Hi Guys,

first time in ages i have been here and seeing as i run the unnofocial airfix modelers forum i thought it rude if i didn't participate in this one. with Telford coming up i am a bit busy bit i propose to do a fairly quick build of either a series one or two kit. before i decide though can someone tell me the finish date for the g/b please, i have a fe projects with rather rare kits that i want to do and may include one of them if there's enough time.

all the best.

Greg

Nice one on the prompt answer, cheers. i will be digging out an Airfix Hunter FGA9 for building oob, the oldies i refered to are Jet Provost T3 models which i have three, i need another to do the Macaws aerobatic teams aircraft, this is the display team from the RAF Manby College of Air Warfare and as i want to do all the work to make this model acurate including reworking the wings and building the interior from scratch i won't get them done in time. well, on with the hunter.

all the best.

*****BREAKING NEWS******

It was announced in the news today that Hornby are buying Humbrol/Airfix for £2.8million, they will be moving the offices to Kent (where they are located), and are investigating for production partners.

I'm sure it was all down to this GB!  So, time to rename this GB!

Could everyone please have a quick glance at the first post, to see if I have the correct information for them, regarding build status?

Thanks!  Osher

I've not had a lot of time to build lately.... I think my squadron will be reduced to a single Spitfire Mk. IX. Darn work always interferres with modeling!

Hey Osher, thanks for that great piece of news on Airfix, I presume the Airfix name will continue. i guess we will have to vote on a new GB name. Looking forward to a new Airfix GB. Hope they re-issue some of the old stuff.

Great news indeed Osher.  Thanks for the info and I'll be looking forward to the welcome back GB.  I also hope they re-issue some of the older stuff but look forward to some new kits as well.

Excellent- I've got 8..... yes 8, un-built Airfix Spitfires that would fit the bill.

Hornby are moving production to China, where their trains and engines are already made.

This will mean proper moulds (not guff old Heller ones!) and better quality  products. They are also planning a new range of products to encourage younger generation modellers to get involved again.

This will be interesting!

Avro finished
Posted by sirdrake on Saturday, November 11, 2006 6:36 PM

Tadaa! It's done. Finished with the Avro. The model is kind of hard to handle now, wiring everywhere (a total of 70 rigging / control wires, my personal record!)

Swedish Air Force, "Marinens Flygvaesede", 1924. Decals gave me a hard time, some of them (as you can see...) desintgrated under my hands. Or mybe that's just me?

Hope you like it.

Boomerang Complete
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, November 11, 2006 8:29 PM

It is indeed great news that Airfix will live on Smile [:)]

The Boomerang is now complete. It was a somewhat troublesome little kit. Lots of filler went into this model. The decals also have a regsitration problem, hence the extra white area around the edges of the roundels. The model is from 5 squadron RAAF based at Bougainville New Guinea, 1944. Paints used were Humbrol.

Wow Frank!  That looks awesome. Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]  I've never rigged a biplane myself but it sure looks like that was a lot of work.

Mike, the Boomerang looks great too!  Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup] I don't think I have ever seen a built model of one before.  Thanks for sharing it with us.

Frank, great job on the Avro, especially considering that it is braille scale.

Mike, nice looking Boomerang.

Well I finally got around to taking some proper pics of the Dora....

VERY NICE WORK CHAPS!!!!Bow [bow]

Particularly the 504. Amazed how quick you managed to rig 70 wires at 3 per day...!

Excellent building all round.

AWESOME!  That Avro 504, fully rigged and nicely assembled and painted is awesome!  It's a harking back to the days of the old modellers, when we had kits that needed a lot of input, but with so much effort gave fantatic results, unlike many of today's kits that just fall together.  You must be so proud of the Avro.

The Boomerang look cool!  Nice job, really nice paint work, just a pity about the decals...  Still, it's a fine model, and a worthy addition to the GB.

That Dora looks just so good, hard to believe it's an old (60's) Airfix kit!  Just goes to show what can be achieved.  A lot of that must be down to that brilliant paint job.

I've updated the front page.

I'm still working on the canopy of my MiG, but I'm barely doing any work on it at the moment, just so tedious...  Still, I want it done before the Nationals next week, along with my Novo Gloster Whittle (first jets GB)

Karl, Mike, excellent work. Wow!! [wow]. Outstanding paintwork.

All, thanks.for the praise. Alas, I already have to look for a new home for the 504K. I'll be moving overseas in two weeks, and no matter how I wrap it up, I guess it would have a hard time surviving the shipping. But hey, it's a cheap kit, I might just build it again...

Karl, Mike and SD.  Some great looking builds going on in this GB. It's great to see the old Boomerang kit and well done on it. Beautiful paint job on that Dora and 504K with the rigging is breathtaking. My 504K is half built and I think I will have to pause and think of how to finish it now with rigging. This GB really showes what a little extra work can do for the Airfix line. I dont think they are as bad as people tend to think. Glad they will continue to produce their line of great kits.

Great looking builds all! I've got some catching up to do.

I began putting on the decals for my Spitfire last night. Here's a few pics:

Hey JWB, nice progress on the Spit, very good looking build and you should be done soon by the looks of things. Got two Spits in progress myself and hope they come out that well. Have a quick question for ya on it by the way,  is it me or does the port side roundel have a black outer circle on it where the other does not??.

Yeah- it's actually dark blue. It's not quite as stark in person, but it's really weird. It lloked a bit darker on the decal sheet, but once it got on- it just sorta popped out. I'm not sure why that one was printed that way. I'm gonna find a replacement for those.... probably just use one of the other kit ones- the blue and red version. The other decals were pretty good- 'ceptin that one.

I actually wondered for a minute if it was meant to be there. But checking the color references for decal placement that Airfix supplied, it did not show that.

Hey Jon, that Spit's looking great!  Such good hard-edged masking too, how did you do it?

It started out OOB, and is essentially OOB except that the antennae were damaged in a plane trip, so I made some bogus new ones.

Anyway, here's the build-up.

and, painted, decalled and on a Matchbox Comet base:

Thanks so much!

I just used plain blue masking tape. I use the back edge of a nut pick as a burnishing tool, and it works great. If you get the tape down tight, it works very well.

When I'm done, I use a coffee filter to sand down any build up along the edges.
