The Airfix Farewell GB from now until 1st Jan 2007
Posted by osher on Thursday, August 31, 2006 5:56 PM

Today, 31st August, Airfix closed it's door, maybe for the last time, maybe not.  In honour of this early pioneer of modelling, I am setting up this GB.  Any kit marketed under the Airfix name (including Arii, Trumpeter, etc kit that Airfix sold under their name), from trains, figures, space, aircraft, birds, sci-fi, buildings, cars, tanks, to just about anything else that takes your imagination.

Badge to follow (anyone able to help here?)

Rules:
1. Must be sold as an Airfix kit
2. Standard OOB rules apply
3. Can be combined with any other GB
4. Kit can be already started
5. Any kit, any scale
6. Make it a celebration of the wonderful Airfix company!
7. If possible, a scan of the box art

Here's the GB badge

Hi Rudy,

Could you make the badge a wee bit smaller, and with the text Airfix Farewell GB, no need for numbers.

As for me, I'm in with a MiG-15, 1/72, kit no. 00017.  Why this kit?  Well, at first I thought of my part builds, a Lancaster, and a Mig-21.  Both of them (from 1979 and 1981 respectively) are from the end of the Golden Age.  However, I wanted something new.  A Short Sunderland?  A favourite of mine, but I want to throw tons of AM at it, and it's going to be rare soon.  So, something else....hmmm....,the skeleton?  Maybe, but not this time.  The re-issue Mk.1 Spit?  Maybe, as a second build.  The Williams F1?  Oh no no no, this represents a real low in Airfix, with a overly basic kit, and possibly the worst decals (in terms of colour and fit) to ever 'grace' an Airfix kit.  Even Airfix admitted to me that they couldn't get the decals to fit!  The kits were bought in from Heller by Airfix, as an attempt to appeal to a younger audience.

So, there it was, the Mig-15.  It's an early Airfix kit, and represents both the high and low of Airfix.  For it's time it would have been a wonderful, interesting kit of a contempory enemy aircraft.  However, sadly, it's still (until yesterday, anyway) being sold, now being marketed as a kit for kids, with brush and some naff paints.  The moulds on this are worn, even on my 8 year old example, so that the numbers are sometimes just blurs.  The fit is awful, the details either non-existant, or clumsy, and interior is just a seat and pilot, not even a control column!  Just 31 parts, so, aside from getting it to fit, should be a quick build.  From a wonderful kit of it's time, to a worn out kit, needing retirement.

I think I'm going all sentimental and ga-ga!

I'll join- tip of the hat to Airfix.

Can't decide between  a Hurricane Mk. I, which seems to be more of the traditional Airfix kit, or one of the newer ones, like the Spitfire 22.

Either way- count me in! I'm ordering one or the other today.

Or both? Hmmmm.......

Hi Osher, good idea for a GB!

I have two Airfix kits currently in the stash, a 1:72 Bf-110c/d  which I would like to build for the BoB06 GB but I also have a 1:72 Tornado Gr4. Shock [:O]

WWHHAATT you say, a jetConfused [%-)]Big Smile [:D]

I normally don't do jets but it was given to me by my nephew and I havne't done a jet in so long I thought, what the hey, I'll build it anyway!  If time permits, I would like to build the Tornado.   I have been very short on time lately but I can at least give it a go.

I'd like to get in on this and since you are allowing combined builds I'll start with a 1/72 Meteor mkIII (I can build jets too Jay Big Smile [:D]Wink [;)]) that I am planning on doing for the first jets GB.  If time permits I may add a second build.

Well, since I'm trying to get an E-Boat GB off the ground (changed the name to Kriegsmariene GB), that means I'm going to be building the Airfix 1/71 E-Boat anyway, so, I guess, you can count me in on this one if it's ok to put in a dio...

Hey Osher,

I am in with the 1/72 Vampire and possibly a figure also. I have a lot of the old 54mm figures and would like to build the French Cuirassier or the Polish Lancer. What to do what to do??????. By the way has anyone seen or know where you can get the 54mm individual figures that have not been around in ages. I cant find them anywhere?. On the rules of the GB, for the Vampire I would like to use AM Decals I have for the Irish Air Corp. The Vampire was for my collection of Air Corps aircraft so is that allowed for the build.

Steve.

Hi, all!

Reading this topic, I think, that the badge is important, it must bring some hope ; due to its small size, it must be simple, so just an Airfix logo, with "Good Bye" as text.

Of course, I expect Airfix to come back, radically changed...

Basically (and someone correct me if i'm wrong), it means, the only thing you can add to what's in the box are seatbelts. (OOB standing for Out Of Box).Question [?]

As for decals, hmmm, well, the kit's the thing, and whilst I'd prefer Airfix decals too, sure, use AM decals!Cool [8D]

All done!  Been looking around for the colours for the interior (as much as it is).  Going to use light grey and black.  Found a picture of a Mig-15 kit from the 50's in a the earliest packaging.  Is this the only mould to be use from (almost) day one to the final days?

Hiya!  Hmmm, let's use just the logo in the top left corner (the roundel, with the white background), and maybe the words: Airfix Farewell GB, if possible in a circle around the logo?

Well...yes, I get your point, but the idea is to be a bold badge, that stands out.
