2006 F/A-18 Super Hornet GB
Posted by osjohnm on Monday, September 5, 2005 1:09 PM

Hi all

With all the super hornet kits arriving on the market in 1/48 and those already available in 1/72 and 1/48 I figured it might be a good time to give this subject a bash.

I was thinking, start in January 2006(negotiable) and we can work out the end date once we have an idea of how many participants there are.

I think this start date will allow for people to finish off their current GB commitments and allow them to gather all the info, kits, AM goodies etc required.

Rules:
- any scale
- AM etc allowed
- must be a super hornet, E/F and G(if released in time) allowed
- "what ifs" allowed
- post progress pics (hmmm...suppose thats a given)Blush [:I]
- most importantly have FUN! Big Smile [:D]

Build List:

osjohnm - 1/48 RM F/A-18E VFA-143
bstrump - 1/72 Hasegawa F/A-18F
burn16v - 1/72 Haseagaw F/a-18E/F

kolja94 - 1/48 EF-18G
blkhwkmatt - 1/72 Hasegawa F/A-18E/F
ga.modeller - 1/72 F/A-18E VF-143, F VFA-2, G?
willjanuary - ????
a6efan - 1/48 Hasegawa F/A-18F VX-4
mississippivol - 1/48 RM F/A-18E
loftycomfort - 1/48 Hasegawa F/A-18F
bosshaus - 1/48 F/A-18E                                                                              kstater94 - 1/48 F/A-18E VFA-22                                                                     seyahmit 1/72 and 1/48                                                                                  yeehah1 - 1/48 RoG F/A-18E VX-9

I'll do a G - whether it's released or not!

Though, any G squadron markings would, even in 2006 be more or less "what if"... so THAT might be a little confusing...

Kolja94, good point. Maybe I should allow what-ifs but limit it to USN markings?
How does that sound?

This is tempting - not actually my area but I drive past Lakenheath (UK) most weekends and have seen the occasional Hornet in the distance - never moves - cardboard cutout? Hence builkding a model might reveal more. It is an enormous base with an F100 as the gate guardian and a golf course. I have had a look at the odd website but does anyone know much about Lakenheath as it is today - seems to employ a lot of folk but not much movement save 9-5 Mon Fri. Just interested....... Nearby Mildenhall seems a little more livley and Marham buzzes now and again.

I wasn't going to do anything too outlandish anyway - just take a left over 1/48 EA-6B set and put it on my (kitbashed if necesarry) -18G. So, if a VAQ-1XX EA-18G doesn't cause any offense I should be good Big Smile [:D]

Sounds like a neat idea and the time frame is OK too. I'm tempted to join with the Hasegawa 1/72 scale kit. I have markings for VFA-102's 50th Anniversary or the new VFA-103 scheme using Hobbydecal's dry transfer set.

Come to think of it, TwoBobs' D-Back 50th Anniversary markings should be in my mailbox any day now...

Kolja, I'm sure nobody is going mind.

www.greatmodels.com have a cutting edge set for the G but it seems to only contain pods and they're taking pre-orders for the italeri EF-18G all in 48th scale.

Not sure how it compares to the latest offers from RM and Hasegawa.

So how many members do we need in order to call this a GB?

Oh, alright then ... nothing like sibling pressure .... might as well get those two 1/72 Hasegawa kits out of their boxes.

Count me in with one E and one F.

Alright, I've got the build list started. Will update as we go along, still early days so I'm sure we'll have more members closer to the start date.

burn16v is working on a badge.

miduppergunner, I always thought that F-15Es were based at Lakenheath, had no idea there were hornets there. Perhaps someone on the aircraft forum will know more.

Sign me up!!!!!!!
sounds like a blast to me, I have both the E and F Hase kits in 1/72 and I have been looking forward to building them.

Right now just for the "F" I'll let you know if I'll want to add the E as well.

good to have you aboard ga.modeller

ga.modeller, 15 superbugs in your stash, WOW! i have some catching up to do.

Everybody, ga.modeller has twisted my rubber arm. I've changed the rules to allow what if builds, regardless of markings. a bit of colour might add some variety to the build.

Everybody happy with that?

The first potential GB badge is ready, photobucket is down for maintenance, will upload later

Hi all

Below you will find 3 possible choices on GB badges, I thought that everyone can give their opinion on which one they think we should use. The image with majority vote will then be resized according to the new badge rules.

Option 1:

Option 2:

Option 3:

My vote is for option 1, let me know what you guys think.

Mark one up for #3!!!

Think that I'm kinda partial to the F model anyway, that two seat cockpit makes the jet look more mean to me!!!

My vote is for #3. It'll be interesting to see how these badges look when downsized to forum standards.

So number 3 is leading the charge.....

Bstrump, if you save the images and then use XP's view thumbnails option, you get an idea of what the badge would look like scaled down.

Actually, I played with it just after I posted using Microsoft Picture-It and it looks OK sized to the 65 pixel height.

Well, as author, i am somewhat biased, but i must agree that of the original 16 options that i gave to John, it has to be either #1 or #3 for me, and i'm leaning towards 3.

bstrump, i created them with an ideal size of 105x70, hence the 525x350 original size ... didn't realise that it was supposed to be 65 height, but they should still scale quite well.

Welcome aboard willjanuary.

Apparently I'm surrounded by a bunch of "F" fanatics.....Big Smile [:D]

Hopefully I'll have some "E" supporters by January.

Heck, at the is rate if Revell have released their 1/48 F kit in time I might even go over to the dark side and build an F instead of an E.....Whistling [:-^]

Ok then badge 3 it is, you can find it here:

John,

I do have the "E" kit as well from Hasegawa, so I guess that you could sign me up for both, I'll build them together, most likely OOB.
So there is another E type for you!!!

Sounds greta to me Karl! Count me in for a Hasegawa 1/48 'F' as a "what if" VX-4 F-18F armed with AIM-54 Phoenix on the inboard pylons! This is going to be cool!Thumbs Up [tup]
