Dave,

Beautiful work.

I'm building the Early L/48 for the other group build.  These kits are outstanding.

I've got the dark sand sprayed.  I went for a three shaded approach before  I got the reply not to. Next is the camo pattern, I think I'll go for a very tight soft edge.

I finished off my Jgpz IV L/70 tonight and will try and get the pix up tomorrow. Better late then never.

Tony I would love to join you but I have other stuff that I need to get off my bench first.

Duke, your builds look great as always.  Can't wait to start my Sherman now that I've seen yours but I guess I should finish the build for this one first.  Hope to get some time in this weekend (if the missus' will let me take a break from the home renovations).

I really enjoyed the tight timeframe for this GB. Got me out of my lethargy. Anyway, I thought I might do another quick build, and since the Light Armor GB seems to be travelling slowly right now, thought I'd set myself a goal of completing the build within one calendar month, with photos on the way.
Therefore, it's one Tamiya Daimler Armored Car by 13 August.
Does anyone care to join me ?

Guys Great work Love the sherman Duke and that lil Lee & panzer are bolth coming out nice as well Rooster Heck EVERYONE'S builds look great thats what I love about small scale armor the size is a challenge but when you finnish a really good job on one everyone sees the pic and say "Thats 1/72 scale? Thanks Grant! I have almost 1000 models built already.

The Dragon kit was a sweet build. I had a great time assembling this one and it is a breeze to paint. I highly recommend it.

Nice work Pog! I like that set up. Keep those pics coming!

Tax, you could always use a small flat-bladed jewelers screwdriver to do your Zimm. . Good luck with that. I''m doing mine without Zimm.

As for me, I only have pics of the Sherman since I got the most work done on it. I got this one ready for the final stages of construction, although looking at it here shows I still have several areras of touchup to do. The rust on the tracks will be toned down a bit once I give it a black and then a dark brown wash. Also, the hull isn't fastened down yet, so the gap still shows in front.

I also got a little work done on the 1/72 scale Italeri M-8, but not enough to justify taking pics.
I hope you like them, comments are welcome.

I'm onto a Jagdpanzer IV L/48 Lang for the German Armor GB now. It's the Hasegawa kit. The box art vehicle ha zimmerit, but the kit doesn't, so I'm thinking of ading some using Tamiya putty and some kind of pressing tool I'll have to come up with myself. Any ideas ?...

Tony,

Thanks for the kind words.

I like to keep things simple in this scale.  For my Panzer IV, I used a brush painted coat of Tamiya Hull Red over primer.  To make them look metal, I did a heavy drybrush of "steel".

For steel, I use an acrylic paste paint in silver metallic mixed with Tamiya Black.  My trick is to not make them look too rusty...just in the low spots.

For zimmerit, I've used squadron green mixed with plastic cement.  I used the Tamiya zimmerit tool to make it.  It took a long time.  I'm soon going to try to melt the plastic with a wood burner or a soldering iron with an improvised tip.  It looks like the most interesting method.

Did you know that Hasegawa makes that kit with an add-on PE zimmerit package?  The kit costs around $20.  Eduard also sells add-on PE zimmerit.

Below are the Mirage M3 (half built) and the Hasegawa M3

The Mirage M3 is a finer kit all together.  The only real problems that I had with it were the connection between the transmission cover and the upper hull, the right side of the cupola, and the air cleaners in the back not fitting so well.  The rivet detal is neat, and the kit comes with 3 main gun options and 5 markings options.

For me, there was a 1mm gap between the transmission cover and the upper hull.  The right side of the cupola is a little fragile and is very difficult to place.  I bent mine and a gap was created.  The air cleaners needed to be trimmed prior to placement.

Here is my old Hasegawa Panzer IV G built in 1999.

Here are some better photos of my Hasegawa Panzer IV F2.  Not bad for paint, decals, and weathering in one day.

Thanks, DM. Due, in part, to my Badger 155 Anthem. I would have preferred to use my ancient Thayer & Chandler sidefeed, but I don't like to use it with enamels if I can help it, and I used enamel for the interior. The exterior is all Gunze Sangyo so far (whatever the ones are for German armour- something in the 400s).

I have a Badger 360, but I clearly haven't mastered it yet, because I can get finer lines with the 155.

I wanted to use a Paasche VL for the interior, but I mislaid my Paasche hose. Why can't all airbrushes use the same fittings??

Thanks, Tony. I've gone a bit overboard on Jagdpanthers lately, having bought a couple of Dragon 1:72 kits, and a Dragon 1:35 kit, and I'm doing the interior of an old Tamiya clunker, as well.

I'm happy with the way the StuG is coming along, though. I can even overlook its serious deficiencies!

Did I mention that I might use the excellent figures from the Dragon E-100???

Right now, with olivgruen oversprayed (freehand) over dunkelgelb ...

and to compare for size (and effect of a dark wash!) with my recently-completed Revell (Matchbox) 1:76 Jagdpanther:

I would have sprayed the schokoladebraun, but the History Channel had two hours of WWI action on - Verdun and Somme.

Hi all.  I finished the Hasegawa Panzer IV F2 with a few minutes to spare.  Not bad since it was only a primed bunch of subassemblies this morning.  I've included before and after pics (both poor quality) of it.

There were no real hangups with the IV F2 except for the fact that I could not build it without connecting the top half to the bottom half efficiently.  No big problem though since the tracks went on easily (this time).

Panzer IV F2 with 4 coats of Tamiya Dark Yellow and the panzer IVG for reference

Finished panzer with the M3 and the panzer IVG

In the photos are an old Panzer IV G (pretty much the same kit), and my M3 Lee.

The M3 gave me problems in week 1, so I pretty much benched it to finish the panzer.  I'll finish the M3 lee this week as its "week 2".  I really can't wait to get the goofy looking markings on it.

I have a photo of it somewhere, but I'd prefer to "update" the model before I display it here. I have weathered it using pastels, but I really should give it another wash and repastel it (I made it some time ago).

However, I did take a photo earlier of my Nashorn, which I could have easily finished on time for this build if I'd concentrated on it rather than the StuG IV.

That's a very clean build, Tony. Is that supposed to be a France 1940 machine? I've seen unit markings like that on Poland vehicles, but of course they only used plain white crosses.

I'll dig up my Airfix SdKfz 222 for a quick comparison, although I'm sure it will come out rather poorly!

I didn't stay up very late last night.

However, I did manage to get this far:

I'll now draw on the privilege of using the 2-week time period starting from when I actually started on this kit, which will give me until Monday to complete it (and I should do it within a few coats of GS acrylics).

I lied. I used Modelmaster Enamel Light Ivory to paint the interior. That's all dry now. I'll paint the exterior without cementing the hull to the superstructure, so I can paint some details later. I have 3.5hours of Friday left ... but I didn't get back to NZ until Monday two weeks ago...

I've got tomorrow off, so I'll see what I can pull together.

I'll most likely finish the Panzer IV.  The Lee may be a little difficult.

I have today free, so I'll be using some acrylics to paint the interior, and exterior. I might use the crew figures from a Hasegawa Tiger I, but if I do, a lot of the interior detail will be invisible ... which, I'd have to say, would be a shame, as I think the interior, for all its roughness, is better than the exterior <G>.

Yeah, I usually have mine done in this amount of time, but I have been so busy with so much it's been real hard to get anything done. Dont worry about the deadline guysBig Smile [:D] as I said it's not written in blood the object is to see What you can do given a 2 week timeperiod. after that take your time and finish your kit the way you like itWink [;)]

BTW on the plan for the "Braille Scale Armor Winter Vacation GB 06-07" it will be a full month of working time Dec1st,06 through Jan 1st,07 or maybe even 2 months but the challenge will be to build your kit in a winter setup be it painted cammo faded whitewash or as the americans used in desperation even white sheets it should be interestingWink [;)]Mischief [:-,]

Looking good guys. I miht have to try one of those M20s.

I've got a wash done, and the decals on my Sd Kfz 123, still needs a flat coat, some dry brushing, the tyres done, soe dirt, probably some more dirt...
I hate to say it, but I'm not sure I can finish by the 30th.
I'd be confident of the 1st or 2nd, but I really set myself the challenge.
Cheers

Outstanding Brews! Man, when you build them, you build them!

Well, I managed to get more done on the Sherman. It is basecoated and some of the details are already painted as well. I just need to touch things up a bit:

I also did a bit of work on the M-8 Armored Car It is also basecoated; I just need to finish the details:

This one hit the ground at Dragon Expo when I brought it in. Someone in Custodial swept up my ammo box that is supposed to be attached to the Ma Duece; that was the only piece I couldn't find. Easy fix; I have pl-aenty of ammo boxes to spare.

Comments are welcome

Today, I chucked the gun barrel into a motor tool, and used a file to machine the muzzle brake closer to scale.

Here's the latest pics (taken with my 3.2mp camera, rather than my 1mp phone):

Hi,
I've got all the grey on before work, now let it dry during the day and decals tonight, probably followed by a wash if its dry enough. That leaves dry brushing and flat coat and detail painting in the last two days.
Cheers

I've just sprayed in overall with 50:50  Tamiya German Grey and black. The next will be a lighter coat of German Grey followed by several lighter coats tomorrow to the uppersurfaces. Th difficult thing will be how much to let it dry before weathering, given the deadline.

Thanks Duke. I just passed a major personal milestone, which is the completion of the breech to my satisfaction. Again, I stress that this was not done to scale accuracy, but merely to provide the impression of realism.

I based the appearance on pictures and photographs, rather than plans and measurements. Accordingly, it's a bit rough, but as only a small part of it is visible through the hatches, it's fine for its purpose.

This will be finished by friday come hell or high water!

A few little trials and tribulations. SNAFU:)

I didn't paint yesterday, though I did fire up the compressor, which now has a full tank.

I noticed a picture of a StuG III with wheels so muddy that the Matchbox wheels wouldn't be wasted...

I continued with adding interior and zimmeritt using Milliputty. It started to go off before I was done, so I made a transmission case out of it. The intention of the interior is to add a "feel" of realism rather than outright scale accuracy.

Pics as promised:

My Reference

the superstructure interior - breech incomplete and unattached. Commanders episcopes to be added.

superstructure exterior

hull interior - still to come - gun mounting, drivers seats, gunner and loader's seats, ammo racks etc

My little armored car is built, although the radio antenna is incomplete, and I'll leave the wheels off until it's painted. It'a actually a really nice little kit, with some photoetched grilles. Paining to follow with pics.

Hang in there Brews!  This is only temporary having a spanner in the works. Just wait till the "Significant Other" goes to sleep! LOL! Mischief [:-,] I have no dubt you'll make it past all these issues and post pics of a fantastic model. I'll be posting a few more pics later myself

Right. Spanner in the works - "Significant other" refused to allow me to spray today grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Issues at hand at the moment, other than paint:

  • Decided to use kit bogies and return rollers in order to assure finish within 2 weeks. These have been cemented in place
  • Test-fitted AM tracks - these are too long, which is no real problem (superglueable tracks - thanks CMK!) but the kit drive sprocket width exceeds the tracks' allowance.
  • Decided to use kit tracks
  • Decided to amend appearance of lousy tracks and running gear by posing in a diorama whereby the vehicle is crossing a shallow watercourse. Water running off the vehicle and tracks will be simulated by glad wrap (or similar). This will allow me to use oils for the wetted surfaces.
  • The Extratech PE (including schurzen) would be wasted on this vehicle. I'll either thin down the kit skirts, or make new ones from either 5 or 10 thou card, or K&S Brass shims.
  • A see-through situation could exist between the hull upper and lower through the fighting compartment. Sheet styrene will be used to fix this.
  • The ventilation ducts over the engine compartment have only two partitions instead of three. This is a job for razor saw and 10thou card.
  • The kit wheels are "solid" - razor saw required to simulate "double" wheels.
  • Muzzle brake would suit a 122mm, rather than 75mm. Maybe this crew had seen "Kelly's Heroes". Perhaps I should find some loudspeakers and attach these to the superstructure.

Tomorrow, I will paint.I'm looking forward to this.

Hello all,

The kits look nice.  Here are my progress photos.  I didn't have paint on my trip to Canada (for fishing).

The panzer IV went together with no real big issues.

I'll have to say that the M3 is a bit of a disappointment.  The other Mirage kit that I've built went together with much less effort and superglue.  I'll keep it going though.

I have a little filler work to do on the M3 before I do a base coat.  The panzer will be base coated by tonight.

I apologize for not posting this sooner. I've been so busy preparing for Dragon Expo 2006.
I had started  on the 1/72 scale Dragon Sherman (76) with HVSS suspension a couple of days ago that I'd gotten from San Diego. I'd already assembled the bogies and sprockets on the lower hull back then. This evening after the Expo I test-fit the tracks, since the Dragon VP at Dragon Expo asked me whether the tracks fit or not. I also decided to build up the turret and main gun while I was at the bench.

Here is what this looks like so far. This is the turret test-fit onto the upper hull:

Here are the tracks test-fit onto the roadwheels. They will come off after I show this to the Dragon VP. Then I can paint everything:

This is the whole thing all test fit together to show you what it looks like:

Disregard the big gap in the glacis plate. Part B-3 goes there to fill it. I hope you like this so far.I'll have more progress done on the M-8 and Sherman on Sunday.  Comments are welcome.

Hi,
I got up at 5 this morning to watch the Aussies beat Croatia in the FIFA World Cup. Whilst it was on, I took the opportunity...
It's quite a good fit, unlike many kits of this sort of angular armored car.
Might even finish construction tonight, if all goes well.
I thought I might undercoat with German Grey, then go for a worn DAK Sand over the top, just for something a bit out of the ordinary.
Cheers

Nice looking kit Tony, I look forward to seeing it built.

Duke, nice progress and a nice looking kit too.  So many kits so little time.

I've got most of the detailed parts on and the tracks painted but they are a bit too snug and I tore one trying to get them on Angry [:(!].  I'll have to deal with it when I get back from holidays.  Hopefully I'll be able to check in once in awhile while I'm away.

Well, here are the pics I promised. Sorry they are a bit late. Here are the photos so far on my progress on the M-8 armored car.

This is the main hull all assembled, minus the detail parts and side skirts:

Here is a shot of the suspension underneath. It is quite detailed:

I still need to finish painting the wheels.

This is the turret test-fit on top:

That's all I was able to get done so far. Once I get a bit more work completed, I'll get the pics posted here.

Thanks again to everyone who stopped in.

Awesome work there on that Jagdpanzer IV. Mine is about the same level of completion. I also got a bit more done on the M-8 armored car. I'll get those shown as soon as I can.

As for the roadwheels being different, the Germans added the steel wheels in front because the new L70 gun made the Jagdpanzer nose-heavy. The steel wheels were better able to handle the stress of the added weight better than rubber ones.. So basically it was an operational issue.

Keep up the great work!

Bruce, I'm not an expert on German Armor and I am only follwing Dragon's instructions. I can only assume that for whatever reason's the German's had steel road wheels on the front bogie assembly and rubber wheels on the rest. Maybe it was a supply issue late in the war or maybe it was a performance issue. Maybe someone else more knowledgable than myself can shed light on the issue.

As for why I was able to assemble it so quickly Dragon did something very clever in their design of the road wheels. The center steel part is a seperate insert so that you can paint the rubber and steel parts seperately and then assemble them. No messy road wheel painting. Yahoo! That and a very peaceful Father's day weekend made for quick progress.

Sounds like you have your hands full with your build.

Yes, Razor, that's good progress. I have a couple of questions for you.

Firstly, why are those first two roadwheels different from the others? I'm especially curious because the first two look like the ones on my Matchbox/Revell/Monogram StuG IV, while the others look like the ones on my Dragon StuG IV! Until I saw yours, I was just about to make resin copies of the Dragon wheels.

My second question is ... how did you get all that done so quickly???

I have cemented the hull sides and rear to the hull  floor, and I will now spray everything dunkelgelb before I progress further.

I have decided to leave hatches open, to distract attention away from the too-flat-superstructure (the height is ok, I think, but the facets taper too far away from the centre). I was considering copying the Dragon superstructure as well, as it would fit ok over the Matchbox hull, but you have to draw the line somewhere. I also thought about scratching the panels ... but I may simply flatten out the outer strips which are angled but should be horizontal, and whittle away at the adjacent facets. It's a bit dodgy, but what can you do other than major surgery? A bit of live camouflage, perhaps <G>.

Cheerio,

Bruce

The M3 Lee by Mirage is still going to get built, but the Airfix Lee with the conversion on top has been nixed.  It looks horrible for two weeks...even with the lack of size.

A small parcel arrived from Texas today. I had ordered Czech Master's Kits PzKw IV tracks (MV049), and an Extratech set of PE (EXV 72008) for the StuG, most of which is schuertzen. If I'd been on the ball, I wouldn't have ordered the PE, but I was browsing during a weak moment. I'm all set for the weekend, now!

I'd like to have a go at this. I'd appreciate it if you could put me down for the mediocre Matchbox StuG IV. I'll order some AM tracks to go with it.

Cheers,

Looking forward to it Chris. Put me down for a Jagdpanzer IV L/70 from DML. I probably won't get around to doing the jeeps given my other commitments so please take those off the list while you are at it. TTFN (loved the tigger bump!!!)

Will,

I hope you find something before we start.

All,

I've decided to add an Airfix Grant/Lee with a VAC-U-CAST CDL conversion to my group build list.  Why not right?  So I'll build a newly tooled Mirage Lee and a brutally tooled Airfix Grant with resin add-on kit to make it look modern.

Welcome to the build.  The Dragon T34 looks like a nice kit.  I have one slated (for this summer) to build as a captured german.

Hey Chris, I havn't forgotten about the badge and I took a stab at it on the weekend.  let me know what you think.  I think I need to lighten up the background more so that the tank stands out more and I also need to fix up the text.  Can we come up with a shorter title for the badge?  I'd like to make the text a little larger if possible so that its readable.

I just realized my leopard  is a leopardIIA4 not an A2 the coolest thing i can see about the kit just from rummaging through the box is the pre colored tracks as the tracks are already metallic with the rubber pads black I think the winter cammo variations look more interesting so I may go with one of those TTFN

Well my Leopard showed up today and I could not stop myself from popping the lid on the box ( like I even tried! LOL Mischief [:-,] ) it looks like it is going to be a beauty. only 2 Months to go plenty of time to figure out what to do with paint job and such TTFN

Ammosid,

Welcome to the GB.

Wulff,

I bought the M1114 2 in 1 kit and it looks nice.  They give you 7 or 8 sets of markings with NATO or beige or both paint schemes.  There are PE panels for the kits, and the doors, roof, and windscreen are all molded in clear plastic.  They look and feel like the modern Dragon kits that I like so much.

Will,

Avoid the Dragon Abrams kits.  I give them the thumbs down.  The are not the modern Dragon kits that we've grown to love.  The kit looks cool when finished, but the Revell kit may be the better way to go.

Hi, fellow tread-heads! Cool [8D] I'd like to get in on this GB, too. I recently got a couple of 1/76 scale kits from Revell Germany, the old Matchbox kits that come with the little dioramas. If I can hold off until June from starting work on it, I'll be building the Wespe. Maybe I'll have time to build the little palm tree that comes with it! Yeah!! [yeah]

I am already overloaded with GB's but I can't resist this one. Not sure what I'll do yet, I have a couple of the Academy US jeeps that need to be put together but I'm sure I'll be picking up more stuff before the start date.

Any ideas of what you want on the badge Chris?

Count me in Mr. Wulff.

I'll build the 1/72 Mirage M3 Lee kit in Fort Benning trainer markings (colorful roundels).

It should be fun, and I may finish this short-term build.

I believe that osher is going to enjoy the Merkava III.  I've seen it finished at a show, and it would be impressive without paint.
