Jules - because kids are dumber here! Wink [;)] Actually some big lawyer type in Washington D.C. decided kids weren't responible enough to handle drinking at 18, even though they have been doing it that way here since who knows when... they changed it back in 86 or so... I was 20 in 86 so got to drink for 2 yrs, had to go without a yr then was legal again... it made me dizzy I tell ya!

Daniel - it was 96 deg yesterday here... what did you say about beer and cold? Wink [;)] Remember we're beindling building this in MY backyard... ( --edit-- from the typo you can tell I was well into the raw material for the superstructure when I typed that)

BTW guys there were no Avengers in VT-8 as a matter of fact the Avenger never appeared until early 43 and the squadrons for each carrier are as followed USS Yorktown VT-5 (Torpedo 5) VF-5 (Fighting 5) for bombing and scouting 5 i think the coding is VB-5/VS-5. USS Enterprise VT-6 (Torpedo 6) VF-6 (Fighting 6) and VB-6/VS-6 ( Bombing 6 and Scouting 6). USS Hornet VT-8 ( the ill fated Torpedo 8) VF-8(Fighting 8) VB-8/VS-8 (Bombing 8/Scouting 8 ). All three Torpedo Squadrons were equipped with the TBD-1 Devastator and suffered approximately 90% casualties.

Mike - there was a ground based VT-8 as well as VT-8 from the Hornet, residing on Midway, they had 6 Avengers. That kind of threw me at first when you said that, and it took me a moment to remember VT-8 on the island was different from the carrier based one.

then who is the wise guy who said VT-3 when they were based off of the Saratoga. And if the VT-8 on Midway was a Marine unit why weren't they designated VMT-8? BTW wasn't the Vindicator a Army version of the Dauntless or was it the airframe that closely resembled the HellDiver?

Mike - the A-24 Banshee was the step sister to the Dauntless, the SB2U was the bird the Dauntless replaced, it looked somewhat like the Helldiver (in a granny sort of fashion Wink [;)]) here is a link to it:

http://www.military.cz/usa/air/war/bomber/sb2u/sb2u_en.htm

as for the (shoreside) VT-8 not being VMT-8, it's because it was a Navy unit. I'll check into it and see why the identical names for the squadrons, perhaps it was split? I'll get back to ya on that though. Good replies! It's making me have to think through some things I either took for granted or didnt hit me in the first place! (like two VT-8's)

Michael - outstanding builds! I like the weathering you did on both kits.. I am glad you shared those with us, I like the base for the SBD by the way, I always hesitate to put a parked SBD with wide open dive flaps but yours looks right on!

Tom and Mike The VT-8 based on Hornet (CV-8) and the land based one on Midway island were the same. The 6 Avengers, having just been delivered from pearl harbour, planned on catching up with Hornet before the battle started. They couldn't make it to Hornet so were diverted to the island instead. Hope that clears things up.

mstanley Nice builds mate. I like the Dauntless posed like that. Thanks for sharing.

There is a Hellcat from VF-27 with the sharks mouth on the Aeromaster sheet "Best Seller Hellcats Part II" (sheet 48-600). You can order it straight from the aeromaster site or try squadron or something. Have a look at www.aeromaster.com

Not Tamiya. It is the new Special Hobby kit. Beautiful cockpit and engine mount / landing gear details.

Mike I didn't think that was the Tamiya kit as I'm working on one at the moment and it's interior is, shall we say "rudimentary". The IP is supplied as a decal only and there is no detail on the panel itself for you to drybrush.

I can't commit to any more GB's either. I'm already involved with 5 of them. With two builds planned for two of those five, I'm pretty much flat out. I haven't even got a kit for one of them, and I still said I'll join anyway.

BTW, I actually picked up a Monogram 1/48 TBD-1 kit the other day. So if all goes according to plan (what plan???) I might build it as a second build for this GB.

I'm absolutely GB'd out for this year and Tom I know what you mean by being "free" from a build, I'm sort of feeling like that with the Aussie GB at the moment.
Next year (you can remind me I that I said this when I break it) I am going to be good and not overcommit myself to GB's I'll never finish.

Cheers
