Ok I'm back... got plenty of shots of the P-47 although it was parked at a wierd angle and I could only get the front half in the good shots, I still got about 15 to 20 shots including brake lines and gear, inside of wheel well, inside the access panel right behind the engine (looks like electronics and pumps and stuff), several good pics of the exhaust flow over the belly (for weathering's sake) etc....  I also got some good pics of the wing folds for the SBD-5, FM-2 (F4F), F6F, Avenger and a bunch more.  I'll have em uploaded by tomorrow I am sure but will try to have the P-47 ones in tonight and a link to them.

Hey Joe Actually the R4D would have been used to run supplies to forward naval positions ( hospitals, supply bases, operational headquarters and such ) from larger instilations in Australia and New Zeland remember the 5th fleet was "McArthur's fleet" so they would share supply duties with the USAAC

Very true PanzerWulff, also the Grumman J2F did SAR missions for downed pilots. Two planes I sure would like to see. Supply and rescue.

Tornado the Theater use in this forum describes a Area in which military operations occur as in the term Theater of Operations. the south pacific theater includes Guadalcanal New Guinea anup to but not including the Phillipines I believe. Terms such as the ETO ( European Theater of Operations ) were broken down in to Smaller theaters  going with the ETO the smaller theaters were North Africa, Medeteranian, Eastern European and Western european , and the Scandinavian If I remember right. I'm not too sure on what the PTO ( Pacific Theater ) breakdown was though I hope this clarifies things Big Smile [:D]

Gulfstream I think the Black Cat Catilinas would also count on reconisance, rescue and supply as well as anti shipping now thats Versitility for ya Cool [8D]  TTFN

Oh dear... I've gone and said that word again (The "M" one!)  I guess I'll have to build another!  haha

After reviewing more of the available research on the P-38M, I realize that it does not fit into this GB.  So I am going to change my plane to one of the 'Black Cat' Catilinas, 1/72nd scale as I am currently pressed for display room.  I'll save the P-38M for another GB in the future.

As far as the Phillipines not being part of the South Pacific, some MacArthur fans may argue.  I found a website that gives a nice map of the South Pacific that can help some who have forgotten their geography lessons from school (or who at least needs a refresher(myself included)Blush [:I]).

http://www.mapsouthpacific.com/   or

http://www.reliefweb.int/mapc/asi_oce/reg/swpacif.html  My 2 cents [2c]

also, a website that gives a quick run down of WWII the the South and Southwest Pacific  http://www.grolier.com/wwii/wwii_9.html  My 2 cents [2c]

These should help those of us who are a bit hazy on some details (including me).

Ryan,

Just curious, not complaining, what sort of system are you using, your shorthand is very interesting.  Carlisle, would that be Carlisle Pennsylvania?

Scott-I know that feeling!....btw-what brand decals, stock number, etc are they?  I have a P-38 that I might build for this GB.

Thanks

ps-Tom, it makes me nervous when you can't come up with 'Fringe' at the drop of a hat.  However, I know that you will find a build that will astonish us all!

Bob - well for this one I will stick to the Mexican Air Force P-47 I think... that is a "bit fringe-ish" I'm having trouble for the BoB though... I'll have to look around!

There are many good decal sets out there for the P-38, my dilema was finding markings for my P-38F.  There were several for the European and Mediterranean/North African theaters, but this was the only set I could find for a P-38F unit in the South Pacific.

Joe, I'm posting this from home on my old Mac, so I hope it gets thru okay. I am a newbie at posting here (lurking for some time), newbie using Photobucket, and also a newbie at model airplanes having done a Sopwith Camel recently. Previous airplane was 45 years ago when all was required was silver and black paint for the landing gear, the decals went over the grey plastic.

I had been researching decals for a suitable P-40 and found some great Aussie schemes, then found the Academy P-40E and M,N kits with decals for three planes each....and suitable for your GB. I decided to see what was available at the IPMS Seattle Spring show before ordering them and ended up finding a gem, I think anyway.

A guy was selling an Academy F6F-3,5 with aftermarket wheels, vacuum formed canopy with the Verlinden photoetch set and resin engine and cockpit for $10. He said it would be suitable for a South Pacific GB so I got it.

The kit is an earlier version containing only one decal set for the '35' plane and did not tell if that was a -3 or -5 so I went to www.plastic-models.com and learned that the '35' was a -5 and served on the USS Hornet....then I was off to www.uss-hornet.org and learned that it was sunk in 1943 at the Battle of Santa Cruz......then found out that the -5 was introduced in April 1944....oops!!..then learned of the new USS Hornet was commissioned in 1943 and that it was all over the Pacific...........so.....I think I have a plane for your GB.

So many new challenges, posting here, photobucket, photoetch, resin...... I am soooo excited.

Will this plane fit in with your GB guidelines? If so...I am set and need to clean off some projects on my workbench......and.........Hello to everyone....this GB concept sounds like a lot of fun.

Hey Jerry,

Wow...first off the -3 model of the Hellcat is perfectly acceptable.  This model is most readily identified by the small windows immeadiately aft of the canopy.  Hellcats did attack Rabaul in '43 when the US carrier forces re-emerged in force.  I do not recall offhand as to what carrier task force participated, but I will look it up if that is helpful.

Next, that was a great deal, borderline steal on the kit with aftermarket goodies!

The P40 is an excellent choice for the South Pacific.  It was used extensively by all of the Allied Air Forces, most notably the Aussies and New Zealanders.  Are you looking to do two submissions?  Not a problem if you are.  The time frame for this is one year so feel free to submit as many as you care to.
