I was very sad to learn of the demise of Airfix. My first models were Airfix kits over 30 years ago. I have only recently returned to modelling after a very long hiatus. I have started my second project which is an Airfix 1/72 CA-13 Boomerang. I also have an Airfix 1/48 D.H. Mosquito FB VI, but not sure whether this one will be completed in time for the GB. Please count me in with the Boomerang. Incidently, I will be seeing a Boomerang in the air tomorrow at Temora Aviation Museum (www.aviationmuseum.com.au).

Hey Joe, Thought I was doing the Vampire???. Does this mean I have to do the F-86?. Just kidding, progress looks nice and will turn out well I can tell so far. How is the build going so far??. Any problem areas to watch out for.

traveller, jeff, and mike, welcome all aboard!

Wow, that Vampire looks amazing Joe!  How's the FW coming on Karl, it's looking good so far

The first page has been update.

As for my MiG - I've sanded back the 4th silver coat, and one final (I promise) coat.  Whatever happens, it stays! (famous last words)

Your kits look great guys...
As for me I've just started the E-Boat yesterday, not much to show for yet ; removed the molded-n ropes on the front deck, assemled the hull construction (I'll do this model waterline) and started removing the torpedo attachementplates (torpedoes will be moved forward).
I'm probably going to upload a picture this weekend.

Ok, the decision is made. Here's the kit:

It actually came with a rigging diagram, and theres plenty of rigging. But that's why we build biplanes, right? I'll do it with swedish markings - that's something different for a change, and there's also a swedish air force group build going on ...

But I'll have to hurry - leaving for a vacation soon, and then a major move across the ocean is approaching fast.

The fit around the intakes is not the best, bot other than that nothing out of the unusual for an Airfix kit.

Progress Update

Dora is now in the paintshop.

I've primed the entire airframe with RLM76, which has shown up a few minor surface blemishes which I'll deal with tomorrow.

Dan,

There's quite a bit of info on the early Schnellboots at the Airfix Tribute Forum. There's a Group Build going on there soon (starting early October, I think).

This is a kit that dates, I think, from the early '70s.

It has a generally good level of detail, though soft by today's standards, and it doesn't detail what each individual item of kit is, which would be helpful to those of a younger vintage than myself.

Here is the box, which dates, I think, from the early '90s:

and the rear of the box:

You glue the left leg to the right leg, and paint the pants light grey:

You glue the chest to the back, and paint the shirt red (this will be a duller red by the time I'm finished):

Sideburns were in fashion, I'm sure:

And a black felt hat (Shako) was the ultimate in style, if not protection:

The musket was as brown as it's nickname (Brown Bess):

Edit: You can see on the photos where the paint has been chipped off/ rubbed off. I pre-painted most of the parts with oils prior to assemby. I will finish off with a few different sorts of paints, and hope that the end result will have a decent "depth" of colour.

Well, here are my first pictures of the Airfix "German E-Boat" ("E" referred to "Enemy"), this kit also dates from the seventies, most parts are thick for the scale, but all with all a very enjoyable kit.

Bruce, looks like you're making good progress there.

Dan, I once heard that the E designation came from Eilboot, or boat in a hutty!

Doesn't look bad for such an old kit.

Thanks, well, the correct designation was S-Boot, being schnellboot, it were the English whom referred to them as E-Boats.  It sure isn't a bad kit for its age, I agree that some (if not most) parts are overly thick and if I ever get my hands on this kit again I'll sure ago a few extra miles to scratchbuild or thin most of the chunky parts.
One other annoying thing about this kit is that you really have to search for the parts, for instance, part 45 can be on one sprue while part 46 that's supposed to connect with 45 can be on another sprue, while the sprues themselves have no number or letter.
Another incorrect thing is the placement of the torpedoes that are waaaay to much aft, making it impossible to load them into the tubes, as you can see on the second pic, I've removed and filled the aft support plates, and made new ones at the fron (the white rectangles), I've decided to let the "front" plates in place and use them as aft, which according to my refferences is more or less correct.

The depth charges, IIRC, are too small in diameter, and were probably not carried.

Please tell me that you have looked at the Airfix Tribute Forum stuff, because if you haven't, then I could send you some pictures etc.:)

Good luck with the P-40!  The latest is the Revell Germany are looking into the possibilities of buying Airfix.  It seems that Revell Germany has split from Revell America (will that now be just Monogram again?) and, as such, is keener to aquire new business.

The E-boat's coming on well!  Never tried that kit, but always thought about it.  Is it a decent kit Dan?

I see the figure's coming on well too Bruce.  That's, what, 3" high?

I just ghosted on a light first (5th) coat to the MiG last night.  Going to apply a thicker coat tonight, and see how it looks.  Just hope Humbrol paints come back before I run out of Hmbrol no.11!

Osher, the E-Boat is, considering it's age and roots a more than decent kit, I would not recomend it to beginners though.  But if you're looking for an unusual subject (regardless of the inaccuracies) than you should certainly give it a try. Be prepared for some serious cleaning up though Smile [:)]

54mm is a tad over 2". Including the Shako and Plume, it would be about 2.5" high.

The kit comes with a small rectangular sheet of 0.005" plastic card for making straps. I've made one for the canteen, and slung it over his right shoulder, to hang at his left hip. This needs to be done before his arms are attached.

Progress Update

The Dora is masked up ready for an application of RLM 75 to the upper surfaces.

Realised yesterday that I'd completely forgotten to respray the areas of the wing leading edges that I'd re-sanded after the initial coat of RLM 76!Dunce [D)]

Nothing that 2 minutes with the AB didn't sort out.

75 should go on tonight.

Karl

I painted a bit more colour on the chappie tonight, and painted the base, as well.

so i am going to build 3 chipmunks  at once all in different markings

i have a total of 5 of them

but i am going to sit on the other 2 for now (no pun intended)

OK everyone, the 1/72 E-3D Sentry (AWACS) is on its way, so thats what I'll be going with for the GB.  Assuming all goes well with the postal system, I should be able to start late next week so consider this your one week notice to buy stock in Tamiya putty!

Durr, you're my hero!  Three at once.  Can't wait to see how they turn out.
