Jeff that looks fantastic, you know no matter how many aircraft I build it still never ceases to be amaze me what a transformation decals can make to a kit.  Looking forward to some more progress pics.

All, I have a question that's been bugging me since I had a look at Mike V's completed build.  In a P-47D Bubbletop what color should the area directly behind the pilots armored headrest be?  Should it be the same color as the cockpit or should it be the same color as exterior color that surrounds it?  My thinking at this stage is to go with the exterior color, but any thoughts would be appreciated.

As to my progress, well things have been a little slow due to that fact that I've been a bit off color for the last couple of days.  About the only progress I have made is to gloss coat the cockpit in preparation for a wash.

Cheers

Darren - unless it's NMF I have always seen it the same color as the exterior.  If NMF then the color of the anitglare stripe..

Jeff, Your build is looking good.

Darren, I've also seem what Tom has. Now as for the color under the window just aft the cockpit on a razorback...that seems to be argued to no end.

Since mine is a "what if" build  I was playing around in word today and got the name done as well as the nose art, now all I need is the new ink cartridge to arrive by FedEx to print them. Hope temps are a little cooler tomorrow (was 95 today) so I can open up my apartment and paint

While we're on the "proper color" issue, I'm about to start my 1/48 Tamiya Razorback (ultracast seat is in the mail). Are all the colors called out on the Tamiya instruction sheet accurate, or is there anything I should know? I'll be doing a NMF P-47D called "Fightin' Gator".

OK I'm going to go out on a limb here and try and answer this one.  In my opinion the color callouts on the Tamiya instructions are alright in some things but just plain wrong in lots of others.  My main complaint is the engine area including the cowling (inside); check your references for some more accurate colors.

The cockpit detail colors are OK but I prefer using XF-26 Deep Green for P-47 cockpits as I find this makes a good eyeball match for Republic's Dark Dull Green.  Aside from that here are some reference shots of a P-47D-30-RA Bubbletop that was in service at a US Air Force base when it was taken off the line and place in storage for the museum of aviation in Warner Robins, Georgia.  All details in the cockpit as they were when the aircraft was in service.  Note that P-47s built by Republic left the factory with cockpits painted Dull Dark Green rather than Chromate Green as used by Curtis.

Oh and as to the color directly behind the cockpit on the razorback, I think from this shot "Fightin' Gator" should be NM

Just two days ago I did the inside of the cowling like the instructions say. It's not too late...can you help me...? What would you suggest changing it to?

Thanks for any help.

Leon I have just looked again at the instructions for my Tamiya P-47 Bubbletop and I realised I made a bit of a mistake.  I was reading the Tamiya callout of AS-7 as Bare Metal Silver not Neutral Gray which is why I thought their cowling colors were up the creek.

As it is a cowling interior of Chromate Yellow and Neutral Grey is just fine, sorry for the confusion.

On the clor question, I had a hard time finding color photo's from the "war years" most color photo's are of restored birds and I don't know how accurate they are

John same goes for me, I have some really nice color shots of WWII P-47s, just post what you need and I'll see if I've got it.

All I am painting up my Tamiya 1/48 P-47 at the moment and I' struck a little snag.  I seem to have somehow lost the pilot’s seat from the sprue.  So does anyone have a spare seat for a Tamiya P-47 that they no longer need that they'd be willing to send to me?  I'd be more than happy to pay for postage and would be extremely grateful, otherwise it looks like an order to Ultracast coming up.

Cheers

Tamiya Flat Coat is not meant to be used straight like that, thus the results, most likely you will need to strip it and repaint. Tamiya Flat Coat it meant to be mixed with gloss paint to make it flat.

Thanks all for your offers for color help, settled on interior green for the clockpit area with yellow zinc chromate for wheel wells etc., insided cowl was left natural metal due to engine heat, only color I am not sure of is the firewall behind the engine.

repainted, however, one thing leads to another...now i have stripped some of the decals with the masking tape ...aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhh....oh well now i know about flat coat...seems to be a stupid name for something you dont put on as a coat, but use as a mixer.

It is NOT called "Flat coat" it is called, "Flat base" which implies that it needs to be added to another product such as Future.

dohhhh ....... yep got that all wrong ...Tamiya X-21 is indeed Flat base I was thinking it was the matt equivelent to X-22 which is a gloss finish...bahhhh.... i was going to use Humbrol Matt Cote (strange spelling I know suspcet a french conection there) but it is spirit baed so hate all the bother with that ...wish i had used it now. Anyway going back to Flat Base X-21 I am now assuming that I can add that to any acrylic gloss finish and it will turn it matt such as Future or for example X-22 Clear, so at least I have learned something from this build and just about recovered the situation. Hmmmm why cant they write user instructions on the bottle?????? would be much more useful than telling me not to drink it or pour it in my eyes !!!!!!

Jeff, tough luck on the speed bump, that hurts. For what it's worth, I've been using Microscale Micro Satin and am happy with the results, cleans up with water too. Just my My 2 cents [2c]

Thanks for the advice and support guys .....all back on track now Thumbs Up [tup]repainted the antiglare stripe and replaced the damaged decals(had some spare stars and bars). Well you know this is the great advantage of the group build if i had been doing this on my own i think it would have been out the window with a firecracker up its tail pipe Evil [}:)]

Jeff,

If you can find it, try some Poly Scale flat, it is the best flat out there in my opinion. Wink [;)]
