wow! a bit of activity today!

Jules - sorry, Sean starts to pouting when we pick on him TOO much... remember family night at Happy Acres last yr when his trousers slipped around his ankles? I'll never forget that... Brilliant stunt, that using laquer thinner to make his belt weaken in the middle... you come up with some winners Jules!

Darren - thanks..... will pass on the scotch, bad memory associated with that one. When I was on the rapid deployment team, I medevac'd a patient from near Izmir Turkey to Wiesbaden Germany and was in the air for almost 18 hours straight... got him to the hospital and the doctor I was with knew a friend in Dusseldorf so we hopped a train up there... 4 am, haven't slept 4 hours of the last 24... riding in helicopters and being busted around in them... this fellow pulls out a bottle of scotch!!!! 1 glass and I was done for... the taste is still in my mouth!! No sir I am a Jameson's man myself!!! Congrats on your 500 posts!!! We'll drag another 500 of them out of you before this build is over! Wink [;)]

Well gonna go meander around a bit, haven't been here much to see what is going on in the last few days...

AHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I knew there was tampering involved!!!Angry [:(!]
Either of you 2 do it again and I'll mix Preperation H with your denture paste!!!

Well, started collecting bits and pieces to help scratchbuild the Bell.
Got some wire from work today (read-stole) that is the perfect size not only for antenna wires in 1/48, but also for wire 'bundles', like the kind that runs up the centre console on my BellSmile [:)]
Next is to start scratchbuilding some fuel tanks to back date the Bell from a G to a D model.
Still have to finish my 109 for the BoB yet.

Oh why cant life be simpleDisapprove [V]

Tweets, tell us about your 109, what extras do you have? I found some lovely corrected spinners & props on the web for my G-10 late the other day but haven't been able to find them again. Damn I hate that. Have you gone resin for the cockpit? I've got a PE cockpit but the resin is soooo much simpler & quicker.

Agree with you totally on the resin Carl, I do a bit of PE here and there (mostly harnesses) but most of my AM stuff is usually resin replacments.

Got it in one Wayne!!

Carl, for the 109 I'm doing for the BoB GB, I didnt get the chance to apply any PE bits.
The group I ordered my stuff from in the US stuffed the order AGAIN and sent it via Surface mailAngry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]
So had to do it OOB.Disapprove [V]
Looks ok, but could be better.
I usually try and avoid Resin, my preferance is to scratchbuild or PE things, resin just complicates matters having to remove bits to get them to fit.
Might tackle it again one day, but for now I'll stick with PE

Thankfully, the PE stuff will get here in time for the Nth African GB, which I plan on using on an E4Big Smile [:D]
Also have a 129 for that GB, with a mongrel camo job.

Hmmmm...... I forgot about this group build, even though I have the badge in my signature.

Sign - With Stupid [#wstupid]

I have started a build a few days ago that will do nicely for this GB. It is trumpeter's 1/48 P-40B tomahawk. I'll be doing it as one of the RAF birds flown by RAAF 3 sqn pilots in Africa. Here's a pic of the one I'm doing:

I'll see if I can get that RAN Skyhawk I said I'd do too.

I'm not sure that there's much in it, the PE for the 109 requires a lot of kit removal. The first aid kit hatch, for instance, requires the kit part to be cut right out while others require two step indents, which don't look like much fun.

I'm thinking, however, that the Eduard fans amongst us could coordinate on an order. Their shipping to Oz is so expensive (~$40) but if you spend >US$80 you get shipping for free. It'd make sense for us to build up a group order & then someone could distibute via Oz Post. Anyone interested? I'm looking a a kit or two of theirs so we'd get to the $80 pretty quickly.

I got the pic from this site:
http://www.raafwarbirds.org.au/aircraft.htm
It's actually an aircraft from 412 sqn RAF according to that site. But it was flown by an Aussie. If you have a look at this site http://www.3squadron.org.au/indexpages/pics.htm there is some pics of 3 sqn tomahawks. Do you know what the squadron codes would have been for the early model tomahawks shown there? I can see that the later ones have CV * codes, but can't see the ones on the Mk.IIb's.

I plan on using the RAF roundels and fin flashes from the trumpeter kit and either masking and painting the letters or making my own decals.

Ok!!! It's official now... just ordered my Typhoon Mk 1b, Ultracast seat, tires... (skipped on the control surfaces) also the decals... going this coming weekend to get the appropriate Color of Eagles (Vallejo) paints from the LHS... and I am set! On a side note for those participating, I also ordered another Wildcat (Martlet) for the N Africa GB... also have a Fieseler Storch to help fill it out... but thats another build, another time...

So... I am officially in with a RAAF Typhoon Mk 1b, possibly an AT-6 if I have time...

Tom, I am really looking forward to your build because the Typhoon is one of my all time favourite aircraft. Also, did you pick up the Typhoon dust filter from Ultracast as well?

Cheers

I looked at it and am considering it... they have both the filter, or the intake and filter combo... thinking about the combo...

I agree... my dad built me one as a kid and I always loved that AC... the tempest too of course but the Typhoon was my first...

Good to see you've made your choice TomThumbs Up [tup] Typhoons were a bit of a rarity in the RAAF............
Speaking of the Fiesler Storch i have my eye on this 1/32 one at the LHS, my gaze also seems to find it's way to the Trumpeter 1/32 Grumman Avengers that are covering the floor, the guy at the LHS opened one of them up so i could have a peek and i was very impressed with the kit which includes a modest amount of PE , All i have to do is get over this whole 1/48 thing and then i might just buy oneThumbs Up [tup]Wink [;)]

Learn something every day. I didn't even know that the RAAF ever had Typhoon's (several of the 'venerable' lists don't mention them. While checking this out I also discovered that the Sea Fury was the younger brother of the Typhoon[:0] - never had a clue about that either.

hmmm... news to me also... yeah I found the decals on greatmodels and snapped them up Bandha... I think it was Jules who later found some info on them... ends up there were 8 or so being tried out by the RAAF and ended up in N. Africa... seems you Aussies had a bit of everything in the air during the war, from F4U's, F4F's, Typhoons and even a Dornier!

I found this on the ADF Serials site, but only via Google. Can't find any menu tree on the site that will lead to this page:

Tom, I will update the group build list to show that you are building a Typhoon.

Mike, glad to hear that your Spitfire is on the way, with luck I will have my Hudson early next week.

To group build members don't forget to keep us all informed with progress reports of your builds.

Jules

cheers mate, glad to help and thanks again for your kind offer!

I have another project in mind to add some flavour to my entries in the GB. Just need to visit my decal supplier and pick them up...How does a Trumpy 1:144 F-86F-30 converted to a CAC Sabre sound?

At 1:144 only the gun arrangement would need to be changed!

cheers

1:144 has to be some sort of S&M process. I was buying something cheap to practice on (when my new airbrush eventually arrives) & picked up an A-10, thinking it was 1:72. Got home to find my first 1:144. I promised I'd keep it rough as the idea is to use it as a paint mule, but I always get sucked in & start fiddling. At that scale you either go mental getting into the detail or else find it much easier to leave things be (I'm still finding out just where I'll fall).

Carl, thats funny... I am glad I heard that as I was very tempted to get a 1/144 kit the other day.. albeit it was a PBY so it wouldnt have been REAL small... but still. I might have been more tempted to try and add to it...

I got the decals and paint for the Typhoon today from squadron... which means the kit should be here in a day or two from great models... (they always take longer to ship than squadron for some unknown reason... bigger selection though which is a plus) I also got another Wildcat to do a Martlet Mk.3 from N Africa for the N Africa build... funny, first I really knew about the Martlet was the BoB GB... now I am finding more and more reference to them...

The beauty of a Sabre in 1:144 is that it is an overall NM finish and thus pretty simple to apply. The canopy is one piece IIRC, so the only detail change is removal of the top and bottom gun troughs. At the scale it is, that is all that is needed to make it a CAC Sabre.

You should see some of the progress builds in 1:144 on Aircraft Resource Centre. One bloke is adding full detail to a 1:144 F-5E Tiger II, amazing stuff!

cheers
