Still mulling over my options. May do something in 1/72 for a change. Got a few more weeks to decide & I love procrastination.

No kit as yet, but I picked up Squadron's CR42 In Action at the LHS on Friday, so I think that pretty much means I'll be doing a CR 42 then!

Rick There's a load of good RA kits out there in 1/72 now, great to see manufacturers picking up subjects other than those of the main combatant nations.

Karl, there sure are. I wish the manufacturers would do a few of them in 1/48. Right now I'm thinking of doing the Special Hobby 1/72 Fiat CR 25 twin engine fighter. My AB needs a good workout & the mottle scheme on that bird would certainly provide a challenge.

sounds like people are getting their gear together. Sounds good. I'm waiting for my hasegawa Veltro to come in the mail. Other more pressing matters include the current lack of a real digital camera for pics....my wife has the other one, and it did't take very good pics anyway. I'm currently looking to upgrade. I'll have to mull this over....

Rick Hopefully with Italeri bringing out the CR42 in 1/48 we might see a few more Italian A/C from WWII. After all, they've also just brought out an Autoblinda armoured car in 1/35, so there must be a market for some of the more esoteric Italian vehicles and planes.

I wouldn't mind a nice Fiat G50, always liked the look of that little fighter.

Matthew I was looking at the Hasa Veltro the other week in the LHS, a very tempting proposition.

I am back from the dead....It's been about three weeks since I posted to this GB forum, but I haven't forgotten all you hardy souls. It has been absolutely insane at work lately but I'm enjoying it much more than my old job...it's just a little tiring and hard to break away from sleep/eat/work cycles to get a chance to post. I haven't even really had time to work on any a/c in about two weeks. I'm eagerly awaiting the start of this and other GBs i'm involved in this autumn.

Luftwaffe, I will add you to the list.

Hope everyone is doing well and I look forward to seeing this GB in full swing in about six weeks.

Not long to go now.

I've been in a quandary over the last few weeks on whether to go with the Classic Airframes kit, or stay with the Italeri as originally intended.

Having looked at the CA kit, I was certainly impressed by both the resin and the PE components, neither or which appear to be available for the Italeri kit. Neither kit has the right decals either, which would mean picking up a set of Sky decals, no hardship as they're only a fiver.

My LHS stocks both kits, so his might come down to a decision on the day.

Karl, based on the reviews I've read, the CA kit has more detail, especially in the cockpit, but the Italeri kit is a much easier build. I haven't built either, but I did pick up the Italeri kit & it looks very nice in the box. I looked at the CA kit, but the PE cockpit just looked too fiddly for me. I'm sure either will build into a great model, but all bipes require more TLC than the average kit.

Rick having started on my 109 G10 with all the Eduard PE, I'm not sure I fancy the CA kit directly afterwards. The main thing I want to focus on with this kit is going to be the camo, as lookig forward to strecting my AB skills with some RA camo patterns.

Looks like we are go for starting this build. I'm glad we decided to delay the start of this one somewhat, because as you may notice from my lack of posting lately I have been unbelievably busy at work and haven't touched a model in about five weeks. I've just been so tired when I get home from work that all I can do is eat and go to sleep. 80 hour work weeks will do that to you. The light at the end of the tunnel is, however, that beginning oct 1 I have about eight weeks of less busy time in which to work on this gb and the pearl harbor gb. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's progress. I'll probably have to borrow a decent digital camera to show you all my progress on the Veltro when I get started. It should really be an exciting group build. I'm going to post a little message over on the a/c forum regarding our starting this GB finally. Hope everyone doesn't mind. Good luck everyone and let's get started building!!!

Matt I picked up the Italeri CR 42 on Monday, absolutely stunning kit, really looking forward to starting the build later in the month. I've got a pesky Hobbycraft MS406 to complete before I start on the CR 42.

Hi,
I'll be in. I might do a 109 (again) but I'll let the decision hang for a little while.
Cheers
Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Should get a chance to start the CR42 towards the middle of October, then hopefully we'll all be in a position to get this GB going.

This is looking a bit like a one man GB!Sad [:(]

Anyway, the CR42 is out of the box, I've cleaned up the cockpit parts and dry fitted them all. Ended up cutting the pedal hoops of the rudder bar, as photos of the real thing don't show them. The wings are all glued together and are awaiting clean up.

Altogether this looks like a great little kit. I spent about an hour last night cleaning up the engine which is comprised of 6 parts, crankcase front, two banks of cylinders, rear push rods, and two sets of exhausts. Having dry fitted the engine it lookes stunning, just needing an ignition harness and careful painting.

Painting will probably start next weekend, at which point I'll post some pics.

Karl, I was beginning to think it was a " No Man" GB Smile [:)]. Good luck on the C.R. 42. I have the unbuilt kit in my stash & will follow your trials & tribulations with great interest.

The CR42 is moving along steadily.

The pit is built and painted, it just needs a coat of matt varnish prior to final assembly, then I'll be able to close up the fuselage halves.

The engine is built and painted, I've added the oil feed pipes from the oil pump at the bottom of the crank case, and a manufacturer's plate made from masking tape painted brass. Overall the engine is pretty good straight out of the box.

No pictures yet, hopefully in the next few days.

I am building my 1st ever Italian A/C, a Hasegawa Veltro and had a question so I figured….go to the Regia Aeronautica Group Build to ask. Then I figured… what the heck, I may as well join the GBWink [;)] since it only started a month-ish ago, and I only started the build Friday, so, mpatric, can you please tack me on the list. Kit will be OOB except the decals.

Beside the fact I want to be somewhat diverse in what I build, and I have never built an Italian plane before, I am building this around a single component. I saw Mike Grant Decals has a smoke ring camo sheet and I thought what a cool idea. Let’s give it a try so I am building the plane so I can try the product.

Finally my question. I am going by the color suggestions, mostly, on the kit instruction sheet. Is everything on the underside blue? Bottom of the fuselage, LG doors inside and out, the LG struts, hubs… I think the sheet has it all lt. blue. Is this right?

Marc Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the GB.

I saw a review of those decals on Hyperscale a few weeks back, they look great. I look forward to seeing your progress.

As for me I've pretty much finished the pit and engine...

I need to touch in around the dials with some matt varnish.

The belts aren't accurate, I just used a set of Luftwaffe belts I had in the spares box. Unfortunately I didn't even have a full set of those, so let's just imaging that the other lap belt has fallen down the side of the seat!

The engine is pretty much OOB, apart from the oil feed lines added from fuse wire, and the maker's plate on the side of the crank case. I didn't bother with an ignition harness as this sat to the rear of the engine out of sight.

Apologies for the photo quality but my old 2 mega pixel Kodak can't deal with close ups. roll on a new Samsung 5.2 mega pixel job, with 3x optical zoom.

What's up...back from the dead. Have been working on my Veltro on and off mixed with my B5N2 kate for the Pearl harbor GB. That deadline's sooner than this one so I've put more time into that one. However I am making some decent progress on the Veltro. I'm about 3/4 done with the cockpit. Here's a question for the other Veltro builders, past or present, for this GB. What type of paint (enamel vs acrylic) did you use? I was planning on going for gunze sangyo acrylics or perhaps tamiya acrylics. What colors did you use? I'm not too proficient in very small airbrushing techniques like the box and direction photos suggest, so I might use some creative license for this. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Matt I generally use Gunze acrylics, thinned with Tamiya acrylic thinner, as these give me really good results, however for this build I'm using Lifecolor paints from Italy. Being Italian, they have a really good selection of RA colours, both external and internal.

As or airbrushing cockpits, i generally AB the base colour, in my case 'Italian Interior Green' then hand painted the rest, such as the panels and control stick, followed up by a coat of Future and a wash. Once all that is done, I simply give it all a coat of Gunze matt varnish.

Progress Update

The cockpit is now glued into the port fuselage half, as is the tail wheel. The head rest part was way too long and had to be cut down to clear the top of the seat. Don't think I did anything wrong, but you never know with me.

I've also added blanking plates behind the oil cooler intakes, and a section of plasticard behind the IP to cover the ugly fuselage joint.

Pictures to follow later.

Nice work so far Karl. I ordered the Eduard PE detail set for my CR42, but haven't received it yet. Think I'll save the kit for the next BOB GB.

It would be a good candidate for the next NAGB as well. This one's going to represent a machine based in Libya in August 42.

I looked at the Eduard PE , but figured I'd have a go at an OOB build for a change. You never know I might end up doing another for the NAGB myself.

I debated about PE for this GB but decided to axe that idea and try to make the cockpit look as good as I could OOB. Plus I'm a little frustrated with those silly little metal pieces lately.

Got the smoke ring decals from Mike Grant Decals in the mail today. Beautiful printing... really looks like free hand AB rings. Paint goes down tonight. Going to try something new. I put a piece of bare metal foil on the panel of the wing root where a pilot would logically get his foot up to climb on the wing. After the paint has cure I will wear it away with a buffing wheel and some plastic polish for the worn spot. We'll see how it turns out. Anyone ever try this?
