Great job Darren.  I agree with Matt in the other thread... nice touch with the fuse wire.  You got some schmutz (spellingConfused [%-)]) on the rear view mirror.

m'nerd---- great job onthat engine and the wiring

FINISHED!

Here she is fella's my Tamiya P-47D Razorback "Boog" I added the Eduard PE sets and Eagle Strike decals to complete the model. I have really enjoyed this build, even though I've had  plenty of problems with it,(of my own making) I have learnt a lot of new techniques and  made some new friends too.  Thanks to all  of you for your good advice  and encouragement. Comments good, bad or ugly will be most welcome. Hope you like her.........

Darren.

Hi Leon,

My batteries are nearly charged so pics will be on here soon. I managed to eliminate most of the fogging by spraying on another gloss coat, then I toned it down with a couple of satin coats. The rest of the problem area's I touched up by hand. It looks OK, rather than great. Still, at least its not ruined. I'll look forward to everyone's feedback.

See you later,

Darren.

ModelNerd, The engine looks great. In my opinion the extra work is definately worth it. Sure most people who look at your build as it lives on a shelf may never know of the extra time you put in, but everytime you look at it, you will examine it closer and remember all that you put in to it and feel pride at how the little touches will work toward a great overall build...So in summary - nice work! :-)

Darren, I'm very excited to see your finished build. What was the final result / solution to the final coat fogging? I hate when it seems you are doing things right and then for no reason - boom.
BTW, thanks for the complement on my p-47; I really appreciate it!

Nice work on the engine-it looks good! I have finished my build and when I went to take some pics the batteries on my camera ran out. So I will put some pics up tomorrow. My razorback did'nt turn out as nice as I would have liked, but I will build another as I love this aircraft so much.

I saw Leon's Razorback on hyperscale, it looks fantastic! I am so jealous of his talent, maybe one day I'll build a model like that.

See you all tomorrow,

Darren.

Here's a shot of the Tamiya kit's R-2800 radial engine. I thought it would be torturous fun if I tried to plumb the ignition leads. I used very fine copper wire, and anchored them with CA glue into holes drilled with a pin vise. I didn't do the back row of cylinders, since you can see them even less than the front row when installed into the cowl. In fact after determining how little you CAN see, I wonder if it was really worth it to go the extra mile(!)

I've just looked at the dry matt coat, its gone white....all over. I'm starting to think is this worth carrying on. I've sprayed a gloss coat on top, some of the white is drying clear. Any ideas?

I'm really fed up now, I need some advice if the gloss does'nt work.

See you later,

Darren.

Thanks Marc, I'm really gutted as I've spent a lot of time on this one. I will try your idea tomorrow and see what occurs. Thanks for your help,

Darren

Man that bites.   Try taking a new #11 blade and tap with the point all over just hard enough to make little invisible holes in the decal, and make cuts along any panel lines.  Apply some Future.  I work it in by taking a cotton swap soaked in Future and pressing it into the surface or even rolling it from side to side over the decal while pressing down.

Disaster! I have just sprayed the matt coat on my T-bolt and half the decals have silvered! I'm really annoyed with myself, I did all the things I usually do and I don't understand what went wrong.
I put a good gloss coat on, then the decals with microset/sol then another gloss coat to seal them in. Then the matt coat went on, and there was the silvering.........
I'm so disappointed as this was going to be a "good one". Anyone got any ideas on how I may be able to fix it?

Darren.

Scott.... I just posted this in the Alternatives to Waldron punch and die set thread...and it seems Greatmodels is doing to you what they do best...

If the puch set is for the occasional IP this may work for ya.

===============================
Found this Mini Punch Set, by LF Tandy, at AC Moore for $8 this morning.  5/64 the smallest up to 11/64.  Just a metal barrel with changeable tips.

The small one worked great for cutting out small instruments.  These instruments are the smallest ones on a Mike grant 1/48 IP decal sheet.

So I have to revise what I said in the previous post.  1/8” is huge.  The instruments in the pics are about ½ that.

Dragonfly - Greatmodels price for the Waldron punch set is $49.95 (there is also a supermini set for $99.59)

Gwaihir - Ya, I'm pretty much dead in the water until my punch set arrives.  In the mean time I'm finishing up my FW190 for hte Battle for Germany GB and my Wildcat for the Carrier GB.

Looks great Jean. Your seatbelts are tempting to try that method. I think they look great and would be much cheaper than having to buy an aftermarket photoetch set.

I can't wait to see more of your build. I'm guessing you're going to do joy boy before the crash ??

Hi,

I think I've found how to post pictures.
Let's try.

Here's Joy Boy after a mid-air collision in march 1945.

Here are 2 pictures for Joy Boy's cokpit.

The cockpit is made stock from the model.
I only added the oxygen hose.
For the seatbelts I used the decal with the kit, applied to lead foil then cut.

Please note that I'm returning to the hobby after a 23 years break!!!
I'm slowly relearning things...

All the best.

Hi,

I'd like to join in.
I just began a P-47M from Tamiya.

It'll be HV*P or Q "Joy Boy" from 61stFS/56thFG in 1945.
Blueish black topside and natural metal belly.
Superscale decal 48-940

Now for the stupid questions. I checked the FAQ and I can't find any clear answers.
- how do you post a new thread?
- how to you attach pictures?
Thanks.

All the best.

Jean

Add me in also please.
I am building the Tamiya P-47D as Gabby Gabreski's WolfPack model using the Aero Master 48-660 decal sheet.

Modelnerd, Welcome to the build. It'll be great to see your thunderbolt develop.

Espins1, Bummer. Does that mean you are stuck in limbo or are there other things you can do in the meantime. You were waiting to use it for the instruments right?

Sigh, just checked the order status on my Waldron Punch Set from Greatmodels, it's still on order and hasn't shipped.  On the status is says "Searching for / Special Orders".  So I'm assuming they don't have it in stock yet and that it's still awaiting arrival from their special order.  Sad [:(]

Just curious....what is Great Models asking for that punch set??

Marc, 'Tarheel Hal' looks great. If there are mistakes there you're right - the camera hides them, because it looks real sweet to me! So what's next for you?

Anway, nice work.

I'll say it again, that's one outstanding build Marc. I gather you had some trouble with the decals but it looks like you won out in the end. Outstanding as usual my friend. Are you losing hair too?
