Ok, I am finally calling my cockpit done. I beg your forgiveness at the overposting, but I couldn't decide which pictures I like best. Anyway, it has elements of the eduard basic color pe set and placard set. Both have small little tiny parts that I just couldn't get to agree with me, but I used what I could. I really like the placards and think they add a lot, but quite a few of them look like just plain black rectangles (you can't distinguish any writing). Don't get me wrong, I really like them, but if you have ever seen waldron placards, I don't think the eduard sets are the same level, and waldron's closing :-(.

Anyway, here are the pictures.

Hope all is well.
Leon

Looks great Darren. I really like the plumbing you put in the wheelwells. That is definitely something to be proud of. Was it pe or all your doing? Your build is really coming together and is going to look very nice with the markings you chose! Almost there... :-)

Hello Chaps!

First an apology........those decals are made by Eagle Strike, not Aeromaster. My mistake, sorry!
As for last night, I think I did OK, I have all the stores except for the bombs on the wings now and the undercarridge is almost done.
Here's a couple of pics to show you what I've been up to. Bear in mind that a dull coat needs to be put on the wheel wells before they are complete, however you can now see the wiring I've done-I won't be doing that again fdor a while.....
The other shot shows the stores and weathering I've done, and yes I know I still need to weather the dropped flaps-don't worry I won't leave it looking like that!
See you all later,

Darren.

Hey fellas, thanks for your encouragement and kind words. I'm really enjoying this build and being part of this group makes it all the more better. Now I know the next logical step is to put the decals on, however I have spent todays time completing all the wiring inside the wheel wells and touching up the underside of the airframe-by my standards I think its turned out well. When I'm done this evening I'll post pics to show you how it went. I've also painted up the stores, if I can get them and the undercarridge on tonight I would have done well.

Leon,

I tried a new wash for this build, I've used raw umber watercolour thinned down. When thin enough, it flows through the recess's quite nicely and goes well with the OD paintwork. For the underside, I used a burnt sienna colour.
As for the markings, they are from Aeromaster and look like this:

Happy modelling!

Darren.

That does look good Darren. Keep it up! I like the dropped flaps. That's something that I wish was more common in 1/72 scale.

Hi everyone,

I did the weathering today and dropped the flaps. I like the way the wash dried as it gives a patchy /used look. I'll  get another coat of gloss on tomorrow and start looking at that nice decal sheet I bought.
Let me know what you think...

Darren.

Cool, Marc (aka Wingnut) is going to hook me up so hopefully I'll be able to piece together an instrument panel worthy of the rest of the cockpit.  Thanks Marc!

Darren, The stripe look good from here. I think I might attempt mine this weekendBlack Eye [B)]

Marc, I use future as a under coat also and I have had no Ill effects. Last nite I sprayed the top side of my bird and waited maybe 20 min. and masked her off to do the tail and cowl in a differnt color. When I removed the mask I did pull up some paint, one thing I did not do this time was reduce the tac on my tape with the oil from my hands and face. maybe I should had just gone ahead and waited 24hrs before I masked her. Oh well live and learn.

Hopefully Marc's option will work well for you. I imagine you will drill out the instruments and put the film behind. The hope is that all the instruments line up perfectly. If not squadron.com has some relatively cheap basic pe sets (looks like for academy and hasegawa), but if all you are using is the ip, I imagine they would work ok too. Anyway, good luck and let us know how it all turns out.

Thanks Jerry! Now, I have a question to ask.....I am posing my model with its flaps down and I have now just painted them with OD green and invasion stripes. But what about the part that sits inside the wing? Its exposed when the flaps are lowered and my research shows it to be a bare metal on bubble tops. However as I'm building a Razorback, was that bit painted as the rest of the airframe or was it interior yellow/green? Any thoughts on this would be most welcome.. Darren.

That's a good one, I guess either way would be alright.

I have an Alclad question that has probably been asked a few times before.  Swanny uses gloss black as an under coat and others use future.  Is it a “gloss black” thing or is it just a “gloss” thing?   If it a gloss thing, what about polishing the plastic?   Is the finish sturdy, as in can it be handled and masked for invasion stripes etc.?

Marc. you must first apply a barrier coat, if you will, to protect the plastic from the Alclad solvents.  Alclad over bare plastics is way too aggresive and  will craze the surface.  The gloss black serves as a barrier coat. The color black is really only recommended under Chrome and polished aluminum shades of Alclad although works well under any shade.  Also some guys, including me, use Future sometimes. Just about any good, hard, glossy, and cured paint would work under Alclad.

And, yes...Alclad is very tough stuff, and can safely be masked over almost immediately.

Ran into a little snag with the decals for the instrument panel, it just would not get in position correctly nor would it hunker down on the panel as it kept getting stuck on the raised details of the plastic instrument piece.  Eventually, the decal just disintegrated as I was trying to position it.  I think at this point I'm going to have to very carefully dry brush the instruments.  I hope that works since I feel really good about the way the rest of the cockpit looks.

Bummer! I really hope it turns out for you. A dry brushing should look fine. Another option is a cheap PE set which give excellent detail, but I would atleast try the dry brushing first. Good luck.

Glad the stripes look OK-thanks fellas.

Marc,

as far as I remember, you need gloss black undercoat. Its recommended by Alclad but I can't tell why it has to be that particular paint. Anyone else know?

Darren.

P.S. I've just finished my Airfix Seafire in the Aircraft forum-check it out!

Masking tape off-Gloss coat on!

Yes folks, at long last here she is in her stripes! I will own up now and tell you that I am not entirely happy as I have not got the stripes "spot-on" however, not every set of D-day stripes was painted straight in real life. Well... thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
I am happy with the OD paint though, the fade effect is showing through the gloss coat and I hope it does'nt blend too much by the time I'm finished. Anyway..enough of my waffling-here's some pics,

Later,

Darren.

Thanks for the kind words fellas, I have done a little touching up here and there with the airbrush and my T-bolt is ready for some gloss. I'll post pics later on tonight. I can't wait to get the wash and undercarridge done so I can start to see the model come together.
See you later,

Darren.
