark green and ocean grey upper surfaces.

Thanks mate!!

I was kinda hoping to short circuit the masking of the upper camo, looks like a protracted masking session in going to happen!

Mike,
I found a reference that says that the majority of RAAF Spits would be delivered in RAF colour camo and most often they would simply over spray the mid-stone areas with foliage green prior to delivery to the sqadrons. Here are some other references that you may or may not have found already:

Some in RAF UK colours, some in the RAAF Foliage Green/Earth Brown:
http://decals.kitreview.com/decals/sharkattackdecalreviewrk_1.htm

The shark-mouth spit here appears to have quite a light grey:
http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-air-support/ww2-allied/spitfire.htm

The Spit at Temora may be the best colour example you can find, assuming you trust their research (probably pretty safe). There's a video of it here, although on my monitor the video colours are different to the stills. Might have to go down there & look at the thing in person:
http://www.aviationmuseum.com.au/aircraft/Spitfire.cfm

http://www.clubhyper.com/reference/spitfireviiitd_2.htm
A fair bit of colour input in the review here. Some great info although no shark-mouths:

Carl

Thanks for the links. I will take a look at those in detail!

I still have not got the kit in the mail as yet, but am doing the research while I wait.

After all the years I have been building models, I do not have a Spitfire in the cabinet!

cheers

Strange isn't it MikeQuestion [?]
I've got US and German craft coming out of my ying yang, but the unmistakable Spitfire just doesn't exist in the collection.......
Gonna have to fix that one soon!!!

Well, did some more on the engine for my Bell today.
I will post some pics this week, but the kit item, once ass'y, compared to the pics I have of the real engine, well, it's just shamefulAshamed [*^_^*]Ashamed [*^_^*]

I realise when this kit was built, it would have suited 90% of the peole that bought it, but now I'm into the detail side of things, you just can't leave it alone.
Ah well, wait for pics, looks ok so far, but need to get alot more wire to do the plumbing on this thing.

The irony of it all is that I have Spitfires in my stash ranging from 1:24 down to 1:72.

Well, the Monogram Spitfire is going to look great next to my Bf109E Smile [:)]

Sean & Mike Sign - Ditto [#ditto]
[:0] I'm with Jules, 50% of my collection (small as it is) is made up of Spits.

Jules if you want any scanning done, just forward the pics in an email to me.

a whopping amount of progress this week... I actually got the ultracast seat painted... and then promptly dunked in the castrol super clean to get it fresh again as I decided the harness paint was too thick... but man those seats are sharp!!!! I can't wait for the intake and dust guard and tires I ordered as well...

I guess there is no hurry as I haven't got those in yet... in fact I might switch over to my A6M2 for the midway build as it is a simple kit and shouldnt take too long... no AM bits for that one...

Been in a sort of modeling slump lately... really wanting to build something but not having the energy to do it when the time comes... maybe it's that bottle of Future I brought to work... I've been nipping on it here and there when no one is looking and I am coming home with a hangover... yeah! thats it!

---edit---

I only have one spit at present.. the 1/24 Hobby Craft one and it looks to be fairly detailed... I really can't wait to latch into it but need some more paints as I am almost out of RAF interior green...

Ok, heres a peek at the engine for the Bell so far.

And this is what the real thing looks like

You dont have to be a rogue scholar to realise the factory stuff just dunt cut it, and because of this, I have my work cut out for me to and even come remotely close to the real thing.
Gonna love every second of it too!!!!!!!
